CLEVELAND, Ohio — A 12-year-old boy was shot to death Monday in the Ohio City neighborhood, police said.

The shooting happened about 6:40 p.m., likely on Loop Drive, police said. The boy, who has not yet been identified, was shot in the head while he was inside a van, according to police.

The van stopped in the parking lot of Kan Zaman, a restaurant on West 25th Street, according to police. Officers detained one person for questioning but have not made any arrests.

The shooting happened about 40 minutes after a man was shot to death on West 65th Street near Lawn Avenue in the city’s Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood. Police said details of that incident, including the age of the man killed, was not immediately available.

The shootings mark the 179th and 180th homicides of 2020 in Cleveland. Eleven children under age 18 have been killed in Cleveland so far in 2020, one more than last year, including 15-year-old Anthony Hughes Jr., who was fatally shot on Wednesday while walking home from a community meeting.

The 12-year-old boy was also the eighth person under age 17 to be shot, including victims who survived, since Nov. 17, including two 2-year-olds and a 3-year-old.
