EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Two East Cleveland police officers were suspended following an investigation based on complaints from citizens in 2013, officials said.

Officer Eric Jones resigned on Friday, said East Cleveland Mayor Gary Norton. Sgt. Torris Moore is suspended without pay.

The mayor declined to provide specifics about the officers' alleged misconduct. The city and an outside agency are conducting the ongoing investigation. Norton would not identify the agency.

Jones, 37 has been with the department for six years. Moore, 43 is a 22 year veteran of the force. Both were assigned to the department's street unit, which deals with various crimes including narcotics and prostitution, Norton said.

The investigations were launched based on a combination of rumors and verbal complaints from citizens, Norton said.

"The community's responsibility through its mayor is to police the police," Norton said. "And we take very seriously complaints of alleged misconduct among our officers and we investigate them. And sometimes, as in this case, those investigations have consequences."
