COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Before this season, only two true freshmen have earned the honor of losing their black stripe on their helmet during Ohio State’s spring practice.
The Buckeyes have matched that number in 2019 as defensive end Zach Harrison has become the next player to do, so joining receiver Garrett Wilson.

Landing Harrison was the first major victory for OSU coach Ryan Day, as it had only been 15 days since he was announced as Urban Meyer’s replacement. Now Harrison joins Wilson, receiver Austin Mack and defensive lineman Tommy Togiai to achieve the honor, which is symbolic of a player moving from being a recruit to a contributor on the team.
The five-star recruit grew up 15 minutes from Ohio State’s campus and was the highest rated player in Ohio State’s 2018 recruiting class.
In total 10 players have lost their stripes this spring. The others are Ryan Batch, Justin Fields, Logan Hittle, Cade Kacherski, Austin Kutscher, Ben Schmiesing, Darryl Sinclair and Max Wray.
