COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Cameron Martinez of Muskegon (Mich.) High School has decided to put off signing his National Letter of Intent until February, according to Rivals’ Josh Helmholdt.

His decision is a result of Ohio State football co-defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley taking the job as Boston College’s next head coach. Though only on the Buckeyes’ coaching staff for one year, Hafley made a name for himself on the recruiting trail. That included being Martinez’s main contact during his recruitment and oral commitment to the Buckeyes.

The three-star recruit is rated as the No. 322 overall player and the No. 14 athlete in the 2020 class. He served as Muskegon’s quarterback and was the named MLive.com’s Michigan High School Football Player of the Year. He was expected to play defensive back or wide receiver for Ohio State.

He is the first of players recruited by Hafley to make the decision to put off his signing, while many of the other future defensive backs have said that they still plan to sign with the Buckeyes this week. The only player who has not said that he will be heading to Columbus in January is Clark Phillips III of La Habra (Calif.) High School. He plans to sign his National Letter of Intent Thursday.
