'The Nutcracker' gets jazzy at Lakewood's Beck Center this weekend

Tchaikovsky, meet Kanye.

The Beck Center for the Arts will merge two worlds when the classic ballet “The Nutcracker” gets a 21st-century makeover fused with hip hop and contemporary dance.

“Nutcracker... Jazzed Up!” will open this weekend, giving families a unique break from the often hectic schedules of the holiday season.

Featuring choreography by Melanie Szucs, associate director of dance education and fellow faculty members Louise Hadaway, Wannetta Scott and Mimi Schwensen, this production bring together dancers from around the area to showcase all manner of styles.

Showtimes are 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Dec. 3 and 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Dec. 4.

Tickets cost $12 for adults and $10 for children and students.

The Beck Center for the Arts is located at 17801 Detroit Ave. in Lakewood.
