Cleveland Heights-University Heights library needs to invest in University Heights branch: Letter to the Editor

The announcement by the Cleveland Heights-University Heights Public Library to spend $485,000 to revamp part of the Cleveland Heights Main Library is characteristic of their long-standing view that the taxpayers in University Heights be treated as second-class citizens.

Those of us in University Heights who pay full taxes in support of our public library get a very small branch library with very limited open hours. It’s time that the library administration spend some of our money in University Heights to expand our building and hours.

Further, if the library has money to revamp its main building, it is also time to expand library hours at the main building to include a full day’s access on Sundays. Currently, the library opens at 1 p.m. Sundays, probably the last remaining public institution in the county to observe the Sunday “Blue Laws.” In a multi-cultural community such as ours, it is time to treat every day of the week the same. Not everyone celebrates the Sabbath on Sunday.

Progressive library systems across the country have leveled the playing field and provide equal access to the libraries to all.
