Some follow the botanical theme (palm-tree art prints by Vanilla Fly; beauty products for gardeners such as lemon-nettle hand balm and dog-rose scrub by Yard Etc), while others (coral velvet cushions by HKliving; brass trays; amber glass vases; wooden stools) are pure interiors inspiration. Afterwards, pop next door to Da Matteo for nutty batch-brew coffee and a just-baked kanelbulle, or cinnamon roll.

This is a dream stop for anyone who can’t resist beautiful paper products. Hidden away in Victoria Passage, Rum för Papper sells everything from sheets of Rifle Paper Co’s floral wrap to tan pencil cases by Swedish leather-goods company PAP and notebooks from Notem Studio. In the back room, there are birthday cards, washi masking tapes and hand-made items so pretty they could be framed and hung on the wall.

Artilleriet, a warehouse-style space at the back of the Magasinsgatan courtyard, has been a key part of the city’s interiors scene since it was set up by childhood friends Sofie Hellsing and Christian Duivenvoorden in 2011. Famous designs – the Delfino armchair by Erberto Carboni, first created in 1954; Hans J Wegner’s PP75 dining table; the Flos Snoopy lamp – sit alongside cherry-picked items including a hand-made cane cabinet, vibrant embroidered cushions and minimalist brass candlesticks created by the owners themselves. Meanwhile, neighbouring sister shop The Kitchen sells the most covetable tableware: ceramic Bordallo Pinheiro cabbage-leaf sets; sleek brass-and-teak salad servers.

A platform for established and up-and-coming creatives, Designtorget mostly sells homeware (rugs by Formgatan using PET yarn, which is made from recycled plastic bottles; a portable Carrie light from Danish brand Menu). But there are also offbeat keepsakes – the monochrome ‘In Sweden we call it a fika’ tray by illustrator Karin Ohlsson is a standout – and books on lagom, the Swedish art of balanced living.

Sweden's most celebrated high fashion label
It’s hard to miss the pastel-pink façade of Acne Studios, one of Sweden’s most successful fashion brands. Fresh from a facelift, the open-plan shop has a new futuristic-meets-industrial look with a curving steel changing room in the centre, brown-brick floor and metal light fittings and rails, inspired by its brutalist headquarters in Stockholm. Only one of each item from the collection is on show; the display for this season includes peppermint cords, a tangerine pleated skirt, a lilac cropped sweater and a stone-grey wool coat with large beige pockets.

Where to shop local brands
Six-year-old homegrown menswear brand A Day’s March specialises in cool everyday staples, from lamb’s wool sweaters and chinos to suede trainers. It’s become popular with female customers who scoop up the herringbone and pinstripe shirt-jackets and cashmere crewnecks to wear as oversized boyfriend-style pieces. There’s a more feminine, rocky vibe at womenswear spot Twist & Tango, where smart, silky flower-patterned trousers and snakeskin-print wrap dresses hang beside cosy mohair jumpers and plaid jackets.

Family-owned jeans label Dr Denim opened a boutique just down the street from its workshop in 2014. The space is hip and fresh, with monochrome-tiled flooring, geometric wall art and streetwear, including camouflage sweatshirts and slogan tops, displayed in box-crate shelves. There are Nineties denim bootcuts and more experimental pieces such as burnt-orange, wide-leg frayed trousers and stone-wash boiler-suits. Just around the corner, Nudie Jeans offers free repairs of its products, as well as a discount on new jeans in exchange for worn pairs.

Tinna is the only address in the city to stock the legendary Swedish label Svenskt Tenn, which made its name with bold, colourful, nature-inspired textiles by20th-century architect and designer Josef Frank. There are stacks of floral lampshades on one side of the room; floor-to-ceiling shelves of cushions on the other, as well as tulip-covered round trays, birds on coasters and rolls of elephant-stamped fabrics. Dotted among all this joyful print you will also find forest-green bobble-glass vases, silver candle holders and other sleek home accessories.

Expect a simple, muted palette and lots of natural textures: jute baskets, linen cushion covers, hemp carpets and gorgeous glazed stoneware plates, bowls and mugs.

Hotel Flora is brilliantly located, with a canal at the front and one of the main shopping streets at the back. Rooms are wrapped around a courtyard and decorated by Danish studio Design By Us; some have fun colour schemes and quirky interiors – brightly painted walls in pink and red, Art Deco-style mirrors – while others are more understated, with elegant sea-green velvet armchairs and pebble-grey headboards. There’s an outdoor terrace on the second floor, a co-working space where locals drop by for meetings, and a small bar and restaurant which serves help-yourself breakfasts that can also be bagged up and eaten on the go.
