How did it strike you on arrival?
This 1950s motor lodge has been a magnet for the cool crowd ever since it served as a hangout for classic rock bands playing at The Fillmore. Now Phoenix Hotel boasts a reincarnated glory, as an uber-hip, casual, mid-century lodge in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighbourhood.
What’s the crowd like?
Even after many decades, the Phoenix Hotel still attracts the creative set. Musicians, artists, designers, and influencers all convene here, always in their coolest threads.
What was the check-in process like? Thanks to the hotel's small size, checking in and navigating the grounds is easy. Everything – from the rooms to the restaurant to the lounge – centres around the interior courtyard and pool. Another perk: Every room comes with a parking spot – which is worth gold in San Francisco.

Rooms are small and simple, but what they lack in space, they make up for in style, with textured pillows, live-edge coffee tables, and dramatic pops of colour. Some suites have private balconies and separate living rooms, but no matter what kind of room they’re staying in, all guests have access to the heated outdoor pool – a San Francisco rarity.
