The Louisville Historical Museum has been awarded for its Marshall Fire Story Project, which captured the stories of fire survivors in the immediate aftermath of the fire.

The American Association for State and Local History gave the Award of Excellence to the historical museum, 1001 Main St., the museum announced Monday.

Museum staff started the Marshall Fire Story Project in response to the fire on Dec. 30, 2021, recognizing the urgency and importance of documenting the fire and the immediate aftermath through stories, photos and personal stories. The museum has also collected items representing the fire and hosted conservation workshops to help with items salvaged from the fire.

According to a news release, the museum hopes the project provides a safe place for reflection and empathy, as well as a place to learn more about climate change, collective trauma and community resilience.
