Emergency crews quickly extinguished a grass fire near the Erie Municipal Airport on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Mountain View Fire Rescue spokesman Rick Tillery, no structures were damaged during the incident near the airport, at 395 Airport Drive.

“Landscapers were mowing the grass near Erie Airport and apparently one of the mowers hit a rock which caused a small spark,” said Tillery. “The spark grew into a small grass fire which at first was about 10 feet by 10 feet. After a small gust of wind (the fire) grew to a third of an acre”

At 1:36 p.m., Mountain View Fire Rescue crews were dispatched and were able to arrive on scene shortly after:

“Crews were on scene pretty quick because Station no. 8 is right down the road and were able to get the grass fire out before it grew any bigger than that,” Tillery said.

Tillery stated that firefighters are currently “mopping up” the fire and making sure there’s no flames or hot spots.
