A motorcyclist who died due to crash Monday night at U.S. 287 and Isabelle Road was reportedly fleeing the scene of a suspected shoplifting but was not being actively pursued by police.
The Boulder County Coroner’s Office has identified the motorcyclist as 40-year-old Henry Anfinson.
According to Lafayette police spokesman Brian Rosipajla, at 6:33 p.m. Lafayette police were called to Walmart, at 745 U.S. 287 in Lafayette, on a call of a shoplift. Officers contacted the Anfinson at the store but police said he resisted arrest and fled on a motorcycle.
Lafayette police did not pursue Anfinson due to the nature of the call and danger a pursuit can pose to the public, according to Rosipajla. Police remained in the parking lot to complete their investigation.
A Boulder County sheriff’s deputy who saw Anfinson driving shortly before the crash was the first on the scene, according to Rosipajla.
According to Colorado State Patrol Trooper Gabriel Moltrer, at 7:05 p.m. troopers were dispatched to the crash near U.S. 287 and Isabelle Road.
According to Mountain View Fire Rescue, Anfinson disregarded a traffic signal and hit the rear door on the driver’s side of a Mazda SUV, according to the post.
A fire then fully engulfed the SUV. According to the post, the driver was able to escape out of the car through the passenger door.
