The Look Book Goes to a Boxing Gym

We spoke to early-morning boxers at H.I.I.T. the Deck, a Fidi gym with an unusually dedicated clientele.

Management consultant, Fidi

How many days a week do you come?
Five or six. I work in mergers and acquisitions for a big-four firm. A lot of people at the gym are investment bankers and consultants.

Why so early?
We need to work out like that because of the intensity of our jobs. We’re a little bit crazy and a little bit more driven than maybe the average person. In addition to our jobs, we’re constantly looking for that intensity.

Daniella Malave

Coach, Sheepshead Bay

Natalie Ramirez

IT associate, Fidi

Sabrina Poon

Nurse, Fidi

How long have you been a nurse?

For over ten years — so during the pandemic. There are a few nurses in our boxing classes, actually, and honestly, we deal with a lot of stuff from the hospital here; it’s a way for us to get our stress and aggression out.

Nina Sabbagh

Deputy director of communications, Seaport

Ashlee Bormes

Associate VP of medical communications, Fidi

What do you like about the gym?

I feel like punching is therapeutic. But also the people. There’s a crew of us that calls ourselves “the 6 a.m. club.” I used to go to the 7 a.m. class and was like, Oh my God, the 6 a.m. people are crazy. Superintense. But once you start going, you can’t stop.

Clara Geslin

Data scientist, Midtown East

Kelly Parham

Closet designer, Seaport

Elise Bathurst

Director of people operations, Fidi

Ronson Frank

Gym co-owner, East Flatbush

Samantha Weintraub

Advertising director, Meatpacking District

Kayla Trivieri

Product manager, Fidi

Dev Shah

Investment adviser, Fidi

It seems like the 6 a.m. class is mostly women.

Yeah, the guys never stick. The women are consistent. But I am too, because I think boxing helps me with the market. When you’re so fixated on prices, things going up and down, boxing helps keep you even-keeled.

Paulina Vo

Pediatric nurse, Seaport

Allison Jones

Manager, Bay Shore

Raheam Lawrence

Personal trainer, Harlem

Sophie Nathan

Account executive, Noho

Asya Sukiasyan

Real-estate agent, Sheepshead Bay

Long commute?

Yes, and I’m always late. And if I’m late, I have to run stairs or do 50 burpees. When I first started, I couldn’t even do one burpee. I got so embarrassed trying that I ran away.
