Not your mother's Birkenstock

The original Birkenstock was created in the 1930s by Konrad Birkenstock.

The German shoemaker set out to create an insole that was flexible and anatomically shaped, but also supportive.

The original shoe featured four different layers, including a shock-absorbent sole, followed by a layer of jute fibers, a firm cork footbed, and another layer of jute.

Fast forward almost 100 years and the functional shoe has been reimagined to be trendy and fab!

The footbed still conforms to the shape of the wearer's foot, but the latest offerings to emerge on the runways are lot snazzier than the original design.

Teva-style with a twist

Teva sandals were invented in 1984 by geophysicist Mark Thatcher.

Mark worked on the Grand Canyon and needed shoes that wouldn't float down the river during water activities.

Out of necessity he attached two Velco watchbands to his flip-flops and voila! The first Teva was born!

Fast forward 40 years, the style of shoe is so much more than functional footwear.
