I just got engaged and I hate the ring my fiance picked - is it just me or do I bite the bullet and tell him the truth?

A woman was left torn after her boyfriend proposed with a ring that was the opposite of what she'd hoped for.

While the proposal was 'perfect' and she was thrilled about the prospect of life together, she was immediately disappointed when she saw the sparkler he'd chosen.

'I feel horrible about it and I've been crying with a ball of anxiety in stomach because I feel like an awful person for this,' she confessed in a Reddit post.

When her partner asked if she liked the ring she panicked and lied.

'I know I shouldn't have, but he just looked so happy and I didn't want to hurt him,' the American woman explained.

'Do I just suck it up and learn to love the ring, or do I tell him?

'If so, how do I bring it up in the most kind, respectful way possible, I'm worried I'll hurt his feelings...he is the only person I can imagine spending my life with.'

Many supported her and said she couldn't lie about the ring forever and urged her to tell her future husband the truth.

'You should start with how excited you are to spend the rest of your life with him...and then proceed that it’s been eating you with anxiety and guilt that you don’t actually like your ring but that does not impact how happy the engagement has made you,' one suggested.

'This is the healthy thing to do. Way to go,' another agreed.

One wife said that she never spoke up about not liking her engagement ring and still hides the truth from her husband.

'I never stopped wishing he'd gotten the right ring,' she said.

Others agreed that while difficult conversions 'suck', marriage is built on honesty.

Others said that most jewellers had return windows for engagement rings, and men usually weren't that sensitive about their fiancees not liking the style they had chosen.

'Honestly think it would be a miracle for another person to be so psychic as to be able to pick a piece of jewelry that you're happy to wear every single day of your life,' one woman reasoned.

A few encouraged her to have the difficult talk as soon as possible, with others wishing her the best of luck.

'Any man worth marrying would want you to love your ring and won't hesitate to exchange, just tell him - you might be pleasantly surprised,' one woman said.

A wife who called herself 'old school' completely disagreed about asking the man for another ring, saying she came from a time when a woman didn't pick their own.

'I say accept the ring and all the thought put behind it,' she said.

Another wasn't taking such a kind outlook on the woman's dilemma.

'The superficiality of engagements and marriage now is astounding,' she said.

'Man, this just gives me the ick, that a material item blocks out this amazing life changing moment in your life? Yuck.'

This isn't the first time that a bride-to-be has turned to Reddit for advice after receiving an engagement ring that didn't fulfill her wishes.

An American woman recently shared her disappointment after discovering that her engagement ring contained a lab grown diamond.

While she loved the ring's 'beautiful' design, she couldn't help feeling like she had gotten 'second best' because it didn't feature a natural earth diamond.

She was unanimously slammed online for complaining about the ethical sparkler.

'I require my diamonds to be exploitative,' one woman said.
