My hostel put me in a double bed with a man I'd never met

A solo female traveller was 'horrified' after a hostel expected her to share a double bed with a male guest she'd never met.

The Aussie arrived at her accommodation late at night and was looking forward to getting into her single bed in a mixed dorm for a good night's sleep.

But she was in for an 'awkward' shock when the hostel instead offered her half of a double bed already occupied by a male guest - and her own separate duvet cover.

The young woman shared the uncomfortable scenario with an online travel group and asked them if shared beds were a common thing in hostels.

'Question, has anyone ever gotten a shared bed when in a hostel? I’m used to mixed dorms, but I’m literally sharing a bed with a guy I don’t know,' she asked.

'We each have our own duvet cover, but we’re in one bed. You can tell he’s feeling as awkward about it as I am.'

After asking if there was anyway to switch rooms, the hostel said there was nothing else available - leaving the lone woman stuck with the 'wild' sleeping arrangement.

'What do I do? It’s after 11pm so there’s not a lot I can do now, but would I be crazy to try and find different accommodation for tomorrow night?' she asked.

People were unanimous in slamming the hostel's 'rogue' move, which they were sure was the result of a booking error.

They said that being expected to share a double bed with a stranger was 'insane' - especially when the other person was the opposite sex.

'A shared bed? With a man? Full stop, unacceptable. I wouldn't even be comfortable sharing the same sleeping quarters with a man, they owe you a refund,' one woman said.

'What if he were to try something (not saying he would) but how do they think two strangers sharing a bed is okay in any way, let alone a male and a female,' another woman agreed.

'I would be out of there so fast - and I would report the hostel,' a third woman said.

Others thought the only way the awkward arrangement would be okay was if both people had agreed to it beforehand.

Someone from Perth who managed hostels, said that bed-sharing was definitely 'weird' and only ever done at the specific request of a guest.

But some travellers had unfortunately experienced the same embarrassing situation.

'This seems to be a thing in a couple of hostels, it's so weird and I do not understand it all, I always look at photos of beds now to avoid it,' one said.

One woman thought that the male bed-fellow feeling 'awkward' was a sign that the lone woman was safe for the night.

'Considering he's being respectful I would just go to sleep and wait until the morning... but I'd definitely be complaining as he could have been a weirdo!' she said.

Another woman couldn't believe that the unlikely situation had happened to someone in real life: 'That's mad! It sounds like the start of one of those cheesy romance films.'
