Republican leader has grave warning for the GOP ahead of the election
House Republicans' campaign chairman Rich Hudson warned his party on a call Thursday that Democrats are 'at the gates' for winning the majority in the lower chamber. He noted their big fundraising hauls over the weeks since Kamala Harris joined the top of the ticket.
'We still have a great shot to grow our majority. But the Democrats are at the gates – hauling in hundreds of millions of dollars in the last few weeks. If we’re going to accomplish our goal of growing our majority, I need you to want it,' Hudson said, as first reported by Punchbowl. The Democrats' House campaign arm, the DCCC, outraised Republicans, NRCC, last quarter $44 million to $37 million.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) had its best online fundraising day of the cycle, clocking in at nearly $1 million, in the 24 hours after Harris in the 24 hours after Biden replaced Harris at the top of the ticket. GOP leaders pledged more money on the call: Speaker Mike Johnson announced he would transfer $4 million, bringing his total for this cycle up to $20 million since becoming speaker, his team told DailyMail.com.
He's currently on a 20-state swing across the country. A FiveThirtyEight polling average found that Americans overall favor Democrats over Republicans running Congress, 46.3 to 45.2 percent.
Control for the House will be a contentious battle come November. Democrats felt confident they'd take the House before Biden's cognitive decline went on full display at the Trump-Biden debate. Republicans felt confident in their chances before Biden after that and before Biden dropped out of the race.
A poll this week conducted for DailyMail.com showed Vice President Kamala Harris has closed the gap on former President Donald Trump but still trails him by two points. Where other recent polls show the vice president surging ahead, our survey of 1001 likely voters found that 43 percent would vote for Trump if the election were tomorrow, compared with 41 percent who would vote for Harris.
With a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percent, it sets the stage for a nail-biter of an election in November. James Johnson, co-founder of J.L. Partners which conducted the poll, said that there were still plenty of positives in the poll for Trump after a trying period.
'Do not get us wrong. Harris has made big inroads—especially with young voters and blacks—and she has started to close the gap with independents. 'But Trump holds an advantage with his base, who remain more energized, and has held his position with whites, Hispanics, and voters over the age of 50.
'Harris's biggest support remains relatively limited to 18 to 49-year-olds. A lot of this is due to Trump’s dominance on the issues of the economy and the border.'
