This is the terrifying moment a man was chased by a massive crocodile while he swam in a lagoon in Mexico

The heart-stopping footage, which appeared to have been recorded from across the water, was posted to Reddit on Monday.

The man, who appeared to be disoriented, swam as fast as he could to the edge of the lagoon and tried to get out.

As he swam away, a massive crocodile quickly snuck up behind him in the green, murky water.

It is unclear exactly when and where the bizarre encounter took place.

He was seen struggling to get out of the water, but the man eventually threw himself over the stone ledge and walked away from the lagoon like nothing happened.

Video starts with the man casually swimming on his back before he spots the semiaquatic reptile lurching toward him.

He quickly flips over and starts swimming as fast as he can toward the edge of the lagoon.

As he does this, the people recording start to scream in terror, repeatedly saying 'No!'

The man then pulls his shoes off his feet while in the water and hurls them onto land as the crocodile inches closer.

The animal then disappears under water while the swimmer tries to lift himself up and out.

After a couple attempts, the man pulls himself up to the ledge, before lowering down and looking toward the camera.

His head then pulls back, disappears for a second, and is then seen whipping up and down in the water.

The man attempts to break free from the frightening creature, this time managing to climb out of the water and onto the stone.

Dressed in a navy tank top and slightly ripped khaki shorts, the exhausted swimmer dramatically rolls onto the ground and lays there for a couple of seconds.

He then rolls onto his back and starts to shake uncontrollably before leaning forward and holding himself up with his arms.

The man then grabs one of his shoes and appears to empty the water from it before putting it on his foot.

Once he has both shoes on, he scurries back to the edge of the wall and looks into the water.

He then grabs his right arm before the cameraman whistles at him and screams: 'Hey!'

The man looks up at the man and limps into the middle of the road where he appears to shadowbox, before looking back up at the audience and making strange faces.

The video ends with him walking away as people try to get his attention. An image of him showed that he was left with a cut on the back of his thigh.

Commenters quickly flocked under the bizarre video and reacted to the man's near-death experience.

'You have to treat him quickly because crocodiles have a lot of dead bacteria in their teeth and if they don't treat him quickly he can lose his leg,' one said on Instagram.

Another wrote: 'That wound is very infected, I hope they help him...'

While some worried about the health and safety of the man who miraculously made it out alive, others questioned his actions.

'Worst idea. Everyone knows shoes off = dead,' one said on Reddit.

'He was seriously contemplating if that near death experience was real or not,' said another.
