Miserable England fans start making their way home from Berlin after 2-1 defeat with flights jam-packed full of dejected supporters and others facing bleak drives... but some refuse to stop partying

Deflated Three Lions fans have began making the dreaded journey home from Berlin after their devastating EURO 2024 loss against Spain.

Gareth Southgate's squad walked away from the stadium shattered - and so too did their loyal supporters - after Spain dashed their EURO dreams, defeating the side 2-1.

Disappointment seemed to loom on the horizon when Spain scored a goal 47 minutes into the match, but super sub Cole Palmer managed to revive hopes with a brilliant equaliser in the 73rd-minute.

However the ambition of bringing football home was well and truly buried when the opposition bagged a goal with only minutes left on the clock.

Now the heartbroken Three Lions players make their journey back to British soil, and so too do droves of their 'gutted' fans, with some continuing to drown their sorrows well after final whistle was blown.

Hoards of downcast football fans are starting to make the long journey home with 14-hour drives ahead, whilst others were lucky to bag a direct flight home.

Certain supporters opted to get the train all the way home, as they promised Southgate's men would be back for a major title.

Others continued to drown their sorrows with one social media user even spotting intoxicated England supporters tripping over themselves in the German capital.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) to express their devastation, one fan wrote: 'On my way home from Berlin without football, gutted.'

A second was left feeling sick by the thought of her journey from Amsterdam to London and then Huddersfield, as one supporter remarked of the 'long journey home'.

One fan penned: 'The only thing cheering me u this morning is the £100 gamble I took six months ago on a direct flight from Berlin to Manchester. Get me home!'

'Getting to Berlin last minute was long. Getting home is even longer,' bemoaned another.

With a gruesome 12-hour journey ahead, one loyal supporter said: 'Journey home starts. Train to Berlin, train to Leipzig, flight to London, drive to Shrewsbury.

'Last ones out turn the lights out. I don't want to see or step foot in Germany for at least ten more years.'

Others looked on the brighter side of the heart-breaking loss, noting the incredible feat the England team achieved during this tournament.

1'4-hour road trip from Berlin back home begins. Not the result we wanted and a hard one to take, but what a great few weeks following England. We will be back, a fan said.

'Famous last words... but coach trip from Berlin to London is a kind of cool way to see some more sights before I go home,' one quipped.

Certain fans, who boarded a direct flight from the German capital city to Manchester were left also stranded this morning.

Only minutes after jetting into the skies the aircraft made an emergency landing due to 'unidentified odour in the cabin'.

Taking to the skies at 8.09am, the plane was 10,000 feet in the air before it turned around and returned to base.

The Eurowings airbus was packed with England fans when it was met by airport fire services on the tarmac in Berlin less than 20 minutes later.

Passenger Gareth Davies told the Independent:  'A few minutes into the flight the captain came on and said we had to go back to Berlin due to a warning light flashing on the controls

'Upon landing we sat there for a short period and :a smell of burning entered the cabin.

'We were told not to worry about the fire engines, take our luggage and not to take photos or videos 'because we don't want to be on TikTok'.

'We disembarked and gathered on the Tarmac surrounded by firefighters before buses took us to the terminal.

'Upon arrival at the terminal there was no one there except passport control. We hadn't been told what would happen next so we all went through passport control.

'People had no clue about their checked bags and many exited the baggage hall – I only had carry on.'

A spokesperson from Eurowings said: 'Flight EW8470 from Berlin to Manchester made an unscheduled return to Berlin this morning due to an undefined odour in the cabin.

'An "air emergency" was declared, a standard procedure to obtain a prioritised landing.

'The aircraft landed normally at BER at around 8.30 am. Passengers and crew left the aircraft via passenger stairs provided and were taken to the terminal by bus.

'The aircraft was then inspected by the fire brigade. There were no findings. There was neither a fire nor smoke in the cabin.

'There were 150 passengers on board the Airbus A319. There was no danger to passengers or crew at any time.

They added: 'Safety is always the top priority at Eurowings. An alternative flight was arranged for the affected passengers.

This comes shortly after England fans in Spain drowned their sorrows on the streets of Benidorm as their EURO 2024 dreams were dashed after the Three Lion's defeat.
