Brisbane, Melbourne weather: Bizarre phenomenon as temperatures go topsy turvy in Queensland

An Aussie state known for its sunny weather all year round has been blasted by freezing temperatures after a cold snap swept across the region, smashing records along the way.

Temperatures plummeted across Queensland as the minimum temperature in Brisbane Airport overnight on Monday reached 6.3C.

Tropical areas were also hit by the cold blast with Townsville in the north reaching 8.6C, while Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast reached just 3.7C.

Residents in southern inland parts of the Sunshine State shivered through sub-zero temperatures.

Oakey, near Toowoomba, recorded the coldest morning across the state since May last year as temperatures dipped down to a low of -4.4C at 6.30am.

More than 80 Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) sites recorded temperatures lower than Melbourne, where the weather is frequently cold and cloudy during winter.

Senior meteorologist Harry Clark told Daily Mail Australia that a dry air mass across the state has led to the cold weather.

'That heat can basically radiate quite efficiently out to the atmosphere so certainly the last few nights have been on the cold side for much of Queensland,' Mr Clark explained.

He added that temperatures in Melbourne are slightly warmer because of the cloud cover that has created more humid conditions.

The Victorian capital hit a minimum of 9.9C - more than three degrees warmer than Brisbane Airport.

Mr Clark said the weather will start to warm up in Queensland by Thursday with above average temperatures expected by the end of the working week.

'[It will be] another cold morning tomorrow across central and southern parts in particular with frost expected inland once again,' he said.

Brisbane is expected to reach minimum temperatures of below-10C on Tuesday and Wednesday before it increases to 13C by Thursday.

The minimum temperature in Townsville will increase to 10C on Tuesday before warming up to a low of 14C is expected on Wednesday.

Mr Clark explained the cold snap is not unusual for this time of year but added several weather records have been broken as a result of freezing conditions.

'Winton [in Central Queensland] got down to 0.6C on Saturday morning, that was the coldest temperature we've recorded there in 22 years,' he said.

Elsewhere, Mr Clark said a cold front will move down the southern parts of Australia's east coast.

Conditions will be very windy in Melbourne on Wednesday with showers expected on Thursday and for parts of the weekend.

Elsewhere across Australia, Sydney will experience a cold start to the day on Tuesday and Wednesday before the temperature rises on Wednesday.

A shower or two is expected across the harbour city on Friday and the weekend is expected to be mostly clear.
