Moment scorned boyfriend Chance Donohoe who slit his ex's throat in jealous rage sits stone-faced at sentencing as he listens to her family's heartbreaking statements and learns his fate

An Ohio man has been sentenced to life in jail after he stabbed his ex-girlfriend 30 times before slitting her throat to 'speed up the process'.

Chance Donohoe, 27, was stone-faced in court as the judge handed down his punishment for the brutal slaying of Shannon Hiott, 29.

Hiott's family read heartbreaking victim impact statements describing their incomprehensible loss.

'I could talk all day about her accomplishments, how smart, beautiful and thoughtful she was. What I can't talk about is how devastating this has been on me and my family,' Hiott's mom Jamie told the court.

Donohoe told investigators he had murdered Hiott in a jealous rage after believing she had begun seeing someone else.

'To the family and friends of Shannon, I am truly sorry,' Donohoe told the court. 'I wish I could take it back. I hope the verdict today serves justice.'

Hiott's sister Lana Hiott begged the judge to prosecute Donohoe to the fullest extent of the law and deny the chance for parole.

Donohoe was  given life without possibility of parole until he has served 31 years.

He admitted breaking into Hiott's Columbus home on August 29 last year and stabbing her multiple times.

The killer fled to his mother's house before calling police to confess and turning himself in at a Sheetz gas station.

He pleaded guilty to one murder charge and abuse of a corpse.

His defense tried to argue for leniency at sentencing by claiming Donohoe was on a cocktail of drugs and alcohol at the time of the killing which included marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamines.

Donohoe is said to have lost his temper after seeing posts by Hiott describing how much happier she was after their breakup.

Lana Hiott's said her sister ended the relationship after discovering that Donohue was stealing from her.

He was lurking around her home when he saw another vehicle parked outside sending him further into the frenzy.

He then drove 20 miles to his home in Powell where he changed into all black and grabbed a knife before driving back to carry out the sick attack.

Assistant Franklin County Prosecutor Dan Lenert said Donohoe screwed Hiott's front door shut following the depraved attack.

'I can only imagine what was going through Shannon's mind as he busts in her door and starts stabbing her,' Lenert said, the Columbus Dispatch reports.

'He told the police he slit her throat to speed up the process.

'This was not drugs, this is not ketamine, this is not methamphetamine, this is not cocaine, this is someone that's angry.

'He's p*****d off about posts being made about him on social media. He's upset about their breakup and he goes to her house that night and sees a vehicle from another man that he knows that he recognizes.'
