I was charged £533 for two orange peppers: Shopper reveals how supermarket's 'technical error' left her overdrawn and incurring bank charges

A woman who was charged over £500 for two orange peppers in her ASDA online food shop had been left overdrawn and incurring bank charges.

Kate Jones, from Worcester, was initially charged £92 for her food shop delivery which she received last Tuesday.

But when she looked at her bank balance two days later, she noticed an extra charge had been added, bringing the total up to £626 for the shop.

She had been charged £533.36 for two orange peppers which should cost 59p each.

Ms Jones, who is a wheelchair user, said shopping online is an 'absolute lifeline' for her as she cannot carry lots of bags.

She reached out to ASDA who agreed to refund Ms Jones and claimed a 'technical error' was responsible for the inflated cost of the peppers.

Ms Jones said she was promised she would be refunded in 24hours and was offered a £50 gift voucher.

But the supermarket has only just refunded her one week on.

Speaking to the BBC, Ms Jones said: 'It's nearly a week since I've done my shopping and I need to do some more but I'm having to live day by day now because I don't trust using my bank card.'

She said if she hadn't been so 'vigilant' checking her bank account, she might not have noticed until she was notified about the bank charges.

Direct debits and recurring payments are continuing to come out of her bank account, she added.

'My bank have said any charges I do get will be refunded,' she said, adding: 'I hope they honour that.'

A spokesperson for ASDA said:  'Due to a technical error two fresh products were momentarily listed incorrectly on our website, however this was immediately resolved, and full refunds were processed for the small number of impacted customers who were overcharged.

'We would like to apologise to Ms Jones for the time it has taken to receive her refund and the inconvenience this has caused. We have since contacted Ms Jones to process her refund in full and offer her a gesture of goodwill.'
