Young Aussie exposes why Australia will go cashless soon

A young woman's confusion over what she's meant to do with cash has reignited the debate over whether Australia should become a cashless society.

Gold Coast teen Jazmin Hermione, 19, was left with $10 from a Facebook Marketplace sale but was dumbfounded on what to do with the cash.

'What are we doing with cash these days?,' she asked in a video earlier this month.

'Where the hell do I put it? What do I do with this?

'Am I really going to go to the bank to deposit $10? Do I go spend it?'

Ms Hermione explained she usually only carries her phone with her, which she uses to pay.

'I don't ever carry purse, to be honest I don't even know if I own one,' she said.

Commenters were shocked by Ms Hermione's confusion and said her video was a sign Australia will soon turn cashless.

Honest talk now, what are we doing with cash. Where do I put it, should I save it, spend it? Do I deposit it? Someone tell me what I should do because I never use cash ever! #cashlesssociety #cash #savingmoney #lifeinyour20s

'Wow, here is the end. Once a generation has to ask what to do with cash, you can be confident cashless society will happen,' one wrote.

'You know you can buy things with cash, right?,' another said.

'Is this really a question?,' another wrote.

Ms Hermione didn't expect such a negative response to her video and said she and her friends often struggle to use any cash that comes their way.

'I was actually quite surprised with the comments because I think, for my age at least, no one uses cash and often my friends have the same problem,' she told Yahoo Finance.

'... I use ApplePay always, so my card is on my phone, so there is no need for me to carry a wallet or even a bag with me.'

Thankfully, some commenters did offer Ms Hermione useful suggestions.

'Keep it for an emergency, like when eftpos fails or shops that only take cash. I always keep cash for situations like that,' one said.

'I just leave it in the car or my bedside table until I need to use cash,' another wrote.

Another suggested: 'Pop it in a little jar and if you get more cash you can deposit the whole thing, or go get yourself a lil treat for now!'

Ms Hermione liked the last suggestion the best and has started a cash tin.

'I am not too sure what the money tin will be used for yet, perhaps the holiday I'm planning on taking next year, all I know is it's something fun,' she said.
