After failing in efforts to sign Edson Alvarez from Ajax and Ibrahim Sangare from PSV Eindhoven, Chelsea turned their attention to the 6ft 3ins Swiss international, who moved to Juventus in January for £4m after leaving Borussia Monchengladbach.
He had been recommended to Manchester United by Ralf Rangnick, and was under consideration at Newcastle before Chelsea made their shock swoop.

After two years there, the 25-year-old moved to Borussia Monchengladbach, making 125 appearances across five years, before his move to the Italian giants.
He scored on his debut in February, less than a week after signing a four-and-a-half year contract at the Allianz Stadium.
This season, Zakaria started in Juventus' opening game of the campaign but has since only been named among the substitutes, coming off the bench in Saturday's draw against Roma and sitting out the other two fixtures so far.
Juventus play Fiorentina on Saturday, before beginning their Champions League campaign away to PSG on Tuesday.

Chelsea also announced the signing of Barcelona hitman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang just after the deadline, capping off a dramatic final day of transfer activity at the club.
The 33-year-old striker has joined the Blues in a deal worth £10.3m.
Chelsea will next face a Premier League test at home to West Ham on Saturday, before travelling to Dinamo Zagreb for their first Champions League group stage match on Tuesday.
