Thanks for following along!

You guessed it - we'll be back tomorrow with even more group stage action, including the tournament return of Portugal, and major tournament debut of Georgia.

Roy Keane slams 'out of order' Kylian Mbappe for deliberate time-wasting tactic after breaking his nose

Needless to say, Keane wasn't entirely empathetic with Mbappe's technique for hastening play to a halt to get himself subbed off.

You can read the ITV pundit's view, below.

Ralf Rangnick speaks in his post-match press conference

I think that Deschamps was happy at full-time and I think that shows the great performance from my team.
They left everything on the pitch (…) I spoke with Upamecano too and he said he was happy it was over. It shows our level of performance

21:40

Austria's demolition job

Austria may not have claimed victory in Dusseldorf, but topped the leaderboard in one aspect: a simply agricultural number of tackles.

In their opener, Rangnick's side made a staggering 27 to try and fell those flighty French players, with second-placed Ukraine lagging well behind having made just 18 as they were routed by Romania.

Plus, Seiwald has won an individual honour. Chapeau. Or, gut gemacht.

21:35

Félicitations, Didier

That's 100 wins in charge of the French national team for the former Bleu, with his eye trained firmly on a handful more.

Winning the World Cup as both a player and a manger? Check. Next up, the French manager will want to be reuninted with the Henri Delaunay Trophy, which he won on the pitch in 2000.

Next up on TF1, it's Player of the Match N'Golo Kante

It's nice to be back. I'm happy to be back with the French team.
Hearing the supporters shout my name gives strength. Thank you all.

His team-mate Jules Kounde also shouted him out after the final whistle:

Nothing has changed with N'Golo Kante.
He was monstrous.

Didier Deschamps shares a nose update with TF1

Apparently the nose is not good at all.
So we’ll see. It’s obviously the negative point of the evening. Even if it’s just his nose it’s annoying for us.

A lot of screenshots from this evening show Mbappe's nose with a new croissant-like curve at the bridge. If it's not broken, he might have bones made of Play-Doh.

21:20

Ian Herbert's report from Dusseldorf is hot of the proverbial presses

Cast your eye over his assessment of tournament favourites France now that they've actually kicked off their campaign, below.

21:15

MATCH STATS: A contest on a knife's edge

Beaten with no small amount of French grit, Austria still represent a considerable threat after Rangnick's revamp.

Have a browse through how the teams were head-to-head, now that the dust has settled.

21:11

PLAYER RATINGS: Which French attacker MUST do more to stay in the team? And which Austria defender had an evening to forget?

Mail Sport's Nathan Salt also spent the evening in Dusseldorf and has run the rule over the two intensely-competetive side.

But who gets full marks, and who must try harder?

Have a look, below.

21:08

N'Golo Kante, back to his best?

It's been two years since Kante was last selected for Deschamps' side, after being hampered by injury at the tail end of his Chelsea campaign.

It would be easy to cast aspersions on the levels that Kante has been subjected to in the Saudi Pro League after his move to Al-Ittihad, but after staying injury-free, there was certainly no drop in the midfielder's quality in his first outing at this tournament.

It's not hard to look good in this France team, but to look exceptional is something else entirely.

21:03

An unpleasant - and unwanted - injury

That injury picked up by Mbappe was a stomach-churner. And by the looks of things, the captain has broken his nose.

I imagine frantic calls are already being made to secure the Frenchman a protective mask - but how Mbappe will be feeling and how it might affect his ability to train or play will be of no small concern to Deschamps.

FULL-TIME: Austria 0-1 France

Austria have subdued late French threat, and now Baumgartner sets off on the right look to find something at the death - but France do enough to ward them away until the whistle blows!

A hard-fought France victory, in the end. Austria gave them a run for their money, but France's quality... just dazzles.

20:56, 97'

Austria 0-1 France

Giroud, France's record goalscorer, has an absolute howler in front of goal, waiting patiently for the ball after Kolo Muani's clever run from the right. He's plum in front of Pentz's net, but when his team-mate cuts to him, he nudges the turf.

Austria take advantage, and set off, looking truly menacing as a shot rolls just past Maignan after a hasty spot of defending. Austria's corner prompts some strong French defending - and now they break!

20:53, 95'

Austria 0-1 France

Wimmer has been a real pest for France since his introduction, and he mounts the next Austria attack as they seek to capitalise on their talisman's absence.

Rangnick's side threaten, before Kante finally knocks the ball back out of the box.

20:50, 92'

Austria 0-1 France

Wimmer is the next to go down, after he collides with Hernandez in a very similar way that Mbappe knocked into Danso.

While play slows, let me bring you those eventual France changes: Fofana and Giroud on for Griezmann and Mbappe.

There'll also be nine minutes added.

20:48, 89'

Austria 0-1 France

Mbappe wants to continue, of course, but his shirt is pink with blood, and he must be in an enormous amount of pain.

On the sidelines, France substitutes wait to see who they're coming on for.

Austria swaps Mwene for Prass, but in a bizarre turn of events, when the ball goes out of play, the referee doesn't call for France subs.

Mbappe on the sidelines comes back on and sits down clutching his nose in a bid to stop the game, and is handed a yellow card for unallowed entering the field of play. Deschamps is absolutely fuming, and gets a yellow card too.

A miscommunication which feels unfair on the captain, who felt he had little choice but to stop play after that misstep.

Austria 0-1 France

Kante, Kante, Kante!

Griezmann's ball finds Mbappe's head, but as he heads it, he crashes into Danso's shoulder in a truly grim replay.

Austria counter while the France captain is down, Wimmer sprinting away, but the adored defensive midfielder pegs it and swipes the ball off him just as he arrives in the box. International football has missed N'Golo Kante.

But play halts as Pentz waves the medics towards Mbappe. He's still down, blood flowing from his nose. Nasty, nasty crash.

Austria 0-1 France

Two France entries into the Austria box end limply in quick succession, first after Kolo Muani squares a good ball straight to a red shirt, and second when Mbappe tees up Thuram in front of goal, only for his team-mate to pass straight into Pentz's gloves.

But France get another chance after a weak Austria freekick, countering quickly and making good ground.

Their run is cut short when Mbappe tangles with Laimer, and the forward is apoplectic to be given a yellow card when the France captain collapses. A trailing arm made it a far chance, but Griezmann now has the chance to fire in a freekick level with the box.

20:37, 78'

Austria 0-1 France

Kolo Muani picks his way down the right before bursting into the box, but Danso does well to force him off the ball - the forward's quick revenge hands Austria a freekick, which Pentz takes level with his goal.

Austria still have energy to burn, and Baumgartner is the next to strike, running onto the ball in the box and firing at goal. Unfortunately, Maignan is off his line and sliding for it, and the pair collide, with a ball sandwiched between them.

Baumgartner gets a yellow card for his efforts, despite being first to the ball.

20:33, 74'

Austria 0-1 France

France's latest chance comes to nowt after Thuram dances towards the box only for his final lay-off to fly into Row E, or thereabouts.

At the other end, France have a freekick from 30 yards out and right to defend, which Wimmer feeds into the box. Maignan is quick off his line to palm the ball away from danger.

WATCH: Mbappe's major miss

Something to prompt the ghost of a chuckle from Wober, in time.

20:28, 70'

Austria 0-1 France

Deschamps is next to ring the changes, with Kolo Muani replacing Dembele, and Rabiot swapped off for Camavinga.

20:25, 67'

Austria 0-1 France

Austria are keeping the pressure up, and Kounde falters to hand them a corner. They can't do much with it, and France are on the march again, Kante showing the European leagues what they're missing a season after his Saudi Arabia move.

The former Chelsea man sneaks through the midfield, ball glued to his feet, but can't break into the box on the right.

Instead, play switches to the left wing, and Griezmann has a shot which streaks across the goal face, before Kounde tries to get onto the end of the next effort. Harum-scarum stuff for Austria to rebuff, but they deal with it well.

France have wrenched momentum back, however, and looking very dangerous.

Austria 0-1 France

Kante slides onto the ball with ease in the midpack, before handing off to a sprinting Dembele. He tumbles down the right, before firing just north of the box... only for his attempt to fly straight over the crossbar.

20:20, 62'

Austria 0-1 France

Sabitzer streaks through on the left looking to run onto the ball in the box, but is set upon by Saliba and Upamecano. He goes down and cries go up for a penalty - but the referee waves away concerns immediately.

VAR certainly doesn't seem bothered, neglecting to make even a cursory check.

Rangnick rolls the dice, bringing on Arnautovic, Trauner, and Wimmer for Gregoritsch, Grillitsch, and Wober, to switch things up just ahead of the hour mark.

20:13, 55'

Austria 0-1 France

Some semblance of humanity from Mbappe!

Racing onto the ball, he steams past Wober, who attempts to give chase, and arrives in the box streets ahead of the rest of the field. Staring down Pentz, he fires at goal - and misses in - for him - spectacular fashion.

Mbappe's wait for a goal at a European Championship rolls on.

Austria 0-1 France

Grillitsch wafts the ball through to Sabitzer, who fires in a good-looking cross from the left, but France lock up, and within moments, have spun play to counter quickly.

Thuram sprints towards the left to send a ball into the box, but Austria quickly deal with the threat. No drifting off around this lot, that's for sure.

20:07, 49'

Austria 0-1 France

Griezmann comes trudging on, dressed up like Mr Bump, as France flood forward, Kante squaring the ball into the box and forcing some hurried defending from Austria.

Nul point for the France medical team, however, as the visor/bandage almost immediately springs off Griezmann's curly mop and lands on the pitch. He ignores it, less bothered by dripping blood than faulty dressings.

Roy Keane backs Didier Deschamps' 'unorthodox' treatment of William Saliba

Saliba starts for France this evening, but he's far from the first name that springs to mind when Deschamps is drawing up the team sheet.

But Roy Keane has sided with the France manager with his handling of the Arsenal star. How so? You can find out, below.

HALF-TIME: France winning Battle of the Croissant* thus far

It couldn't have happened in a more unedifying way for Ralf Rangnick's side, but France deserve to have the upper hand in what has been an highly watchable contest so far.

The former Manchester United manager will need to give one almighty team talk to make sure that Austria don't crumple. Imbue this France side with confidence at their peril.

Mail Sport's Ian Herbert on Mbappe's role in France's opener

Desperately unfortunate for Max Wober to turn the ball into his own net, but that moment was all about Mbappe and his dancing shoes.
His step over, his advance past the defender on the right side of the box and the stabbed cross, creating panic in the Austrian area. The new captain has been a shining light in this first-half.

Goal: An own goal fells Austria! (Wober 38')

Just moments after Austria came close, it's a red shirt at the other end who finds the back of the net.

Who else but Mbappe skitters down the right, trailing Mwene, and he fires in a cross to the six-yard box - only for Wober to head the ball in like he was singing La Marseillaise 40 minutes ago.

Heartbreaking for the Austrians.

What a toe-curling miss for Austria!

Gregoritsch on the left picks up a long pass from Grillitsch, and sends a zippy cross into the box, for a waiting Sabitzer. The former Man United man sneaks it forward, and Baumgartner seemingly has the dream shot - only for the ball to be saved by Maignan.

A heroic bit of 'keeping from the Milan shot-stopper... Austria are aghast.

19:33, 32'

Austria 0-0 France

We are enlightened by the fact that, as the clock passes the half-hour mark, this is the longest a match has been played without a goal at this European Championship.

After a day of shocks and upsets, I must say, one feels overdue.

Baumgartner, wise to my plea, sneaks through the box and attempts to go for goal, but the France defence shuts down the threat with ease.

19:30, 29'

Austria 0-0 France

Gregoritsch attempts to push his way into the French penalty area but he's waylaid by Upamecano, to howls of dsimay from the Austria fans in the stands.

Upamecano was certainly bullish from behind, but play is waved on, and France take the opportunity to see action in the Austrian half for the first time in a little while.

19:27, 26'

Austria 0-0 France

Baumgartner outsmarts the napping France defence and marauds into the box, but he's set upon in front of goal by Kounde and Upamecano, who boots the ball away to safety.

Austria are holding their own, for now, and stringing together a nice spell of threat.

19:24, 23'

Austria 0-0 France

Mwene attempts to push past Dembele and wins Austria's first corner of the match as he streaks down the left flank.

The ball is lofted in nicely, and Maignan is taking no chances - he strides out and leaps to grab the ball, bundling it onto the turf.

Mail Sport's Ian Herbert weighs in on a somewhat mollified Austria

Any hope Austria had of blitzing France from the off have evaporated. The first 15 have been all about the explosive French left flank.
Two powerful runs from Theo Hernandez down that side and then Kylian Mbappe being given free rein to bear down on keeper Parrick Pentz who did well to turn the ball around the post. Breathtaking work.

19:20, 19'

Austria 0-0 France

Mbappe is aching for the header but the kick isn't weighted for the assist - and Pentz makes a straightforward save.

Rabiot sets up an excellent Griezmann run, the Atletico Madrid star slaloming in from the right to fire towards goal. He wins a corner, but sends an apology Dembele's way - the right-handed forward could have done more with a sideways ball instead.

19:17, 15'

Austria 0-0 France

Austria want to get going, but a Danso's hefty header to push the ball down the pitch tumbles Mbappe, and the referee pulls play back, the ball back at French boots.

As Saliba sparks play up the pitch, Dembele sprints towards the box from the right, and Wober won't be moved - picking up a yellow card for his trouble.

Another France freekick, and this one looks tantalising for Griezmann...

19:14, 12'

Austria 0-0 France

Austria look to test France's defences, but an attempt to head the ball past Maignan lands in the 'keeper's gloves.

At the other end, Hernandez sneaks through Austria high up on the left, beating his man to slide the ball across the face of Pentz's goal. Thuram is furious he wasn't able to latch onto the end of it.

Austria 0-0 France

A feisty chance from Mbappe! France break and while Hernandez's run is cut short when he's tumbled, Rabiot can nick the ball forward to the captain, who sprints down the left to fire at a tight angle.

He lashes it, but Pentz can just tip it out for a maiden France corner. Little comes of it - but France have showed their teeth.

Austria 0-0 France

Hernandez ushers the ball up the pitch after being fed by Kante, and as he charges towards the centre of the Austria half, he's brought down like a ton of bricks by Danso, who goes barrelling into him.

Griezmann has another freekick, this time a little more centrally, but some way out - and when looking for Saliba again, he can only find a crop of red shirts.

19:04, 4'

Austria 0-0 France

Greizmann fires in the first France set-piece, and Saliba looks to get his head to it, but he's crowded out by the Austria defence.

France keep hold of possession now, and play back to Maignan to edge up the pitch once more.

19:02, 2'

Austria 0-0 France

Rangnick was keen to get on the front foot, and they have the early possesion, with Baumgartner sending a flyer from the left into the box... only for it to be drawn like a magnetic to Maignan's gloves.

France can trip forward now, Rabiot looking to push Mbappe through on the left, but a France-advance is shut down when the captain is felled by Laimer. Freekick to the French, 30 yards out.

KICK-OFF: Austria 0-0 France

With an enormous roar from the crowd, we're underway in Dusseldorf!

Anthem-watch

The players emerge from the tunnel, after nearly every single mascot has pestered Mbappe for a quick shirt signing - as you absolutely would, if given the chance.

France get the party started with a rousing rendition of La Marseillaise - a perennial crowd pleaser.

The Austrian national anthem is by contrast, a bit of a dirge, which no amount of cymbals can enliven. It does get going around the final verse, however, to its credit.

Meanwhile, Ian Herbert has been on flag-watch:

The world's best footballer with France on his shoulders: Now Kylian Mbappe wants to follow in Cristiano Ronaldo's path in the Euros and at Real Madrid

Six years on from his seismic World Cup win and entry onto the biggest stage of all, Kylian Mbappe starts a blockbuster summer leading France in pursuit of European Championship glory.

But what about the Mbappe behind close doors? Mail Sport's Nathan Salt takes a look, below.

18:44

Kylian Mbappe discusses the France captaincy with ITV

I'm very happy. Being captain of your country is unbelievable. I think every child dreams of it.
There's no additional pressure, it's a responsibility, but we're going to make sure we play as we normally do.
(This Euros is) different from other tournaments, when I would normally focus on myself and my performance. Now I have to think about others first.

On Didier Deschamps:

We've developed a relationship that is very strong. I really admire him, and I think it's mutual.

Both Deschamps and Mbappe have a World Cup to their name, but unlike his manager, the captain has gone without European honours... will that be the case in just a handful of weeks' time?

Mail Sport's Ian Herbert is at large in Dusseldorf

The Austrians have outnumbered the France in Dusseldorf all day and they’ve made the most noise so far, making a vivid sea of red behind one goal. That confidence is borne of how Ralf Rangnick has created real belief in the national team with his high pressing approach. They’re a team now known for getting off to a flyer.

Inside Marko Arnautovic's chequered past: The Austrian star has been accused of racism, Jose Mourinho slammed his attitude and he got BANNED at the last Euros

Austria forward Marko Arnautovic is set to play in his third European Championship this summer at the age of 35, and his side could hardly have been given a tougher opening task.

On Monday night, Ralf Rangnick's men will take on France, a team much fancied by many to go all the way in Germany, in their first Euro 2024 match.

Arnautovic could be left to lead the line against the formidable French as Austria look to spring an upset, and they will need their talisman at his very best.

What Rangnick had to say about Austria's opener against France

'With France we might have the strongest opponents of all right at the start [of the tournament]. They are the absolute favourites for the title, not only at this Euro, but also in two years at the World Cup.

'France surely must be the nation with the highest quality. Even if the starting XI are injured, the 11 substitutes are not much weaker. So the first match will be a huge challenge.

'Afterwards, we’ll see. We’ll only know our next opponents in March after the play-off games. And then the third match is against the Netherlands.

'If you want to get through that group, you’ll need at least four, but maybe even five or six points, and we’re aware of that situation.'

Who saw this coming?

France and Austria are in the building!

Both sets of players have arrived at the Merkur Spiel-Arena in Dusseldorf ahead of kick-off in around an hour's time.

It must be said the Austrians are looking very dapper having arrived suited and booted for the opening game, while Les Bleus are keeping things relaxed in their tracksuits.

TEAM GUIDE – Austria: They're ready to shock the continent... but how far can Ralf Rangnick's side go after near-perfection in qualifiers?

Austria will go into this European Championship as one of the dark horses, believe it or not.

While history may not favour them, they will want to rewrite it following their impressive rise over the past two years under the guidance of Ralf Rangnick.

Before his arrival in April 2022, Austria were known to be dull and fans had fallen out of love with their own national team.

TEAM GUIDE – France: Can Les Bleus get over their recent European Championship hoodoo?

As the runners and riders are weighed up ahead of Euro 2024 this summer, there are few teams with more quality, experience and knowhow across their playing and coaching staff than France.

Alongside the likes of England, Portugal, Spain and Germany, Didier Deschamps' side are one of the favourites to go all the way when the tournament gets underway on June 14.

An embarrassing exit from Euro 2020 in the last-16 to Switzerland has been sandwiched by a first and second place finish at two World Cups and they are certainly not a team to be taken lightly.

Revealed: How Rangnick revitalised Austria and got them singing from the same hymn sheet

When Ralf Rangnick left his role as Manchester United interim boss in May 2022, derided and mocked after a difficult spell in charge, there were serious questions marks over what was next for the experienced German coach.

Rangnick was about to turn 64 and although he had been extremely successful in both his homeland and Austria - where Rangnick was widely credited as the architect of the Red Bull footballing empire - the chastening experience at Old Trafford raised questions about his relevance in the modern game.

Yet, even the most optimistic of Rangnick's supporters could perhaps not have imagined what would would subsequently unfold.

It's culinary warfare in Germany!

First it was spaghetti, now it's baguettes.

Just days after Albanian fans snapped the dry pasta in half in front of Italian faces, the Austrians have taken it a step further.

In another comedic exchange, one Austrian supporter has one baguette held hostage, with a worried Frenchman looking on and begging for mercy, before it's snapped before his eyes.

It's all in jest though and they have a warm embrace afterwards.

The atmosphere is building in Dusseldorf

Thousands upon thousands of France and Austria supporters are marching to the Merkur Spiel-Arena ahead of kick-off.

Both sets of fans are bringing the party atmosphere which is exactly what everyone wants to see.

Good evening everyone!

And welcome to Mail Sport's live blog for the third and final group stage game of the day – France versus Austria.

It'll be the first look we get at Kylian Mbappe this tournament, with plenty of eyes on the Frenchman following his huge announcement that he will be joining Real Madrid for next season.

However, they should expect no walkovers in Austria.

Ralf Rangnick's men (yes, the same Rangnick who endured a horror interim spell at Man United) are flying are unbeaten in seven matches coming into the tournament and are revitalised under his stewardship.

It promises to be an intriguing match-up and a potential banana skin for France could be on the cards if they aren't at the races.

Kick-off is two hours away so sit tight with Mail Sport and we'll bring you all the build-up to the final instalment of today's group-stage action.
