End of the road for Scotland...

It is indeed yet more heartache for Scotland.

They came into this tournament, and tonight, with hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages for the first time in the country's history.

Well, those dreams were crushed in the 10th minute of stoppage time when Kevin Csoboth swept home for Hungary on the counter-attack.

In Frankfurt, Niclas Fullkrug saved the day for Germany to earn them a point against Switzerland in added time.

It means they top Group A with seven points, while Switzerland qualify for the round of 16 with five.

Hungary still have a slight chance of qualification, but they need various results to go their way.

You know what that means... Scotland finish bottom.

Anyway, I think it's time to call it a night. As always, it has been a pleasure to take you through the night.

I will catch you all very soon!

'Scotland were timid'

Aadam Patel, Mail Sport, at the Stuttgart Arena:

I've been at all three of Scotland's games here in Germany and yes, their fans will be missed but in truth, they deserve to be knocked out. Over the course of the three games, they've simply not shown enough on the pitch.
Here, Hungary were there for the taking but Scotland were timid in the first half and left it way too late before they threw the kitchen sink at it. It's yet more agony for the Tartan Army.

Man of the moment

Kevin Csoboth may never score a bigger goal than that.

When he entered proceedings off the bench, not many people were expecting him to decide the match. I certainly wasn't.

But he did, and he did so right at the last possible moment. It was his first-ever international goal too.

The celebration scenes were incredible.

Super Sub Fullkrug

Niclas Fullkrug is the definition of a super sub.

I know players don't like being branded as one, but it's hard not to do so with Fullkrug at the international level.

He came up trumps when Germany needed him most today like a true super sub would do.

It was his fourth goal off the bench for his country in major tournaments, not bad, eh?

He pops up when it matters most.

Szoboszlai shows support to Varga

Dominik Szoboszlai swapped his shirt at full-time with one adorning the name of his injured teammate Barnabus Varga.

The Hungarian skipper was seen in tears at the time of the incident, it unsurprisingly scared him.

Such a little gesture like this at the end of a match to show support is so lovely.

Steve Clarke: 'It was 100 per cent a penalty'

Steve Clarke, Scotland boss, speaking to BBC Sport:

The goal comes as a consequence of us trying to win the game. The goal is almost irrelevant. The moment for me was the penalty. It was 100 per cent a penalty. Someone has to explain to me why it wasn't a penalty because otherwise, I'm thinking there's something wrong. I don't understand how VAR can look at that and say it's not a penalty.
It was always a one-goal game. We didn't manage to get the goal, we opened up at the end to try and get it. The overriding feeling is to be sad for everybody, for the supporters, and the country, and the players are just as sad as everyone else.

The trigger-shy Scottish

You've heard the term 'trigger-happy', now what about 'trigger-shy'.

Well, it's a term that perfectly describes this Scottish side. It seems they are scared of shooting.

They only managed four shots tonight, only one of which was on target.

In the whole tournament, they only managed 17... That's a figure you'd expect in one match on occasion, not three combined.

Now that's what you call going out with a whimper.

21:50

Tough to take

These pictures tell you all you need to know.

The Scotland fans are absolutely devastated, hands went straight to heads as soon as they saw their side concede late on.

You just know that it is going to sting for a while, there was so much optimism ahead of the match.

Some fans are still in the Stuttgart Arena, and they could be there for a while.

A tough night to be Scottish.

21:43

Group A final standings

This table really is a sorry viewing for Scotland.

The Tartan Army haven't just crashed out of the European Championship, but they have finished bottom of Group A with a single point.

Hungary can still qualify for the knockout stage via third place, but they need several results to go their way.

Germany and Switzerland's draw means they finish first and second. Job done for both of them.

For Scotland, though, the dream is over.

21:37

Alan Shearer: 'Clear penalty'

Alan Shearer, former England captain, speaking on BBC One:

Clear penalty for me. I think the assistant had a great view. It's a terrible challenge, he [Willy Orban] gets caught and takes him out. His right knee onto his calf, clearly. That for me is a clear, clear penalty. I think that is a clear and obvious error. Clearly, he's taken him down.

David Moyes, former West Ham United boss, speaking on BBC One:

I think that's a penalty kick as well. That's a reckless challenge from the defender. We were all shouting here that VAR will at least check that.

21:33

Should Scotland have had a penalty?

I'll answer. Yes, they should have.

On the balance of play, Scotland did not deserve to win tonight, they only started pushing as they got more desperate.

But they can feel hard done by that they were not awarded a spot kick just over ten minutes from time.

Don't know what I am talking about? Well, substitute Stuart Armstrong was away in the area before he was brought down by Willy Orban.

I have watched the clip several times, and still don't know how it wasn't given.

What do you think?

21:29

Roland Sallai: 'Most important thing is that Varga is better'

Roland Sallai, Hungary winger, speaking to the Hungary Football social media:

The most important thing is that Barni [Varga] is better, we fought for it in the last 20 minutes. In the end, we showed what kind of team we are, we never give up, this is our strength.
21:25

Csoboth dedicates goal to Varga

This was a lovely gesture from Kevin Csoboth.

After arising from the pile-on that followed his last-gasp winner, Csoboth was given the shirt of Barnabas Varga - who suffered a scary head injury.

They will be undoubtedly worried about the well-being of their compatriot.

21:18

'The lads are absolutely gutted'

Andy Robertson, Scotland captain, speaking on BBC One:

There's nothing really to say to be honest. We gave it everything. We had to win this game. Both teams had to win and they've hit us on the counter-attack. We've had a chance there and it could have gone either way but that's football.
It will take a long time to get over this one. We had a lot of possession first half without really doing anything with it but we were in control, we controlled the game passing the ball really well. We just had to find that cutting-edge. We knew there would be a point in the game where we could go for it. We did go for it but yea, we got sucker punched at the end. Both teams had to go for it and unfortunately one of us had to lose.
Tonight and for a long time we have to get over this. It's a tough one. Tonight is devastating, there's no buttering it up. The lads are absolutely gutted. It's up to us to pick them up. What I Will say is thank you to the country. We felt everyone behind us and knew the excitement back home. Yeah, sorry for letting you down.

21:13

Update on Varga

We have an update on the condition of Hungary forward Barnabas Varga, who was stretchered off after a sickening head injury.

Hungarian outlet Magyar Nemzet say he did not lose consciousness after the incident but was put in a neck brace.

And M4 Sport say he has been taken to hospital and is able to communicate with those around him.

21:10

WATCH: Hungary win it late

Scotland fans, you might want to look away.

Look at all the Scotland players, they are all busting a gut to score a late winner, and then comes the sucker punch.

It's a brilliant breakaway and Kevin Csoboth is in the right place at the right time.

21:06

Late heartbreak for Scotland

Getting knocked out of tournament football is never nice, but that is a devastating way for it to happen.

All hands were at the pump for Scotland, they looked like they were about to strike late on.

But it just wasn't to be, instead, they leave Stuttgart devastated like so many Scotland teams before them.

This one will hurt for a long time.

FULL-TIME: Scotland 0-1 Hungary

Scotland are OUT!

Major international heartache is all they have ever known and it has happened yet again in Stuttgart.

Kevin Csoboth's last-gasp winner means that Hungary are still in the hunt for a knockout place.

But for Scotland, it's another early exit.

GOAL!!! Scotland 0-1 Hungary (Csoboth 90+10')

Heartbreak for Scotland right at the death.

Kevin Csoboth sweeps home expertly on the counter-attack and all hell breaks loose as his teammates swamp him.

It's despair for Scotland yet again, the had all their players up the other end going for the winner.

They are left open at the back and are punished.

BIG SAVE! Scotland 0-0 Hungary

Peter Gulacsi that's a massive save!

He gets across well to deny Grant Hanley inside the area, was that the moment?

I thought the net was about to ripple and then I realised who was striking it.

20:54, 96'

Scotland 0-0 Hungary

Scott McTominay will be very thankful that he has just seen the offside flag go up.

He comes so close to turning home a late winner from close range but gets it all wrong.

The flag spares his blushes.

20:53

FULL-TIME: Switzerland 1-1 Germany

And there is the full-time whistle.

Germany have salvaged a point right at the death, and they finish top of Group A on seven points.

Switzerland also confirm their spot in the next round, so they won't be too disappointed in the end.

A great watch in Frankfurt.

GOAL!!! Switzerland 1-1 Germany (Fullkrug 90+2')

Niclas Fullkrug has done it!

The substitute has saved the day for Germany, he rises highest to head home David Raum's cross.

The Waldstadion goes absolutely bonkers, they know that Germany have topped the group.

A huge, huge goal. Cometh the hour, cometh the man.

Oh my word, Hungary come so close to taking the lead.

Substitute Csoboth is in, time seems to slow down, but he then smashes an effort off the post.

Scotland live to fight another day... for now.

20:49, 91'

BIG SAVE! Scotland 0-0 Hungary

Angus Gunn is suddenly being called upon with regularity.

This time he has to get down low and deny Dominik Szoboszlai from a tight angle.

I bet Scotland fans hearts were in their mouths then.

20:48

10 ADDED MINUTES

There will be a mammoth ten minutes of added time due to the head injury to Barnabas Vargas.

Just moments before the board goes up Andras Schafer forces Angus Gunn into a strong save.

20:46, 88'

SUBSTITUTION: Scotland 0-0 Hungary

Steve Clarke has decided to hook the captain, Andy Robertson. He hobbles off, so I'm assuming it's due to injury.

Lewis Morgan comes on in his place. What a story for the New York Red Bulls man, I bet he never thought he'd get a moment like this.

20:44, 87'

Scotland 0-0 Hungary

'The Flower of Scotland' is being belted out by the Scotland faithful as they try and rally the troops.

They have three minutes plus a lengthy stoppage time to find this winning goal.

20:43, 84'

DISALLOWED GOAL!

Ruben Vargas thinks he has sealed the points, but no, the offside flag is up.

It's a brilliant finish across Manuel Neuer as he races through, but he is definitely offside.

He looks gutted.

20:42, 83'

Switzerland 1-0 Germany

It just doesn't look like it's going to happen for Germany, they are heading for defeat.

The ball keeps going into the area, and it keeps coming back out. Nothing doing for them.

20:40, 83'

Scotland 0-0 Hungary

I'm still in disbelief that Scotland were not awarded a penalty there. It's a stonewall in my eyes.

Just as I type this Peter Gulacsi nearly makes a mess of a simple collection of the ball to allow Scott Mctominay to pinch the ball.

But he does collect at the second time of asking. the whistle is then blown anyway.

20:37, 79'

PENALTY APPEAL! Scotland 0-0 Hungary

Stuart Armstrong screams for a penalty after being bundled down in the area, but the referee says no.

My first reaction was that it was a penalty under the pressure of Willy Orban, and after seeing it again my mind has not changed.

He was through, how has that not been given?

I simply can't believe it...

20:35, 76'

SUBSTITUTION: Switzerland 1-0 Germany

Well, I am surprised at this one...

Jamal Musiala is being hooked, and Leroy Sane is the man who is called upon to replace him.

Niclas Fullkrug also enters the fray, he comes on for Florian Wirtz.

20:33, 74'

SUBSTITUTION: Scotland 0-0 Hungary

Barnabas Vargas has been stretched off after a lengthy delay due to a head injury.

He has now been replaced by Martin Adam.

20:31

'Worrying scenes'

Stephen McGowan, Mail Sport, at the Stuttgart Arena:

Worrying scenes here as the screens go up during a lengthy delay to protect prostrate Hungary striker Barnabas Varga, who leaves the fray on a stretcher. Worry for Scotland as well as the big screen shows a potential penalty check by VAR.
20:30, 72'

Switzerland 1-0 Germany

Germany are really ramping up the pressure in Frankfurt. Switzerland are standing strong and are not being broken down.

Can Germany break the resistance?

20:29, 71'

Scotland 0-0 Hungary

This situation is clearly not a good one, it is really concerning.

The medical team are taking their time on this one and it's really worrying now.

We will keep you up to date when we see anything more.

20:27, 68'

Scotland 0-0 Hungary

This doesn't look good.

Barnabas Varga is down and is not moving after a challenge with Angus Gunn.

There are sheets covering the forward as the medical team rush on to help him, and now the stretcher is coming.

STUTTGART, GERMANY - JUNE 23: Medical staff arrive on the pitch for Barnabas Varga (19) of Hungary after he injured during UEFA EURO 2024 Group A football match between Scotland and Hungary at Stuttgart Arena in Stuttgart, Germany on June 23, 2024. (Photo by Gokhan Balci/Anadolu via Getty Images)

20:26, 67'

YELLOW CARD: Switzerland 1-0 Germany (Xhaka)

I'm slightly confused as to why Granit Xhaka has been booked there.

he comes across and seemingly wins the ball of Jamal Musiala cleanly, but the German goes down.

And then a free-kick is given and a yellow card shown. Odd.

20:24

'Scotland don't look like scoring'

Stephen McGowan, Mail Sport, at the Stuttgart Arena:

Not entirely sure what Steve Clarke is waiting for here. Less than half an hour to go, Scotland need a goal and don't look like scoring one. Change is surely inevitable.
20:23, 66'

Scotland 0-0 Hungary

That is brilliant from Andy Robertson.

The full-back sees his Liverpool teammate Dominik Szoboszlai about to line up a shot from distance and flies across to nab the ball from him.

If he didn't do that, who knows where that ball could have ended up. We know Szoboszlai can hit them.

20:21, 62'

SUBSTITUTION: Switzerland 1-0 Germany

Julian Nagelsmann has seen enough, he is making some changes.

Maximilian Mittelstadt and Jonathan Tah see their numbers on the board and their time is up.

David Raum and Nico Schlotterbeck replace them.

20:19, 62'

SUBSTITUTION: Scotland 0-0 Hungary

Callum Styles' evening has come to an end and he is replaced by Adama Nagy.

He can be proud of his first start in a major international tournament, he put himself about well.

20:18, 60'

Switzerland 1-0 Germany

Jamal Musiala is something else, isn't he?

His touch is something to be drooled over. The ball is up in the air and he brings it down with ease before starting an attack.

He truly is special and Germany need him in these last 30 minutes.

20:16, 59'

Scotland 0-0 Hungary

Great run from John McGinn, but he can't find a teammate in the middle.

he powers past several Hungary defenders and drives into the box before sliding the ball across the area.

It's not they best pass he has ever made, but credit to his dribbling ability.

STUTTGART, GERMANY - JUNE 23: John McGinn of Scotland controls the ball whilst under pressure from Marton Dardai of Hungary during the UEFA EURO 2024 group stage match between Scotland and Hungary at Stuttgart Arena on June 23, 2024 in Stuttgart, Germany. 20:14, 57'

Scotland 0-0 Hungary

Hungary want a penalty... NO CHANCE!

They hit Scotland on the counter, Dominik Szoboszlai driving them forward.

he slides the ball to Roland Sallai who decides to go for goal. His effort is low and hits Anthony Ralston.

However it then bounces up and hits Jack Hendry on what looks like the arm, but they are both by his side.

Never getting that.

20:13

'Lot's riding on this last 35 minutes'

Ian Ladyman, Mail Sport Football Editor, at the Waldstadion:

As it stands it could well be a last sixteen knock-out game between Germany and Italy in Berlin. That is how much is riding on this last 35 minutes or so for Germany. They only need a draw – just one goal – to get back on top of Group A.
20:11, 54'

Scotland 0-0 Hungary

Scotland have had their first effort on goal... in the 54th minute.

It comes from the boot of Che Adams, and it's fair to say, it's not an effort that will be remembered very well.

Adams receives the ball 25 yards out and lets fly, but he is leaning back and blasts miles over the bar.

20:10, 51'

CHANCE! Switzerland 1-0 Germany

Very nearly a leveller from Germany.

Jamal Musiala is in, and the alarm bells are ringing for Switzerland, but his shot is straight at Yann Sommer.

I just assumed Musiala would do better there, but he just couldn't find the corner.

That's better from Germany, though.

20:08, 51'

YELLOW CARD: Scotland 0-0 Hungary (McTominay)

Scott McTominay will not feature in the round of 16 if Scotland progress.

that's because he picks up a booking for an erratic tackle. Very, very silly from the midfielder.

A blow for the Scots.

20:07, 49'

Scotland 0-0 Hungary

We have had a shot on target, I repeat, we have had a shot on target.

It comes from Hungary, and it's a tame one. Roland Sallai decides to have a pop from distance and it is deflected through to Angus Gunn.

We will certainly take it, though.

20:04, 46'

SECOND HALF: Switzerland 1-0 Germany

The ball is rolling again in Frankfurt.

Germany were stunned before the break and they will want to put things right in the second.

they have 45 minutes to do it.

20:03, 46'

SECOND HALF: Scotland 0-0 Hungary

And we are back underway in Stuttgart.

Let's hope we get a better second half than the one we just witnessed, cause it was pants in truth.

Can Scotland get that all-important goal?

20:02

'Huge roar for Scotland'

Aadam Patel, Mail Sport, at the Stuttgart Arena:

Huge roar for Scotland as they emerge for the second half. No changes yet but it really is now or never. They desperately need to find a way to get behind the Hungary backline
20:02

'Germany have got a touch of the Englands'

Matt Barlow, Mail Sport, at the Waldstadion:

Germany have got a touch of the Englands on the same spongey Frankfurt pitch. They made a positive start, threatened goal a couple of times but have found it difficult to slick passes around on a surface. Excellent goal by Bologna Dan Ndoye who looks dangerous and might have scored another. Once behind, Germany tighter and not so natural in possession…

19:57

Young gun Ndoye

Dan Ndoye got his big moment and boy did he take it.

He is now Switzerland's second youngest goalscorer ever at the European Championship.

It was a brilliant goal too, he took it like a seasoned professional.

19:54

McGinn the wars

John McGinn has been Scotland's bright spark today, but the problem is, he has spent most of the match on the ground.

There were so many fouls in that half, including several on McGinn, who has been hacked down five times.

this game needs to flow more after the break... much more.

19:52

'Scotland need to be more aggressive'

Stephen McGowan, Mail Sport, at the Stuttgart Arena:

Hungary's Andras Schafer fortunate to escape a red card for an overball, studs raised challenge on Jack Hendry. The Magyars have shown a real physical side to their game in the first half. Laboured, one-dimensional, and lacking quality Scotland need to be a good deal more aggressive than they've been.
19:51

'Germany’s playmakers struggling'

Ian Ladyman, Mail Sport Football Editor, at the Waldstadion:

Kai Havertz has been impressive at this tournament so far but isn’t having a great night here. With Germany’s playmakers struggling to find passes between the red defensive wall, they could do with a little more physical threat from Havertz when they attack from the flanks. But as we know, it’s not really the Arsenal man’s game.
19:47

HALF-TIME: Switzerland 1-0 Germany

Well, was anybody expecting this.

Germany find themselves behind in Frankfurt thanks to Dan Ndoye's first international goal for Switzerland.

you can tell this German side are not used to being behind, all their potency faded away after conceding.

They really need this break now. Can they come back firing after it?

19:47

HALF-TIME: Scotland 0-0 Hungary

Dominik Szoboszlai has half a chance to give Hungary the lead from distance, but he blasts it miles over.,

And there goes the whistle for half-time.

That wasn't the highest quality of football I have ever seen, far from it in truth.

Both sides have struggled to really get going in this one, but Hungary have still fashioned some chances.

Willy Orban had the bets of them, and he should have scored, but it may have been offside anyway.

There is still plenty to play for in this one.

19:46, 45'

YELLOW CARD: Scotland 0-0 Hungary (Schafer)

Now that is a nasty challenge.

Andras Schafer is set to race through on goal, but Jack Hendry produces a fabulous tackle to knick the ball from him.

As he gets his leg to the ball, Schafer accidentally stamps on the defender, and he gets a yellow card for his troubles.

19:44, 43'

Switzerland 1-0 Germany

Germany have not recovered since the goal, they still seem shocked.

If anything, it's now Switzerland e enjoying the ball much more, which they weren't whatsoever before taking the lead.

It's eerily quiet in the stadium, too.

19:43, 41'

BIG CHANCE! Scotland 0-0 Hungary

Willy Orban, you have to score that!

Dominik Szoboszlai swings in a delightful free-kick into the back post for Orban to attack, he looks set to nod him.

But he can't keep his effort on target, and I really don't know how. It looks like a piece of cake.

Will Hungary rue that missed chance?

19:41, 40'

Scotland 0-0 Hungary

Now that's what you classify as a high boot.

Che Adams nearly takes the head off Barnabas Vargas and Hungary have a free-kick just outside the area.

In all fairness to Adams, he didn't actually touch him, but it was still dangerous.

19:40, 39'

YELLOW CARD: Switzerland 1-0 Germany (Tah)

Jonathan Tah, you silly, silly boy...

The Germany defender will not play part in their round of 16 tie as he has just been booked for a second time in the group stage.

It's a stupid challenge too, he sort of karate kicks Breel Embolo in the air, and goes so high he ends up on his shoulders.

Tah should be a gymnast with spring like that.

19:38

'Real cup final feel about this'

Aadam Patel, Mail Sport, at the Stuttgart Arena:

Real cup final feel about this one. Both sides are looking solid defensively but are reluctant to commit bodies forward just yet.
19:35, 35'

Scotland 0-0 Hungary

Hungary really are starting to gain some momentum here.

They are having all the ball, and Dominik Szoboszlai is just starting to get involved more.

Roland Sallai decides to have a pop from distance, but it's miles over the top.

Can't blame him for having a go, though.

19:34

'Big test now for the hosts'

Ian Ladyman, Mail Sport Football Editor, at the Waldstadion:

Switzerland have scored with almost their first attack. I thought Dan Ndoye looked marginally offside as he volleyed in a cross from the left but obviously not. Big test now for the hosts. If it stays like this they finished second…
19:33, 32'

Scotland 0-0 Hungary

Scotland fans scream 'wayyy' and Dominik Szoboszlai slams a free-kick into the wall.

For just a fraction of a second, it looked like it might dip over, but of course, it didn't.

Hungary are starting to cause some problems.

Scotland's midfielder #04 Scott McTominay (2L), Scotland's defender #13 Jack Hendry (C-UP) and Scotland's defender #26 Scott McKenna (C-R) deflect a free kick shot by Hungary's midfielder #10 Dominik Szoboszlai (2R) during the UEFA Euro 2024 Group A football match between Scotland and Hungary at the Stuttgart Arena in Stuttgart on June 23, 2024. 19:31, 31'

CLOSE! Switzerland 1-0 Germany

Oh my word, Dan Ndoye nearly has another.

The ball is fired up to him on the edge of the area and he flashes the ball across goal and just the wrong side of the post.

It really is so, so close.

Ndoye is having a field day right now.

19:28, 28'

GOAL!!! Switzerland 1-0 Germany (Ndoye 28')

Well, well, well...

Switzerland take a shock lead in Frankfurt and it's Dan Ndoye who has given them it.

He turns in from close range to divert Remo Freuler's cross into the back of the net for his first international goal.

The host nation are stunned.

19:27, 27'

YELLOW CARD: Scotland 0-0 Hungary (Orban)

This game has just been 27 minutes of fouls so far.

Willy Orban now goes into the book, and he can't argue with that one.

The resulting free-kick from Billy Gilmour is poor, and once again Hungary hook the ball clear.

19:26, 26'

YELLOW CARD: Switzerland 0-0 Germany

Now that is a harsh booking.

Dan Ndoye is shown a yellow card for a coming together with Antonio Rudiger, and that's really all it was.

He looks shocked, and to be honest, so am I...

19:22

'Clear foul by Jamal Musiala'

Ian Ladyman, Mail Sport Football Editor, at the Waldstadion:

Clear foul by Jamal Musiala on Michel Aebischer before Germany scored that goal. Could see it immediately from the press box. Good and speedy use of VAR by the officials and we stay at 0-0.
19:21, 19'

YELLOW CARD: Scotland 0-0 Hungary (Styles)

Now that is a naughty challenge, Callum Styles...

He flies through John McGinn, it's really poor, and he gets a yellow card for it.

The Scotland players show their discontent, they are not happy at all.

19:19, 18'

VAR: NO GOAL!

It's been ruled out...

Jamal Musiala is penalised for a foul in the build-up, and there is no arguing with that.

We are back level again.

19:17

'Not much quality on the pitch'

Aadam Patel, Mail Sport, at the Stuttgart Arena:

We've already had a couple more renditions of Flower of Scotland from the fans. It's quality but there's not much quality on the pitch in the opening phases here. Scotland enjoying possession and Hungary happy to sit back for now. Remember, Hungary need a win too.
19:16, 17'

GOAL!!! Switzerland 0-1 Germany (Andrich 17')

What a strike that is from Robert Andrich!

Questions will be asked of Yann Sommer, but Andrich has just found the back of the net from 30 yards out.

The ball falls invitingly for him and he lets fly. It dips in front of Sommer and bounces over him.

But wait, VAR is checking...

19:16, 15'

Scotland 0-0 Hungary

The best bit about this game so far is the national anthems before it started. Yes, that's how little has happened.

The Scotland fans decide they want to sing 'Flower of Scotland' yet again, and as always, it's done superbly.

Maybe it will get the team going a little.

19:13, 12'

Switzerland 0-0 Germany

Kai Havertz is screaming for a penalty, but he doesn't get one.

In fact, it's a brilliant tackle from Ricardo Rodrigues to deny him a shot on goal, and then Fabian Schar bundles him over.

Was never going to be given. Good defending.

19:12

'Don't think anyone expected a Hungary low block '

Stephen McGowan, Mail Sport, at the Stuttgart Arena:

Don't think anyone expected Hungary to set up with a low block and sit off, playing on the break. Looks like they watched Scotland struggle to break down opponents in their warm-up games.
19:11, 11'

Switzerland 0-0 Germany

Unsurprisingly it's Germany dominating proceedings, but they have yet to cause Switzerland too much trouble.

I feel this will be the pattern of the match. The Swiss sitting back and Germany trying to break them down.

19:09, 8'

Scotland 0-0 Hungary

I think I may have spoke too soon?

Bendeguz Bolla lets fly on the counter-attack, and it seems like a nothing shot from distance.

But Angus Gunn doesn't deal with it very well, it bobbles in front of him and he can't collect it cleanly.

Andy Robertson spares his blushes and gets the ball away.

19:07, 7'

Scotland 0-0 Hungary

Ooof, that's a hefty challenge.

Scott McTominay is left in a heap by Endre Botka, but to be fair, he doesn't complain.

Andy Robertson delivers the resulting set-piece but it comes to nothing. Not the best game so far.

19:04, 4'

Scotland 0-0 Hungary

You can barely hear yourself think in Stuttgart.

The atmosphere is deafening, but the football has yet to live up to its standards.

Scotland can be happy with how things have gone, so far, they are enjoying their fair share of the ball.

19:03, 2'

Switzerland 0-0 Germany

Germany are already on the front foot.

Jamal Musiala shows why he is one of the best talents in the world, bringing out his usual tricks.

The ball is clipped over the top to Ilkay Gundogan, but he can't quite turn the ball home.

19:01, 1'

KICK-OFF: Switzerland 0-0 Germany

Germany get the ball rolling in Frankfurt.

Remember, this game still has its permutations, and the atmosphere is magnificent.

Which team will top Group A?

19:00, 1'

KICK-OFF: Scotland 0-0 Hungary

The waiting is over, this huge match is underway.

There is a monster roar as the ball is rolling and it’s Hungary that get us underway.

Can Scotland do it?

18:58

Scotland pumped up

Honestly, after listening to that anthem I am so pumped up. Get me on that pitch!

I'm not the only one, the Scottish players look amped up for this one, especially Andy Robertson.

They know what it means.

18:56

Flower of Scotland belted out

My word, that may even be better than the rendition against Switzerland.

Every time I hear the Scottish national anthem, I get shivers and the hair stands up on the back of my neck.

The passion is admirable, and once again the fans in Stuttgart belt it out to the top of their lungs.

It's incredible, there is nothing quite like it.

18:54

Nearly there...

Right, we are nearly ready.

Before proceedings get underway, I just had to include these two photos.

Style icons, that's all I have to say.

Kick-off closing in

We are edging closer, and closer, to proceedings getting underway in Stuttgart, and I will tell you now, I am buzzing.

Scotland have gone through their final preparations, so have Hungary, and now the final team talks are taking place.

I wonder what Steve Clarke is saying to them right this second... Probably something passionate, and motivating.

I wish there was a fly on the wall.

18:42

Dominik Szoboszlai - Hungary's star

The Scotland players will certainly be wary of this man.

Dominik Szoboszlai is an extremely talented midfielder on his day, he just hasn't been on it so far this tournament.

That doesn't mean the Liverpool star won't find his form today. As captain at just 23 years of age, he needs to lead from the front and set an example.

Keep an eye out for him, he could cause Scotland all sorts of problems.

Steve Clarke: 'We know what the stakes are'

Steve Clarke, Scotland boss, speaking on BBC One:

The starting 11 never picks itself. You’ve got to consider all the options. I just feel this is the best way to start, maybe it’s not the way we finish.
You've got to have the capacity to go out and express yourself in a high-pressure game. You know what the stakes are. You know you have to win. You have to win with caution.

On if a draw is enough:

No, because it won't be enough. We want to win. We want to get four points and we'll see if that’s enough. We prepare almost the same way every game. If they sounded relaxed that's great because you have to be relaxed but you also have to understand what your job is.
18:35

'Germany get a good rest if they do win'

Ian Ladyman, Mail Sport Football Editor, at the Waldstadion:

Much as Germany want to win this game and top the group, it’s interesting to see that they have four players in the team on a booking.
Rudiger, Tah, Mittelstadt and Andrich are all one yellow card away from suspension. Germany get a good rest if they do win their section by the way. They won’t play again until next Saturday!!
18:34

Scots making themselves heard

No signs of nerves amongst this lot!

Deep down they are probably bricking it, but on the surface, it seems they are having a cracking time.

The Scots are in fine voice. The stands are full to the brim and chants are being screamed at the top of their lungs.

It's how it should be!

POLL: Will Scotland progress to the knockouts?

I bet the nerves are jangling inside every Scot, right now.

It's a massive night for them, their side, and their country. Win, and history will be on their doorstep.

Can they beat Hungary tonight, and will they qualify for the knockout stages?

Vote below...

18:27

More Musiala magic tonight?

Jamal Musiala has been sensational at Euro 2024, so far.

He has been the pick of the players, in my opinion, the best in the tournament so far.

he has netted against both Scotland and Hungary, but it's been his dazzling skills that have really caught the eye.

Nobody has been able to get near him, he's become the beating heart of this German side.

Will he impress again tonight?

'What a season Granit Xhaka has had'

Ian Ladyman, Mail Sport Football Editor, at the Waldstadion:

Swiss fans in fine voice

It really is a sea of red in Frankfurt.

Considering they are facing the hosts, you'd think all the noise would be coming from the Germans.

But the Switzerland supporters are giving them a run for their money. Yet again, another cracking atmosphere.

There have been so many of them this tournament.

John McGinn: 'The boys are calm and ready to go'

John McGinn, Scotland midfielder, speaking to BBC One:

We try to prepare the same way we do for every game. It’s not every game you have thousands of Scotland supporters outside your hotel. The afternoon nap was cancelled. The excitement and anticipation was growing but the boys are calm and ready to go.  We're ready for that pressure.
The manager is a man of few words but when he speaks it's brilliant. He did a really good team talk in the hotel. The fans have waited so many years for this opportunity. We've given them this is experience but we want to give them more.
18:17

Atmosphere building in Stuttgart

The Stuttgart Arena is filling up and the vibes are immaculate.

We all know the Scotland fans are noisy, but my word, so are the Hungarians.

The stands are full of Hungarians hoping to see their side pull something out of the hat.

They are making a racket (in a good way).

'Steve Clarke sticks by the same formation'

Stephen McGowan, Mail Sport, at the Stuttgart Arena:

Five at the back was a tactic implemented by Alex McLeish to shoehorn left-backs Andrew Robertson and Kieran Tierney into the same team.
Despite Tierney's absence Steve Clarke sticks by the same formation, bringing in Scott McKenna in as a straight replacement. The worry for Scotland: when Tierney comes out, history shows that three central defenders rarely works.
18:10

'Martin Compston a bag of nerves'

Aadam Patel, Mail Sport, at the Stuttgart Arena:

Just seen Martin Compston, who you may remember from Line of Duty, in his Scotland shirt and sunglasses. He's quietly confident of a Scottish win tonight but is a bag of nerves, just like the rest of the Tartan Army here in Stuttgart.
18:06

Big night for McKenna

So Scott McKenna is the man.

It's a huge night for the centre-back who comes in to replace the injured Kieran Tierney.

He is a very different defender to Tierney, but he is very solid at the back.

And up top too, look what he did against Germany...

Scotland and Hungary TEAM NEWS

Just the one change for Scotland, and it's enforced.

Kieran Tierney misses out after being stretchered off against Switzerland, he is replaced by Scott McKenna.

Hungary make just the two changes, with one of them being Barnsley's Callum Styles.

It's a big day for the England-born man.

17:56

Switzerland and Germany TEAM NEWS

There is just one change across the two teams...

And it comes from Switzerland. Surprisingly Xherdan Shaqiri has been dropped after scoring a screamer against Scotland.

Breel Embolo replaces him in what looks to be a slightly different formation, as you'd expect Embolo to play up top.

Meanwhile, Germany are unchanged for a third game running. No taking the foot off the pedal.

17:53

Julian Nagelsmann: ‘I hope the pitch holds up but I have little hope’

Julian Nagelsmann, Germany boss, speaking about the pitch on Saturday:

I hope that it holds up, but I have little hope. The grass is simply not good — very greasy, very soft. It is like driving with summer tyres in the winter. After the NFL games (at the stadium), the grass no longer grew well. I am not so worried in terms of playing the game, but what worries me more is in terms of injuries.
There are players such as Jude Bellingham that we have seen have had problems and risked some serious injury. If you slip, you really risk getting injured. But this is the situation, these are the starting conditions. We must handle them.

17:51

How is the Frankfurt pitch?

Speaking of the turf, I hope it's in better knick today because put it this way, it was pretty rubbish the last time it was used.

When was that you ask? When England drew with Denmark on Thursday (sorry to remind you).

From the very first minute, the Frankfurt pitch was cutting up, chunks of grass were flying out of the ground, and players were falling over.

Will that happen today, I guess we will have to wait and see?

It makes for good comedy, but the teams won’t be laughing if injuries occur.

Germany checking out the Frankfurt turf

First of all, how cool are Germany's jackets?

I mean, tracksuits in football are rarely fashionable these days, but the same cannot be said about this one.

Anyway, the Germans have arrived at the Waldstadion to face Switzerland and they seem in high spirits.

They can just enjoy themselves today.

Chris Sutton: ‘Hungary will beat Scotland’

Chris Sutton, It’s All Kicking Off! Co-host, on the BBC Sport website:

Hungary have lost both their games so far but they will still feel they have an outside chance of going through if they win. Scotland were much better against Switzerland, and goalkeeper Angus Gunn played really well, but I am still worried about their defence.
I am hoping that Scotland get a result, but I actually think that Hungary will beat them. Sorry, Scotland, because I really want you to win. You’ve had the best fans at the tournament but I just think you lack quality in certain areas.
17:44

Scotland arrive in Stuttgart

Now it's time to get excited!

Scotland's players have arrived at the Stuttgart Arena and are scouting out the turf.

I mean, they are all looking very serious, and game faces are well and truly on.

They know just how huge tonight is, you can see it in their eyes.

'Back at the scene of the crime'

Ian Ladyman, Mail Sport Football Editor, at the Waldstadion:

Well, it feels strange to be back at the scene of the crime. It was only three nights ago that England drew here in Frankfurt against Denmark
This time it’s the hosts Germany and I am excited. Can’t make a prediction until I see the German team though Will it be full strength on this strange, soft, and frankly quite dangerous pitch?
17:38

Three in a row for Germany?

It’s fair to say, Germany have been balling out this tournament.

They have scored seven goals already, only conceded one, and have qualified for the knockouts after winning their first two games.

If they beat Switzerland tonight, they will become the first host national to win all three group matches since the Netherlands in 2000.

I would back them to do so as well.

'Scotland have vowed to win for Tierney'

Stephen McGowan, Mail Sport, at the Stuttgart Arena:

The Scotland dressing room in the Stuttgart Arena has Kieran Tierney’s jersey hanging from a peg despite the Arsenal defender’s tournament being over. Stretchered off from the 1-1 draw against Switzerland, Scotland players have vowed to win it for KT. Let’s see if they can walk the walk.

Robbo vs Szobo

Two Liverpool teammates are set to collide tonight.

Both Andy Robertson and Dominik Szoboszlai are used to linking up in red in search of three points.

Tonight they will have to put their friendship behind them, they are battling against each other on this occasion.

Both will captain their countries in Stuttgart, so it will be interesting to see how much they chat alongside each other in the tunnel beforehand.

I’m guessing not much, game faces will be on.

Steve Clarke: ‘We know we have to win’

Steve Clarke, Scotland boss, speaking on Saturday:

The whole tournament is a sense of occasion. For Scotland, the first major overseas tournament since 1998. I was still playing then, that was a long time ago. You can see how much the supporters out here are enjoying themselves. I am sure the five million at home are also engrossed in the tournament. It’s not just about this game, it’s about all the games.
We know we have to win the game to progress to the next round and that’s what we’ll try to do. We’ve been in this position before but hopefully we can show that we’ve learned a few lessons. We had a really good training session and when they cross the white line they have to put that into practice and hopefully you see the results at the end.

How can Scotland progress?

Let’s be honest, they just need to win.

If they draw, it is still technically plausible, but extremely unlikely. They would need lots of other results to go their way.

Scotland can’t let too much come down to chance. Win tonight and they will practically be through. Four points is usually enough for qualification as a third-placed side.

They can technically still finish second, but it would require Switzerland to lose to Germany and a six-goal swing.

So, a squeaky 1-0 will surely do, right?

At the moment they sit bottom of the third-placed team rankings. The top four will qualify, so that is the big aim for the Scots.

It’s certainly achievable.

Scottish takeover Stuttgart

Not to be outdone by the Germans, the Tartan Army are also enjoying themselves.

Thousands, and thousands of Scotland fans have travelled to Stuttgart for tonight's crunch match, and it looks like they are enjoying themselves.

The Scottish have arguably been the best supporters this tournament, their back of the team has been unmatched.

Just look at the sea of blue, it's a sight to behold.

Germany fans in party mode

Now this looks like a right laugh, doesn't it?

It's not surprising that the German party has already started ahead of their clash with Switzerland, I mean, they are already through.

I have seen so many videos circulating of this Saxophonist getting the vibe going in Frankfurt, and I must say, it makes me want to join in.

Just look at the atmosphere, it's incredible.

Top two face off in Frankfurt

There is not as much on this game, but don’t let that fool you, it’s still set up to be a belter.

Both Germany and Switzerland have been playing some sublime stuff in recent times, both before and during the tournament.

The hosts have to be the favourites for this game, I mean, they have been in scintillating form so far this tournament.

In fact, they have my backing to go on and win the whole thing. Yep, that’s how good I think they are.

But Switzerland will give them a game, that’s for sure.

John McGinn: ‘We can write our name into the history books’

John McGinn, Scotland midfielder, speaking on Saturday:

We've obviously had a lot of injuries along the way - but us Scots are best at enduring adversity. Hopefully we can prove a lot of people wrong. We have players who've been involved in high-pressure matches, but we're not feeling pressure, we feel anticipation about being that team who changes things for Scottish football.
I don't think a lot of people across Europe thought we could do it, so we want to be the ones who do. We all know the magnitude of the occasion. We have the chance to write our name into the history books.

Scotland seeking history

Scotland have the chance to create history tonight.

No Scottish side has ever gotten out of the group stage of an international major tournament. Even the great 1978 side with Graeme Souness and Kenny Dalglish.

Well, Steve Clarke’s side can change that today. They take on a Hungary side yet to claim a point at these Championships.

If they win, it’s more than likely they will sail into the knockout stages on four points as one of the top four third-place sides.

Hungary are no slouch, though, led by Dominik Szoboszlai they were seen as a dark horse before the tournament, but it’s not gone as planned.

The confidence in the Scotland camp is high that they can get the job done under pressure.

The stakes are high – this one will be a cracker!

As it stands

It’s a huge day for Group A, so how is it looking?

Well, we know Germany are already through, while Switzerland are in a very strong position to qualify in second on four points.

It’s third place where it’s all really happening. Scotland and Hungary are both vying for that spot in a bid to progress to the knockouts.

Yes, third doesn’t mean a team definitely go through, but it gives you a shot.

17:00

Group A Deciding Day

How are the nerves, Scotland fans?

It’s a monumental day for the Tartan Army as they look to make history by securing qualification to the knockout stages.

They face Hungary in Stuttgart, and the excitement for this one is through the roof. I’m nervous and I’m not even Scottish. The footballing world will be tuning in.

Hosts Germany – who have already qualified – are looking to finish the group stage in style against Switzerland in Frankfurt.

The Swiss are all but through, so this fixture doesn’t quite have the same weight of expectation upon it.

Both matches start at 8pm and we will have you covered for both. I simply cannot wait to get going on this one.

Let’s get this show on the road!
