Turkey 0-3 Portugal - Euro 2024 RECAP: Cristiano Ronaldo and Co qualify for last 16 in a crazy contest

Job done in the group stages for Portugal.

Roberto Martinez's men progressed to the knockout stages in style by shipping three past a sorry Turkey side.

In truth, they rarely had to get out of second gear, Turkey gifted them two of the three goals, including a calamitous own goal.

It means Turkey still have a lot of work to do if they are to get out of the group, they have to avoid defeat to Czechia.

Anyway, we are heading over to Cologne now for Belgium's face-off with Romania. I will be there, will you?

I thought it was a lot more pragmatic selection from the start for Turkey. Leaving Arda Guler and Kenan Yildiz out, you can maybe understand why as this was up a level. We know Portugal's qualities, but this was a way to measure Turkey and they were found out.

Portugal's bench is so strong and this is perfect for Roberto Martinez as he can rest players in the final group game. Before the game, I thought it would be more of a contest.

They just keep tumbling...

Maybe we should have expected that pass from Cristiano Ronaldo, I mean, he has the most assists in the competition's history.

What can't this man do?

You can smile properly, Bernardo!

The Manchester City man has been awarded the Man of the Match award, just beating out Pepe.

I thought the Veteran defender deserved the award for his solid display at the back, but Bernardo was very good too.

It was more poor defending by Turkey, they gifted Portugal two of their three goals.

But still take nothing away from Cristiano Ronaldo here, you just thought he would shoot.

Teamwork makes the dream work.

No one thinks he doesn't, but it's nice for him to show it on the international stage.

It's rare you see Cristiano Ronaldo giving up goalscoring opportunities, but he did today to allow Bruno Fernandes to score a tap-in.

It means he is now the oldest player to ever provide an assist at the European Championship.

Not bad for a veteran (only joking).

I was once crucified by a person in their late 30s for calling a 39-year-old a veteran of the game, although I still believe they are.

That looked like a piece of cake, didn't it?

Portugal barely got out of second gear, they truly were in cruise control in Dortmund.

Despite this, they were still superb, slotting three past a stellar Turkey side who have high hopes in this tournament.

That performance could be ominous for other teams, Portugal really do look like they mean business.

Their first job is done, they are in the knockout stages.

Two wins from two for Portugal.

Roberto Martinez's men are through to the round of 16 thanks to an emphatic display in Dortmund.

Turkey couldn't cope with Portugal from the word go, and in truth, the scoreline flatters them.

It's a real message from the Portuguese that they mean business in this tournament. A brilliant performance.

Meanwhile, Turkey still have work to do if they want to get out of this group, they will need to get over this result very quickly.

A very one-sided evening at Signal Iduna Park.

A fourth fan has now got on to the pitch, this is getting simply ridiculous.

These players need protecting, it just needs one of these fans to do something stupid for it to become a huge issue.

Turkey just have to endure this torture for five more minutes.

I bet they can't wait for this one to end, it's been a rubbish day for them.

Portugal could have had six goals tonight if they were clinical.

Bernardo Silva himself could have had a hat-trick. He goes for goal again but his low-driven strike is blocked.

It's a big block as it was heading for the bottom corner, but Cristiano Ronaldo is still annoyed - he wanted the ball.

Vitinha's afternoon is over, and it's been another impressive one from the PSG man.

Benfica's superstar youngster, Joao Neves, is on in his place. I can tell you, this lad is no joke.

he only has a few minutes to show what he has got, though.

Altay Bayındır smothers Bernardo Silva to stop a fourth goal - very good goalkeeping.

Turkey need to watch their goal difference, so interventions like that could prove pivotal.

Portugal will be desperate to keep a clean sheet, and NBuno Mendes has just ensured it's still intact.

Arda Guler fires a stinging cross in the area for Celik to attack, but Mendes gets his head there first to clear.

What a display the 41-year-old has just provided, quality never does fade, does it?

He is replaced by Antonio Silva.

Yusuf Yazici goes down under the challenge of Ruben Dias and throws his arms up in the air.

But as Ange Postecoglou would say: 'You're not getting that mate'.

His protests very quickly fade.

The Portugal fans in the stands just adore Pepe.

He makes two headed clearances and they celebrate them both like a goal, it's rather funny.

What a defender, and what a guy.

This match was over 20 minutes ago, and you can just tell.

Neither side are really putting in a shift now, I bet Turkey just want this nightmare to end.

They have to deal with just over 10 more minutes.

Samet Akaydin looks like he is in some pain.

The centre-back has had a tough day at the office, and it has now come to an end.

He leaves the pitch with two medical staff members helping him while clutching his ribs and grimacing.

Merih Demiral manages to get onto the pitch to replace him after a rush to get ready.

That passage of play sums up Turkey's day.

Yilmaz tries to bring out the tricks and gives the ball away and then moments later they give away a free-kick.

It's just not been their day whatsoever.

Another big cheer as Arda Guler enters proceedings.

How different would this game have been if he started from minute one?

Nelson Semedo is also on, for Portugal, replacing Joao Cancelo.

The Turkey fans go wild as a child invades the pitch.

He sprints over to Cristiano Ronaldo, gets a selfie, and then evades all the stewards and goes back into the stands.

Ronaldo gives a huge smile, he's impressed!

The stewards... not so much.

Well, well, well... that was strange.

Bernardo Silva dinks a cross over to Cristiano Ronaldo and you're thinking it's a goal.

But he completely misjudged the flight of the ball, jumps too early, and his header doesn't even go toward goal.

Very unlike him.

Turkey look drained, they really do.

Kenan Yıldız has no options around his so has a pop from distance that goes miles over the bar.

This game is well and truly done.

Turkey fans have been making more noise by far today, but that third goal has brought Portugal to the party.

The Portuguese fans sound like they are having a whale of a time now, I mean, their team has been impressive today.

So, why not enjoy, right?

I can't lie, I'm more stunned at the fact Cristiano Ronaldo passed that than Turkey's abject defending.

Fair play, Ronaldo truly is a changed man, and you have to respect it.

As easy as you like...

It's a calamity at the back again from Turkey. Abdulkerim Bardakcı can't block a long ball over the top and Cristiano Ronaldo is away.

You expect him to go for goal, but he shows his maturity and slides it across for Bruno Fernandes, who then taps into an empty net.

Games. Set. Match.

Yusuf Yazici is already trying to make a difference.

He picks up the ball from 30 yards out and has no options around him, so he just decides to have a go.

It's a tame strike that Diogo Costa collects, but it's better than Turkey had been providing.

Ooh, Turkey did well in getting rid of the ball there.

Pedro Neto plays the ball back for Bruno Fernandes who is set to pull the trigger and make it 3-0.

But there is a Turkey boot there to get the ball away, and it's Samet Akaydin's.

Bruno Fernandes looked like he was running through mud there.

Portugal try to hit Turkey on the counter and the ball is played through to Fernandes, but my word was he running slow.

Hakan Calhanoglu glides past him and collects the ball...

Roberto Martinez is taking no chances in this second half.

Both Rafael Leao and Joao Palhinha, who were booked in the first half, have been hooked.

Pedro Neto and Ruben Neves are on in their place. Turkey also make a change, Yusuf Yazici replaces Orkun Kokcu.

Anyway, the ball is rolling again.

Six own goals, really?

It's own goal galore at the European Championship, this year, following the trend from Euro 2020.

Samet Akaydin's from the first half was the sixth own goal of the tournament already, and surely the worst.

I still can't believe this happened.

I was just about to start typing about Cristiano Ronaldo's tantrum, then I looked up and the ball was in the net.

It's just such poor defending from Turkey, there is no communication there whatsoever.

It will bring you a good laugh, though...

It was boos galore at half-time, directed mainly towards the German referee Felix Zwayer. He's booked five players in the half but let's be honest - Turkey only have themselves to blame.

Now this statistic has surprised me, I can't lie.

Bernardo Silva opened the scoring in style, and it just looked like another goal in his glittering career.

Well, it was actually very special for him. It's the first time he has ever scored at an international major tournament.

I know, shocking right?

Portugal are a great watch. Bernardo Silva is playing like a man possessed. Nuno Mendes is some talent. Two goals up though Cristiano Ronaldo keeps sulking. Rafael Leao is class but loves a dive. And a word for 41-year-old Pepe, who is putting on a defensive clinic

The half-time whistle is greeted by boos from Signal Iduna Park.

Turkey fans are not enjoying this refereeing performance, they believe Portugal are getting everything.

I mean, they aren't losing because of the referee, this is all their own doing. They have been poor and Portugal have punished them.

Samet Akaydin's own goal for the second seems to have knocked their confidence for six.

I can only see the second half continuing in the same vein.

It's yellow cards galore...

Now Joao Palhinha gets his name in the book - not really a surprise.

He prevents a promising counter-attack from Turkey, so he won't really care.

Samet Akaydin is not having his best day at the office.

First an own goal, and now he has been booked for flying in on Rafael Leao.

I must admit, a yellow card seems harsh, I think he actually got the ball. Turkey are incensed and I can see why.

Oh Rafael Leao, that's so, so poor.

He dived against Czechia, and he has just done so again, but this one is even worse.

He gets booked for it, and in turn, will miss the last group match.

That's a little bit better from Turkey.

They have really struggled since conceding the first, but Muhammed Akturkoglu tries to make things happen on the left.

He skips past one challenge and looks for men in the middle, but his cross picks out Pepe.

Now Cristiano Ronaldo is at it, but he fires the ball straight into the hands of Altay Bayındır in goal.

You just know he is desperate to score, he always is. Today is a great opportunity for him to do so.

Turkey are all over the place.

Portugal are all over Turkey like a rash.

Now Bruno Fernandes has a chance to make it three, but in a similar fashion to Marcus Thuram for France against the Netherlands, he blasts over.

I fear for Turkey here, this could be any number...

Catastrophe for Turkey. That's the only way to describe it. The Turkish players were all looking at each other in shock. And all of a sudden, it looks a long way back for Vincenzo Montella's side.

Only moments before the ball crossed the line, Cristiano Ronaldo was throwing a tantrum that a pass through to him was overhit.

It ended up being the pass that led to the goal. Anger soon turned to jubilation.

I still can't get over how bizarre that was.

What an earth has just happened???

That is one of the oddest own goals I think I have ever seen...

Samet Akaydin plays a no-look back pass to Altay Bayındır in goal, but it's too far to the right of the keeper and rolls into the net.

I can't believe my eyes, it really is a comedy of errors at the back. A total calamity.

A gift for Portugal.

The goal really has come at a perfect time for Portugal.

At one end they needed Pepe to save them from a sticky situation, and then at the other end just moments later, Bernardo Silva put them a goal to the good.

On Tuesday they really had to scrap for the three points, today you feel it could be a bit more plain sailing.

Superb from Nuno Mendes. It's a great run and he gets a slice of luck with the ball across goal but that is a lethal finish from Bernardo Silva. The kind we've seen him do so often at Manchester City. And finally, you can hear the Portuguese fans who have a deserved lead.

What a lovely goal it is too. Nuno Mendes does brilliantly on the left-hand side before sliding the ball into the middle of the area.

It takes a deflection and lands in the path of Bernardo Silva who sweeps home with aplomb.

Just what Portugal needed.

WOW! Are we sure Pepe is 41?

Turkey suddenly unleashes a threatening counter-attack and the ball is slid into the path of Yilmaz.

He is surely through, right? No, Pepe races across and slides in to take the ball from him.

Brilliant defending!

Portugal are really getting a stranglehold on this match now.

Just like against Czechia, they are stroking the ball around and making Turkey run.

They aren't opening them up too often, though, and that was the problem on Tuesday too.

Rafael Leao seems to be a target for crosses, that's for sure.

After initially losing the ball on the right, Cristiano Ronaldo gets a second bite of the cherry to cross into the box.

He looks up, spots Leao at the back post, and floats the ball onto his head, but the winger can't get a decent connection on the ball.

One of these headers will come off, surely?

Vitinha chips in a delightful cross to Rafael Leao which deserves better than it gets.

Leao does manage to get his head to it, but it's more of a cross-box header than an effort on goal, and Turkey clear.

Vitinha really impressed me against Czechia, and he looks up for it again today.

They really are deafening, Aadam is right.

And they get louder as Rafael Leao brings down the ball in a beautiful fashion on the right-hand side, but the move comes to nothing.

Leao really is some player, and that touch was exquisite. No, I am not overreacting, it was delicious.

The jeers whenever Portugal get the ball are deafening. They have a big bulk of support behind the Turkish goal who are doing their best to make themselves heard but they are simply outnumbered by Turkish fans.

Muhammed Akturkoglu, how have you not scored?

It's plain and simple, Turkey should be one goal to the good, but Akturkoglu cannot turn home from inside the six-yard box.

His only excuse is that the ball is fizzed at him with some pace, and he breaks his back to reach it, but he should score.

A huge, huge opportunity not taken.

After early Portugal pressure, Turkey have had enough.

Akgun bursts down the right-hand side and drills a cross for Akturkoglu who is lurking in the centre.

But he can't get a strong connection to the cross...

Dortmund or Istanbul? The Yellow Wall is now a Red Wall. This is incredible. It genuinely is a home game for Turkey. What a noise. What an occasion.

Portugal are going to have to put up with a lot of booing from the Turkey fans, it must feel like an away game.

The supporters are straight on them, but they don't seem fazed. The ball is worked over to Bernardo Silva who slides through Cristiano Ronaldo.

However, the legendary striker doesn't get hold of his strike very well and Bayindir collects.

Portugal get us underway at the vibrant Signal Iduna Park.

Turkey fans want to make their presence heard straight away and I am truly in awe. It's incredible.

And now the red wall can greet the two teams.

The noise has just gone up a level as both Turkey and Portugal step onto the turf and into the sun.

Now it's time for the national anthems, but Turkey are going to have to wait, as Portugal go first.

I mean, fair play, the Portugal fans have found their voice and the anthem is sung beautifully by all inside the stadium.

But my word, Turkey's nearly blows the roof off this place, well, if it had one...

We are accustomed to seeing 'The Yellow Wall'...

Well, today, it's 'The Red Wall'. Turkey have well, and truly, taken over Signal Iduna Park once again.

The atmosphere is vibrant, flags are being waved and noise is being made. It's a sight to behold.

895 goals for club and country, it's not right that, honestly, his [Cristiano Ronaldo] professionalism, he is a phenomenon, and he is one of the greatest we will ever see. 895 goals is bordering on illegal.

He is one of the very first players I remember, he wanted to be one of the best players in the world. What he has done is off the scale.

Not many sides can say they have managed to keep Cristiano Ronaldo out, but Turkey can.

Despite featuring in three games against Turkey, Ronaldo is still yet to net against them. Surely, that must irk him.

He has the chance to change it today, and after failing to score against Bosnia, he will be desperate to do so today.

It's time to go through the motions.

The Portugal players are out on the pitch doing their final preparations, I'm not sure a 'warm-up' is necessary, it's boiling in there.

This is not the first time these two teams have met at the European Championship, not by a long stretch.

In fact, it's the fourth time Turkey and Portugal have met at this tournament, the last coming in 2008.

The Portuguese have won all three encounters, scoring five goals while conceding none.

Can Turkey change that record today?

This is a huge match in Group F.

After Georgia and Czechia played out a draw earlier, the importance of this one has just flicked up a notch.

Both Turkey and Portugal know that if they get three points, the group stage job is done, and they will secure their qualification for the knockout stages.

A draw would all but see them both qualify too, they just simply can't lose.

The Turkish sure know how to travel as one.

Four days ago they took over Dortmund in support of their side, they truly made Signal Iduna Park their own.

The noise was deafening in that 3-1 win over Georgia, and it feels that way yet again.

Just like Tuesday, the Turkey faithful are in fine voice.

Just the one change from Portugal boss Roberto Martinez.

Joao Palhinha comes into the midfield which suggests a change in formation as he replaces full-back Diogo Dalot.

I must admit, the thing that strikes me about this side is just how much quality it possesses.

They will be confident of a win today, surely.

Wow, now I was not expecting this...

Turkey's matchday one hero, Arda Guler - drops to the bench as they name their 11 to face Portugal.

Many see him as the team's star man, but he has been dropped as one of four changes to the team.

Zeki Celik, Yunus Akgun, and Kerem Akturkoglu, all come into the side while Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir replaces Mert Gunok in between the sticks.

Bedlam here, but a good kind. The atmosphere is fantastic. I’d give some credit for that to the Portuguese fans, but this feels very much like a home game for Turkey. There is a huge Turkish population in Germany and Dortmund in particular, with approximately 23,000 Turks in the city.

The drive to this magnificent stadium was accompanied by the usual tailgate party, with Turkish flags trailing and horns incessantly honking. The latter included the driver of my cab, though he was irate about the traffic.

It's an absolutely gorgeous day in Dortmund, the sun is beating down on the pitch and there is barely a cloud to be seen. I hope fans have their sun cream on hand.

It's set to be a cracking afternoon!

The owner of the most goals in the history of international football, Cristiano Ronaldo is no stranger to stepping up when his country needed him most.

Germany marks his sixth appearance in the European Championship finals, more than any other player in the competition's history.

The legendary forward has also scored more goals than any other player with 14 in the finals since 2004.

A goal in Portugal's opening game eluded him though, and Ronaldo will be hoping he can open his account this evening.

This isn't the first time major stakes have been on the line when these two teams have met.

After finishing second in their 2022 World Cup qualifying group, Portugal were forced to go through the play-offs to earn a spot in Qatar.

Standing in their way at the semi-final stage was a dogged Turkey side looking to secure their place in the finals for the first time in two decades.

Ultimately though, Portugal's experience at the highest levels would win out, with goals from Otavio, Diogo Jota, and Matheus Nunes enough to secure a 3-1 victory in Porto.

With kick-off less than 90 minutes away, fans have started massing around the Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund.

Two countries both known for their love of the beautiful game have brought with them a sea of colour to the famous stadium as they prepare for the nerve-wracking action of watching their team at a major tournament.

A place at the top of Group A is potentially at stake here, so expect both teams to waste little time in attempting to seize the initiative.
