More Fan Reaction...
Anonymous: Could have easily lost that game. Another underwhelming performance. Penalties can go either way. If this level of play can go on to win the Euros, the standard of isn't great.
Russel, Manchester: Holland must be shaking in their boots, not.
Mehal, UK: The Dutch will wipe the floor with England in that Semi.
Angus, Manchester: Another scraped win, this time on penalties. It makes you wonder when their luck's going to run out.

Alan Shearer: 'England ecstatic'
The emotions the England team will be going through - they'll be ecstatic and so they should. They've put an incredible shift in.
A big shout-out to the manager - his preparation was absolutely key. The players he's brought on to take penalties, they were just perfect. We know how pressurised that situation is and they made it look so easy.
21:17
Gary Neville: 'England have tournament know-how'
I think we've just got to resign ourselves to the fact that it's going to be a bit of a struggle and that we will have to work through games.
They've got tournament experience and tournament know-how. They haven't gone the whole way, but they've gone longer than most England teams and they deserve huge credit for that.
20:32
Jude Bellingham: 'Our best performance'
All in all, it's probably our best performance of the tournament. We're very proud of the boys. The things you can't always measure and see is character and mentality and we showed that again in the shootout. For subs to come on and take a penalty in that pressure is a special, special thing.
I do the practice like all the other lads and I have my process. I rely on the practice I do. Sometimes you can step up and miss. I always think there's a comfort when you're following a process you've come to terms with.
These moments are even more special or only special if you go on to win the next game and hopefully win the tournament. It's moments like these that you look back on and make it even more worth it. It all becomes worth it if you can back it up and that's what we have to do in the next few days.

Harry Kane: 'That's tournament football'
That's tournament football for you. You have to find a way. When you look at past champions in competitions, they have to go through penalty shootouts. It comes down to moments.
For [Bukayo] Saka to step up and score that goal was special for him. I was weirdly calm during penalties. We have a lot more players that take them for their club. I know they are comfortable and know [Jordan] Pickford normally saves one.
I think penalty shootouts are the highest pressure you will feel as a professional footballer. But for him [Saka] to step up like he did after the tough time he had been through [in 2020]. I am really proud of him and proud of everyone. There is one week left. We will see how far we can go.

Gareth Southgate: 'So brave from Bukayo'
I thought the players were brilliant, it is the best we have played. To come from behind and shown character and resilience we did... it isn't just about playing well.
It was so brave from Bukayo [Saka], he is one of our best and we were never in question he would take one. But we all knew what he went through.
Huge performance, huge result and we are still in it. We had to be tactically spot on. We are in a third semi-final and it says a lot about the whole group. I thought we had good control.
19:06
Bukayo Saka: 'I am proud of myself'
I am going to put it up there, special. How we fought back and to go to penalties. Last time we took at penalty shootout at the Euros we know what happened. I believed. I felt like we dominated the whole game and the chance would come and I took it - I am proud of myself for that.
I have faith in God. To come back from something like that is really difficult, today I took the chance. I think it shows how much we want to win this tournament. Hopefully, next game we can win in 90 minutes but if this is what it takes – we will do anything!
18:55
Trent Alexander-Arnold: 'We showed character'
Incredible, these are the goals that we set for ourselves. Difficult opponent going behind and the team showed a lot of character, belief, heart, and spirit out there.
We knew it was going to be tight. Whatever it takes and no matter what we win - that is all that matters to us.
It is what we have practiced. When the gaffer said I was taking one, I enjoy it and I practice it - I knew I had to just execute it. All five penalties from us were great.

'First time since Serbia, England not booed off'
The first time since Serbia that England haven't been booed off at half-time. So there is progress here. England have indeed been much improved. The system allows Foden and Bellingham to see the ball. Saka is a threat. Could do with a shot on target, mind.
16:53
'England lacking edge'
Speaks volumes that even though England haven't had a shot on target, that has been a pretty good half compared to some of the football we've seen here.
It's a team that looks like they're flowing so much better but they're just lacking that edge in the final third. Harry Kane has to get in the game.
16:42
16:32
'Huge groans from the English contingent'
Half an hour in, no shots on target for either side. England final ball too often finds red, while likes of Konsa/Stones have made a couple of big goalmouth interventions at other end. All very even.
That England corner that ended up back at Pickford has just drawn huge groans from the English contingent in the stands.
16:30
'Much improved England display'
Half an hour in but it's fair to say that this is a much improved England display. Yes, the bar was low but they look a lot sharper. Phil Foden in particular is so much more involved and Bukayo Saka is causing problems for Michel Aebischer. Though the Swiss centre-back trio look solid.
16:18
16:15
'England can't let Xhaka get comfortable'
Theo Walcott in the Media Hub before the game was talking about what it's like to play with Granit Xhaka. 'He's the dictator on the pitch,' said Walcott.
Already we're seeing that. It's the basics but England simply can't let the former Arsenal man get too comfortable on the ball.
16:09
'Disappointed to see Trippier on the left'
England formation is difficult to work out here... very fluid so far, and some holes have appeared in the middle of the park. Level enough opening, though
I'm disappointed to see Trippier on the left. His skillset is greatly diminished on that side. Southgate had a chance to play him on the right and I had hoped he'd take it.
16:07
'Unchartered territory for Switzerland'
I spent a day at the Swiss camp earlier in the week and one of their coaches asked me what the 'ambiance' was like around the English camp and amongst the English fans.
They know that Gareth Southgate's side are under pressure to deliver here but you have to remember that Switzerland have never reached a semi-final at a major tournament before. This is unchartered territory for them.
15:52
'England simply have to turn up'
Chris Sutton says Gareth Southgate must have been doing something right to get England to then quarter-finals. Not really. He’s just been lucky. England have drawn three 90 minute games out of four so far.
What Southgate must do is get something right today. England simply have to turn up against this Swiss side.

Gareth Southgate: 'A brilliant opportunity'
Watching the games yesterday was a reminder that teams have a clear style like Spain - they were drawn into going long as Germany pressed so well.
Winning tournaments is much more than the style of play and we have reiterated that point to the players. Whatever formation we play we want to get the pressure right on the opposition.
Let’s see what the formation is first, we are always trying to get the best out of everybody. Today is a brilliant opportunity to get to another semi-final again against a team who are playing well. We cannot be giving them the game that they want and we are looking forward to the challenge.
15:27
15:25
Phil Foden: 'We're extremely confident'
Yeah, we changed formation to match what they do, to try and get pressure up the field and try and retain the ball. So, yeah, let's see if it works, and, yeah, looking forward to it.
Hopefully [it works]. It depends on the team in general. If the team plays well, I think the attacking forwards play a lot better as well. So, like I said, if we get the formation right and the press right, it'll give us a lot of confidence and, yeah, we'll play a lot better, I feel.
Yeah, extremely confident. Like I said, we've worked hard on it, and in training, it's been working really well. So, yeah, I'm looking forward today to put the practice into work and, yeah, hopefully, we can get rewards from it.

'I am disappointed that Trent's not starting'
Hat-tip (as always) to our Chief Football Reporter Sami Mokbel for telling us this morning what the England team would be. That’s five games out of five out here for Sami.
BUT I am disappointed that Trent Alexander-Arnold is not England’s right wing-back. I thought the change of formation would have enabled Gareth Southgate to get the Liverpool player into the team.

Nerves and excitement for the Konsa family
I bumped into Ezri Konsa’s family in my hotel before leaving for the stadium. Lovely to listen to them talk about the excitement – and yes nerves too – they were feeling ahead of the Aston Villa defender’s tournament debut.
Sometimes we forget how young some of these players are. We wish you luck Ezri.
14:37
Jamie Carragher: 'I can't fathom Trippier over Trent'
Kieran Trippier has done a decent job at left-back. He's picked him over Trent Alexander-Arnold, which I just cannot fathom at all. I mean, that's not the Liverpool fan in me.
The reason that you'd play Trippier over Trent, I just can't get my head around. The only reason would be that Kieran has played maybe a few more games, maybe he trusts him.
But when you say defensively, the whole point of playing three at the back is to release your wing-backs. And you've got Kyle Walker behind you, he's the quickest player in the squad to mop up anything if you get caught out defensively.
So, to not put Trent in that position, I cannot believe that one. I must be honest, I can't. I can only imagine where his head is right now in this tournament. But Kieran Trippier is a player who Gareth trusts, he puts him in. Whether it be left back, right back, right wing-back, left wing-back, he always seems to find a place for him. But I would have played Trent in that position.

Gareth Southgate: '100th match last thing on my mind'
Well, I’m very proud, but it’s the least important statistic of the week. The only thing that matters is that it’s a quarter-final and my complete focus is on trying to get my country into another semi-final.
So, I’m sure in years to come I’ll look back on that and reflect with great pride but at the moment it’s the last thing on my mind really.

Fan Opinions...
Carol, London: Surely Trent is a better wingback than Trippier. I thought playing wing backs is supposed to use more attacking players than adding in more defensive players.
Anonymous: Three at the back of Stones, Walker, and Konsa and play Trent and Gordon as wing-backs. Gordons got the speed and Trents got the knowledge. Protected by a midfield of Mainoo and Rice with Bellingham and Palmer in a fluid trio with Kane up top. If it doesn't work, make subs at 70 of Foden and Toney and move to 4 at the back ready for extra time.
Henry, London: I just can’t deal with Trippier playing at Left back anymore. 3-5-2 with Trent at RWB would be best.
13:34
Rio Ferdinand: 'We're better in a back three'
I think we're better in a back three, with the personnel and profile that we've got available at the moment. But my biggest worry will be that we become a back five [with the wing-backs pushed back] and we stay there.
In every game so far we've stepped backwards and been in a low block. If you do that with a back five, we won't get out and we'll be sitting there waiting to get beat.
13:23
Darren Anderton: 'Anthony Gordon has to play '
For me, I would play [Bukayo] Saka at left-back, take a risk and I want to see a team that is more enjoyable to watch. If we can get those players on the pitch, and then get Saka coming from deep, it would be great.
I think [Phil] Foden, it will be interesting to see what happens and if he’s coming back but, for me [Anthony] Gordon has to play and get Foden in the free role, and drop [Jude] Bellingham back in.
