England vs Netherlands - Euro 2024 RECAP: All the reaction as super sub Ollie Watkins sends Three Lions into final

They've only gone and done it again.

Gareth Southgate's England are in yet another European Championship final, and my word was it dramatic.

Just like Mamma Mia, England fans were thinking 'Here we go again' when Xavi Simons fired the Netherlands in front early.

But then England decided to show what they can really do for the first time in this tournament.

Harry Kane equalised from the spot and suddenly England were peppering the Dutch, it only seemed like it was going one way.

Things calmed down in the second half, though, and the match seemed destined for extra-time yet again...

Step up, Ollie Watkins.

The Aston Villa man popped up in the final minute of normal time, just nine minutes after coming on, and fired low and hard into the bottom corner.

Pandemonium ensued, and England are in another final. Can they win this one, though, that is the question?

Spain stand in their way, and it will be by no means an easy task to shift them aside.

We will be there on Sunday, and we know all of you will be too. The whole country will have eyes glued to screens.

Well then, England have just one more hurdle, but it won't be easy.

Spain lay in waiting for Gareth Southgate's side in the final after they beat France in Munich yesterday.

I'm not going to beat around the bush, the Spanish have been by far the best side all tournament.

England could be made dizzy by their exuberant wingers, but they will just have to stay focused.

It's going to be a cracking finale to one hell of a tournament!

Harry Kane is pumped up!

The England captain has given a rallying cry to England supporters after the Three Lions made the final.

He seems confident, and raring to go. Do you all feel the same way?

By the way, I love the filming style. It's as shaky and blurry as the videos my dad sends to the family group chat.

Gareth Southgate, England manager, on England's fans:

I hope they are enjoying a few beers! We have had some incredible nights the last seven or eight years. These games have been dramatic because the goals have come so late.

The only reason I took the job on was to try and bring success to the nation and improve English football. I am immensely proud to take this team to a final overseas. It will be a huge task but we are still here and fighting.

Kobbie Mainoo, England midfielder, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live:

It is an indescribable feeling, we are all buzzing. It has been such a journey and we have built on old performances, the only way is up - time to put us in history. In the first half, it was clicking with the whole team. We felt like we had the game under control in the middle of the park.

In the second half we had to grind it out, it was tough. The whole squad was a help, the impact from Ollie [Watkins] - what a finish! The time was coming for him, I could feel it.

This kid is a star!

Kobbie Mainoo somehow just keeps on getting better, every time I watch him I am left impressed.

It's hard to believe he is just 19 years old, he has maturity well beyond his years.

In the first half, in particular, he was a general alongside Declan Rice in the middle of the park.

To put it bluntly, he is a special player.

He couldn't, could he?

Harry Kane is now level with Dani Olmo and Cody Gakpo at the top of the Golden Boot rankings with three goals.

Considering the criticism he has come under this tournament, that would be one hell of an achievement.

His penalty today was his sixth goal in a knockout stage match at the European Championship. That's more than any other player in the competition’s history.

The record don't stop there for Captain Kane.

It was also his ninth goal in the knockout stages of major tournaments (World Cup/Euros), no European player has scored more.

Not bad, eh?

Gareth Southgate, England boss, speaking to ITV1:

It has to be the best. It's another landmark but we played well throughout the game. It was complicated. They kept changing so we had to change. It was so special at the end.

On substitutions making an impact:

Sometimes it can work that way. The most important thing is all of the squad can come into the game. Their attitudes have been exemplary and I'm so happy for Ollie.

Harry got that knock in the first half. Ollie can press well and runs in behind. We had a goal cleared off the line and we hit the woodwork. I think we deserved to win tonight.

Ollie Watkins’ winner was late, very late.

The ball hit the net at 89:59, which means it is the latest winning goal scored in the semi-final in major tournament history.

To make this statistic even better, it was also England’s only shot on target in the second half.

That's what you call clutch...

I think I felt the ground shake in London when that goal went in.

I could even hear screams from my office as the ball hit the back of the net from Ollie Watkins' boot.

Every pub, beer garden, and house across the country would have erupted with noise when that went in.

I never thought I’d be playing in the Euros for England. You can dream but I am a realist, I just take by day and one step at a time. I was just focused on getting back into the first team at Exeter. I have put a lot of work to get to this point, not just this season. I will enjoy every moment.

Recently I have obviously got a bit frustrated. I don’t like to be on the bench, I have had the best season of my career. A few friends messaged me and said be patient and the amount of people who messaged me tonight saying I would score when I come on was ridiculous. Hopefully, they can do the same for the final or give me the lottery numbers. I didn’t want to get off the pitch at the end, I wanted to soak it all in as it doesn’t happen often.

On his winning goal:

The ball came into me, hold up is not the strongest side of my game but the goal was my bread and butter. I said to Cole Palmer we were both going to go on the pitch and he would set me up and it happened. You don’t get that opportunity very often and I had to be greedy and take the shot. I don’t think I have hit the ball so sweet like that before.

Have you all got your breath back yet? I just about have.

I think it's time we take a look at the full-time statistics, although they don't really matter in the scheme of things.

What it does show is that England got what they deserved.

Across the 90 minutes, they were better than the Dutch in all departments, you can't argue with that.

England's best display of the tournament.

It's a night that these fans will never forget.

There are so many pictures of Three Lions in celebration at Signal Iduna Park - too many to count.

Every single one features fans with smiles on their faces, the delight is there for all to see.

I can only imagine the adrenaline rush that they all felt.

England fans are unsurprisingly in fine voice as they leave Signal Iduna Park. What a night they have had.

They have even created a little chant too, it's very catchy I must admit.

I wonder how many of them will actually be there?

I have to admit, I struggled to stop laughing when I saw this.

I thought 'Surely Jordan Pickford has not just tweeted that', and then I realised it was 11 years ago.

England fans will be hoping their side teach Spain a #lesson in the final.

Bill, Oxford: Ollie Watkins. Foot like a traction engine. Has to start in the final. Palmer too.

Fred, Surrey: Fair play to Gareth. As crazy as this sounds, this is the first time we've ever beaten a major nation in a knockout game of a World Cup or Euros outside of England. And we did it in 90 minutes.

The records keep falling with every passing moment.

Remember what England were like before Gareth Southgate came into the fray?

I do, they were pretty rubbish.

But Southgate has brought incredible moments back to the England men's national set-up.

He has guided England to two major finals out of four tournaments.

It just incredible what he has achieved.

On facing Spain in the final:

Another unbelievably tough game. There's one more game to make history. That's what we're excited about. It's been a tough journey but there's one more. 90 minutes, 120, penalties, whatever it takes we'll be there. I'm looking forward to it.

I'll make this brief.

To lose a match in its dying embers is not easy for anybody, but it must hurt so badly for the Netherlands.

They have now lost five out of their last six major tournament semi-finals.

Football is a cruel, cruel sport.

Penalty? I don't know if I should say anything about it. Maybe it's a good thing that referees are held accountable?

Prince William has shared his adoration of Ollie Watkins via X (formerly Twitter).

Remember, the Prince of Wales is an Aston Villa fan, so he must be doubly buzzing about that goal.

The age-old question nearly has its answer.

For years this chant was nothing more than a bit of a joke as England meandered through major tournaments.

Well, it may now actually come home.

England are one game away from lifting a first major trophy since 1966.

I've been waiting for that moment for weeks. It's taken a lot of hard work to get to where I am today. I'm delighted. I swear on my life that I said to Cole Palmer that he's going to set me up today and I'm going to score. It's the best feeling ever.

There's been a lot of criticism but we're in the final and that's all that matters. We've got that bounce-back factor. Going behind seems to kick us into gear. We've won on penalties and come from behind.

Sweet Caroline is an anthem that will always be seen is football as an England victory song.

When the Three Lions beat Denmark in the semi-final three years ago, they jumped up and down to it after.

Once again, the players, staff, and the fans belt it out. I mean, it is one hell of a tune.

Neil Diamond will be proud!

Look at what it means.

As soon as the whistle blew the limbs in that England end were simply sensational.

The noise with it too. They have just witnessed greatness from the Three Lions.

Imagine the scenes if they win the whole thing!

Will probably get lost in the aftermath but England’s fans were absolutely magnificent tonight. Vastly outnumbered and yet it felt like a home game. Yellow Wall silenced. And a great night for the manager, who made the right calls at the right time.

This tournament he has been getting pelters from all directions, and he has deflected them all.

Some fans wanted him sacked after the group stage, then after the round of 16, even after the quarter-final.

But he continuously proves the doubters wrong by taking this England team to places the country have not been before.

England had to suffer for large parts because of the switch Ronald Koeman made. They couldn't find a way it was crying out for a substitute, that man was Ollie Watkins and he did it perfectly well.

That's certainly England's motto, they have shown that all tournament, and have done it once again.

The Three Lions have created history tonight by coming from a goal down to reach the European Championship final.

It's a superb finish by Ollie Watkins, but what I am here for are the celebrations.

I honestly can't believe that England have done it.

Whatever you feel towards Gareth Southgate, what he has done for English football is sensational.

The players and Southgate are now celebrating with their fans to the soundtrack of 'Sweet Carlone'.

ENGLAND ARE IN ANOTHER EUROS FINAL!

This Three Lions side just don't know how to lose, they have delivered on the big stage again.

Ollie Watkins the hero off the bench with a sensational goal in the 90th minute.

England fully deserved it, and now it's time for them to party!

Jude Bellingham wins a free kick with nearly five minutes gone of additional time.

There will be just two added minutes for England to defend their lead.

Signal Iduna Park is a cauldron of noise and it's England fans that are making all of it.

OLLIE WATKINS SURELY WINS IT AT THE DEATH!

With seconds remaining of normal time Watkins smashes the ball into the far corner to break Dutch hearts.

The substitute is sent through by Cole Palmer and the chance is tough, but he somehow squeezes it in.

The England substitutes run onto the pitch to celebrate, it's pure bedlam in Dortmund.

Another final looms!

Cole Palmer has the chance to net a late winner... but he blows it!

The ball is switched to Luke Shaw on the left and he fires a brilliant ball across the area.

It rolls to Plamer who sees his name in lights, but he blasts high and wide.

Palmer has to do so much better there, that's a big chance!

Cody Gakpo is causing England some real problems by running straight at them.

He has his eyes set on the box and just as he is getting there Bukayo Saka hacks him down, who then gets a yellow card.

The free-kick is put behind for what looks like a corner by John Stones ... but the referee gives a goal kick.

Very weird.

Brilliant defending from Marc Guehi to keep the scores level.

He is scrambling back as Wout Weghorst tries to break free in the box and shoot, and somehow he throws his body in the right place to block the ball.

Incredible desire.

England thought that they had done it, and so did I.

It's a brilliant move from England, their best of the second half by a mile.

Unfortunately, the flag was up.

Gareth Southgate is finally making some more changes.

Surprisingly, Phil Foden is being hooked after his best performance of this tournament.

His replacement isn't a bad one, though, Cole Palmer enters the action.

Ollie Watkins also comes on with goalscorer Harry Kane the man to make way.

Some big calls.

Bulkayo saka sens the England fans wild as he smashes in from close range, but the flag is up.

VAR checks and quickly declares that the goal will not stand.

It is a great move by England, Phil Foden feeds Kyle Walker to pull back for Saka.

It's all for nothing, though.

The Shaw change hasn't worked. He's not getting forward into the space Trippier was. England have faded here and feels like they could be holding on final 10mins. It's getting into "Gareth, do something!!" territory.

Gareth Southgate needs to make some changes now, this match is screaming out for them.

The Netherlands are taking control of this match, and they don't look like relinquishing it.

I think my call has already been answered as I type this, Ollie Watkins is set to come on.

Kyle Walker, what a tackle that is!

Cody Gakpo is racing away on the left and with one more touch will be clear.

But Walker races across and perfectly times in sliding tackle to take the ball away from him.

Bukay Saka is down holding his face after a collision with Nathan Ake.

Nothing is given despite the fact that Ake hits him with his hand. I guess he has to just get on with it.

It's starting to get feisty...

England have got to withstand this spell of Dutch pressure. The momentum England had in the first half has gone. It's that time in the game now where one moment of brilliance or one mistake could be the difference.

Jude Bellingham is like an excited puppy, and that eagerness earns him a booking.

His eyes light up as he senses a 50/50 challenge with Stefan de Vrij. He then clatters into the Dutchman and gets a yellow.

Is this football or WWE?

The Dutch are fighting with England's defenders from the corner trying to wrestle themselves free.

The referee isn't happy with them and blows for a free-kick in England's favour.

Jordan Pickford is called into action again as he is forced into punching a dangerous cross wide.

Denzel Dumfries was lurking at the back post so he had to do it.

The Netherlands are starting to apply pressure, England need to be careful.

Wout Weghorst is penalised for accidentally elbowing John Stones.

To be fair to the big man, he is so tall his elbow is just naturally at that height.

Still a foul, though.

Jordan Pickford to the rescue for England!

The first big chance of the second period goes to the Netherlands and it comes from a free-kick.

Joey Veerman swings in a stunning ball from deep and Virgil van Dijk gets on the end of it and prods it toward goal.

Thankfully for England, Pickford gets down low to push it wide.

Lee Dixon, former England defender, on ITV1:

The Dutch have certainly squeezed that triangle in the middle of the park. England's momentum with passing and running has stopped. Foden certainly hasn't been on the ball as much.

Cody Gakpo is one angry man, right now.

He plays the ball out to Denzel Dumfries and then screams for it back as he races into the area, but he doesn't get it.

Instead, Dumfries shifts the ball to Joey Veerrman who looks to pick out Wout Weghorst in the box.

But he overshoots the cross and then Gakpo goes bezerk.

Fair to say the tempo has dropped in the second half. The Dutch look a lot more solid defensively but they're so deep in their own half. England have got to make the pressure count.

The Netherlands have plugged the gaps that were open in the first half, in turn, they are nullifying Phil Foden.

If England are to break them open, they are going to have to be patient, and so are we.

This game has lost its pace significantly. nerves seem to have crept into both sides.

Let's hope for the sake of our eyes that they revert back to their first-half bravery.

Luke Shaw's first involvement is high up the pitch s he looks to fire a threatening cross into the box.

It's not a very good delivery, though, and Denzel Dumfries is there to block it.

England have shifted to four at the back here, with Kyle Walker now at right-back and Bukayo Saka having much more freedom down the right wing. Interesting decision but clearly Gareth Southgate wanted to get Luke Shaw on so they could offer more of a threat down the left.

Where are you, Harry Kane? (again)

I feel like I have de ja vu as Bukayo Saka is in on the right and cuts the ball back into the middle for an England shirt to attack.

But no one is there. That has happened way too much this tournament.

It's been a bit of a subdues start to the second half.

England aren't exactly renowned for coming out all guns blazing after the break.

It seems like it's the same here.

Craig Hope was right, Luke Shaw is indeed coming on.

The full-back is moving to his usual left-hand side and replaces Kieran Trippier.

Ronald Koeman also makes a change. Wout Weghorst moves up top in place of Donyell Malen.

I'm guessing that means they are changing formation...

Anyway, we are back underway in Dortmund.

My word, Phil Foden has been excellent today.

People have been calling out for Foden to bring his A-game and he just hasn't found it this tournament.

Well, until today.

He could have had a brace in that first half, he was just very unlucky.

One shot off the line, and another off the post. Another day, and England are 3-1 up.

Fodemn has finally found his form.

Was it ever in doubt?

Harry Kane doesn't always net from the spot, but I never felt like he was going to miss.

It was the power that beat Bart Verbruggen in the end, and the placement too.

A brilliant penalty.

Luke Shaw out warming-up by himself at the break. That's usually the sign of an imminent change.

Now this is very interesting...

I mean, this was some strike, wasn't it?

Xavi Simons was almost falling over as he smashes the ball into the top bins after just seven minutes.

England fans must have thought 'Here we go again' as this went in. To be honest, so did I.

A beauty.

This tells you all you need to know.

England were simply dominant in that half. More possession, more shots, more on target.

They swarmed the Dutch as soon as they went behind. We haven't seen this from them for years.

They are still only level, though.

Ed Sheeran and Adele have been spotted among the star-studded crowd in Germany cheering on the three Lions.

The 'Shape of You' singer could be seen smiling in his red England shirt alongside pals. While Adele looked incredibly trendy in a black suit jacket and white t-shirt combo.

I can't be the only one who did not want that half to end. And I can't be the only one who is surprised by how good that half was. What a spectacle.

England the better side, but the Dutch have had their chances too and one each is probably a fair scoreline given that the penalty was a tad fortunate. I can see Ronald Koeman rolling the dice first though.

A little bit of stress before half-time for England as the Dutch applied some pressure, but they held out.

Then Felix Zwayer puts the whistle to his lips and blows for half-time.

What a half of football for England, their best of the tournament by a street mile.

they went behind early after some brilliance from Xavi Simons, but only 11 minutes later Harry Kane levelled from the spot.

Phil Foden came close on a multitude of occasions as England hammered at the Dutch's door, but it's level at the break.

I did not want that half to end!

'God save the King' rings around Signal Iduna Park as the England fans give their boys a push just before the break.

they haven't touched the ball yet in stoppage time, though.

Kieran Trippier tries to float a cross to Phil Foden who is lurking at the back post, but Bart Verburggen collects with ease.

Then the board displays that there will be three minutes of stoppage time.

Can England knick a goal before the break?

Now Kobbie Mainoo wants to have a go from outside the box, but his try is not such a good one.

The ball is certainly moving as it leaves his boot but it is deflected miles wide.

Nothing comes from the resulting corner.

Phil Foden has had his best half of the tournament so far, and so have England. The worry is that they need to start converting these chances.

This is the best Phil Foden has played for England in a very, very long time.

Yet again he fancies his chances from distance and he curls a brilliant strike toward the bottom corner.

It skims off the wet turf dangerously before Bart Verbruggen just about holds onto the ball.

England will want to capitalise on this display by getting another goal before half time.

It would be the least they deserve, they have been all over the Netherlands for the majority of this half.

All the noise coming from the England fans now as the Foden song echoes around the stadium. Might be worth changing Spain for Germany in the final line because, should they prevail here, that’s who England would play.

Oh dear, Memphis Depay is down clutching his hamstring.

He is going to have to come off, and he looks devastated. He could be out for a while with that.

Joey Veerman is on to replace him. Remember, he was hooked in the first half after a poor performance against Austria.

England finally reminding people they can play. Best game of the tournament so far.

Phil Foden has just crashed the post with an absolute scorching effort.

I'm not sure what he ate for breakfast but it's certainly made a difference.

Foden picks up the ball 30 yards out, makes room for himself, and then bends an effort off the top of the post.

I thought that was in!

The 10 minutes after England's goal was the best they've played all Euros. Foden, Saka and Mainoo at the heart of it. They feel like the better side here.

I nearly jinxed it...

Denzel Dumfries crashes a header off the bar from a corner just as I hit send on the last post.

A warning sign that the Dutch are still in this.

This is the best England have played in this tournament by an absolute mile, not even close.

The midfield are gelling, they are not given the Netherlands much space to move whatsoever.

Keep this up and it will be a good day for the Three Lions.

How is that not a foul?

Phil Foden looks like he is away with just the keeper to beat, but he is pulled back and loses the ball.

I'm not sure why, but the referee just waves play on.

Heck of a response from England after going behind. They're moving the ball so well and causing the Dutch all sorts of problems. England are playing with a confidence we haven't seen much of in the tournament so far.

How has that not gone in? I am in disbelief!

Phil Foden is in and dances around several defenders in the box, but he takes an age to pull the trigger.

Just as everybody is screaming for him to do so he rolls the ball under Bart Verburggen.

It's just crossing the line before it's hooked away at the critical moment by Denzel Dumfries.

I completely agree, Craig.

But England and their fans won't care about that. They are level and are bouncing in that far corner.

This has been an incredible opening to the match, I'm not used to this intensity in England games!

HARRY KANE LEVELS IT FROM THE SPOT!

The England captain smashes it into the bottom left-hand corner, banishing the ghosts of Qatar in the process.

Bart Verbruggen went the right way, but he had absolutely no chance.

Parity restored.

Oh my word, England have a penalty.

Harry Kane is hacked down by Denzel Dumfries as he takes his shot, and the Referee goes to the screen and awards the spot kick.

Kane will step up...

Bukayo Saka is causing problems yet again, he really is a livewire.

He dribbles past a number of players before falling over, and he screams for a penalty.

Harry Kane then smashes inches over the bar.

Wait, VAR are checking for a penalty...

This is much better from Harry Kane, much, much better.

He receives the ball just outside the area and decides to just have a crack.

It's a decent effort and is heading for the bottom corner, but Bart Verbruggen gets down low to push it away.

Oh, nearly a brilliant response from England.

They win a couple of free kicks in dangerous positions and the latter is clipped to the back post.

Declan Rice meets it and pulls it back for Harry Kane, but the ball is taken away from him just as he goes to pull the trigger.

The noise inside Signal Iduna Park is coming from that Orange wall, and my word what a noise it is.

If there was a roof when that goal went in, it would have been blown off.

A dream start for the Dutch.

It's taken the Dutch just seven minutes...

Xavi Simons has nearly taken the net off with a cracker of a strike after Declan Rice lost the ball in midfield.

The youngster had a lot of work to do, but he just crashes the ball straight into the top corner.

Early signs that the Dutch are determined to play out from the back. The way they moved the ball from the keeper to the final third there was quality. Ronald Koeman has been clear that they're always under pressure to play good football. A positive start on that note for the Netherlands

Jeez, the Netherlands are lightning-quick on the counter.

England press them high up the pitch, but the Dutch just pass around them before Xavi Simons spots Donyell Malen on his bike.

I reckon about two-thirds of those inside are Netherlands fans and that orange wall is going to be quite a sight. Plenty of England flags though and plenty of colour. Let's hope we get plenty of entertainment.

A Yorkshire pub owner gutted the interior of an English pub and transported it to Germany so fans could get a 'proper pint'.

Paul Moss's opened the New Crown, in Dortmund in 2021 because 'he hates German bars', but this summer it has become a safe haven for England fans during the Euros.

In 2019 the 52-year-old stripped the pub in Bridlington, North Yorkshire after it was put on the market due to slow business and transport everything, the beer taps, the bar, the stain glass windows, hundreds of miles to the town of Iserlohn.

He made sure to keep everything quintessential British though with portraits of her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth, posters of old gigs, and even a tube stop sign.

Speaking to the Times Moss said:'I hate German bars because they’re all a bit sterile, shiney and covered in chrome. The old sticky carpet, dark wood and warm bitter on a winter’s day is what you get from a British pub.

We suspected the Dutch would outnumber the English here and that’s certainly the case. There is one substantial bank of English fans on the lower tier behind one goal. That apart, it’s a sea of Oranje.

The England players will be feeling exactly the same as you are right now as they make their final preparations.

I understand people asking the questions. Harry will himself say that he probably hasn't performed or been as sharp as he would have wanted to be but he has got two goals.

But you don't leave out your captain and your record goalscorer when you're in a semi-final. I'd be amazed if that happened. I don't see that happening.

Cody Gakpo has been on smoke this tournament!

I don't know what he has been eating for breakfast in Germany, but it has got him firing on all cylinders.

Gakpo is certainly the danger man for the Netherlands and will be key for them against England.

He is the joint top scorer at this tournament with three goals, while also providing a superb assist against Romania.

If England can keep him quiet it will do wonders for their final hopes.

It will be hard, mind.

This isn't the first time these two sides have clashed in a major tournament.

When you think of England facing the Netherlands, your mind surely goes straight to the demolition of the Dutch in 1996.

It is perhaps the best tournament performance England have put in over the past three to four decades.

They were untouchable that day as Alan Shearer and Teddy Sheringham both bagged braces.

Gareth Southgate played too... and was booked.

Our officers are at the location supporting German colleagues. We would advise supporters to be aware of their surroundings and seek areas where there is a German Police presence.

Five England fans left injured after a series of attacks by Dutch hooligans on bars where they were drinking. UK Police say gangs of Dutch risk fans have travelled and have warned England supporters to seek areas where there are German Police.

The Netherlands took a while to get going in this tournament, but boy is their engine running beautifully now.

They crawled their way through the group stage, finishing in third place behind Austria and France.

However, strong displays against Romania and Turkey has restored hope within the Dutch faithful.

They come here today full of confidence... and this is how they got here:

I think it's fair to say it's been a treacherous road for England.

The Three Lions started off on a positive note against Serbia, but results and performances since have left little to be desired.

But despite everything, they have still made it to the last four. Let's have a look back at England's results.

With the lack of evidence that were many there, I was starting to get worried for a second that it would be a sea of orange.

But some of the Three Lions faithful are already inside Signal Iduna Park marking their territory.

How loud will they be later? We will have to wait and see.

It seems the alleged attacks from Netherlands fans were unprovoked, according to a fan on X.

This is never nice to see.

Remember, it's only a select few that give fans a bad name.

It's honestly hard to fathom just how many Dutch supporters are in Dortmund.

They are everywhere, literally everywhere.

Oh dear, oh dear... this is not what you want to see.

For most of the day, we have seen both the Dutch and English fans enjoying their days in unison with no problems.

Unfortunately, the ugly side of football fandom has reared its head again.

It seems that Dutch fans have allegedly attacked English fans in a pub prior to the match.

Ugly scenes, very ugly.

I hope that all fans on the receiving end of these disgusting actions are OK.

We have touched on this already, but now we have a deeper analysis for you to have a look at.

You are always looking at the freshness of the team and the balance of the team and whether changes are going to make an improvement to the team or not. But all of the players go into the game in good condition. The game will take us in a certain direction that will make that decision for us.

Right, it's time to touch one of this week's hot topics.

Gareth Southgate came under fire for his decision-making against Switzerland in the quarter-final.

If you don't know why, I'll tell you.

Southgate did not make any changes until England went 1-0 down in the 75th minute, despite the Three Lions struggling in the second half.

His refusal to switch things up was confusing as it was clear as day that the players on the pitch were flagging.

If the performance is similar today, he will have to make some early changes.

Otherwise, it could be too late...

He may be like Marmite, but he has a brilliant record.

Tonight will be England's third quarter-final in just four tournaments under Gareth Southgate.

They hadn't managed to reach that stage in nine tournaments prior...

Remember, the grass isn't always greener. The days before these were pretty gloomy.

The ones that we have spoken to seem fairly confident that England can get the job done tonight.

One fan said he keeps saying 'it can't get any worse'. It could, though, England could get knocked out this evening.

Imagine the Three Lions play their best football all tournament tonight, but still get sent packing.

Well, Harry Kane appears to be the topic of mass debate.

The England captain has provided so many big moments for England over the years. He's Gareth Southgate's Mr. Reliable'.

However, he hasn't had the best of tournaments...

Fans have not been best pleased with Kane and it seems their patience has run thin with him. They want him to be dropped.

It's such a tough call because even when Kane is not on it he comes up with so many big goals.

But England do have some good options, including Ivan Toney.

Despite all of this, though, we expect Kane to be leading the line yet again this evening.

It's time for him to turn up.

Every direction you look in there are thousands of people donning the orange shirt of the Netherlands.

But how come there are so many fans?

Well, the Dutch usually travel well, but the fact that Dortmund isn't very far away really helps.

The weather is good too, so it's a cracking day out for even those who do not have tickets.

Expect to see an orange wall replacing the yellow wall later.

Paul McVeigh, former Premier League star turned sports psychologist, on how fans frustration is affecting England:

Lots of the body language from my side looks like frustration if I was to put it into a category. I feel like the frustration is coming from the fans who are watching who are used to seeing these world-class players playing every week and expecting them to do the same things in the Euros.

I think that frustration from the crowd is starting to seep into the players. But ultimately the players are handling a very difficult experience and that’s what you have to put into perspective.

England fans, you are not happy...

It's been a running theme this tournament that the Three Lions faithful haven't been best pleased with Gareth Southgate's team selections.

The story is exactly the same today, it hasn't taken me long to figure out that none of you are happy with the leaked team.

Luke Shaw has been injured for four months, it wasn't a possibility for him to play until the last match where he made a good contribution. We have to decide if he is ready to start but we are very happy to have him back.

He gives us balance, but Kieran Trippier has done a fantastic job. He has had many important nights with us over the last seven or eight years. He's great around the squad, we are very fortunate to have players like him in our squad.

Luke Shaw is going to have to wait then...

After returning from injury off the bench against Switzerland, hopes of a return to the starting 11 skyrocketed for Shaw.

He certainly looked in good knick when during his cameo against the Swiss, he gave England an injection of energy.

But it seems Kieran Trippier will keep his place on the left.

Shaw said he was ready, but obviously, Southgate wants to give him more time (not that there is much left).

I wonder how many minutes he will get?

So, now you have been reminded, what are you all thinking?

In all honesty, the trend throughout this tournament has shown that Gareth Southgate likes to stick with what he knows.

Ideally, you'd expect more changes to be made after the performances this tournament, but you can never expect them.

So, personally, I'm not surprised he is just making the one.

The Dutch fans in Dortmund are showing no signs of running out of energy as the hours continue to count down until kick off.

Their supporters are still signing, dancing and celebrating at the fan zone in the city.

Former Netherlands' midfielder Wesley Sneijder was among the guests to have been on stage with the fan zone band recently to continue the build-up.

England's team from the famous Euro 96 win over the Netherlands have taken very different paths in the 28 years since.

Many have remained in the game, namely England boss Gareth Southgate.

Others have dipped their toes into the world outside football, including several appearances on talent shows.

Mail Sport looks at the Three Lions' team of 1996 and where they are now.

Worth pointing out to Ruud Gullit that 'Three Lions' became the unofficial soundtrack to England's run to the Euro 96 semi-finals.

England's best performance of that run came against the Netherlands in the group stage.

Alan Shearer and Teddy Sheringham both scored twice as England earned a crushing 4-1 win in one of the most-acclaimed performances ever given by The Three Lions.

Jamie Carragher has been far from the only one to point out England's struggles during the tournament despite reaching the semi-finals.

Several England stars have faced criticism for their performances to date in Gemany.

Former England defender Jamie Carragher has been speaking on Sky Sports.

Carragher admits he is surprised be Southgate's comments that England have played with 'fear' at the tournament.

The pundit believes England fans cannot escape from the fact the Three Lions have not played well at Euro 2024 despite reaching the last four.

Carragher, however, has predicted England will face enough to reach the final and is backing them to do it... on penalties.

It does surprise me a little bit, maybe because the expectation is so great on this team because of what they have done before. When I was playing it almost felt like the quarter-final was par and a semi-final was an unbelievable achievement,' Carragher said.

It almost feels like now a semi-final is par for this group and that is a credit to them.

We can’t disguise the fact the team has been poor. The last game they started well for the first 15 to 20 minutes but we have won one game in five [in normal time]. There are very few players in the team who you could say are having a great tournament, it doesn’t feel like that.

It felt like something shifted with those celebrations after the penalties, like “we are in the semi-final and where we need to be”. We need to see the real England now and that may come from playing better opposition.

I think England just do it, it will be really tight and I wouldn’t be surprised if it goes to penalties. I think England go through on penalties.

There is a sea of orange at the Friedensplatz fan zone in the city, where their supporters have arrived on masse.

It is hard to pick out a fan who is not wearing their famous orange colours in the packed crowd.

Fans have been seen getting the pints in early in the hours building up to kick off.

One supporter has even turned up with a version of the European Championship trophy!

Could this be a potential boost for England?

Ronald Koeman and his Netherlands squad were left stranded on a station platform in stifling temperatures on Tuesday as they started their trip to Dortmund.

Dutch officials were forced to scramble for alternative arrangements when news filtered through that the Wolfsburg to Dortmund service they were waiting for had been cancelled thanks to a blockage on the line.

Instead of arriving in Dortmund ahead of a 7.45pm press conference on Tuesday night at the stadium, an emergency flight was booked to depart at 8.20pm.

That meant the Netherlands missed the opportunity for a warm-up and familiarisation session at Borussia Dortmund's stunning Signal Iduna Park stadium.

Koeman laughed off the disruption in an interview, insisting his squad had been able to relax having had a 30 minute flight to Dortmund.

The Three Lions are expected to be backed by 40,000 fans in Dortmund.

Only a small number will have been able to get tickets for the semi-final, but that has not stopped fans from bringing a party atmosphere to the city.

Despite having to contend with extortionate prices for tickets, accommodation and travel, fans who are in Germany say it is worth it to cheer on Gareth Southgate's team in their bid for glory.

As if to illustrate that point further, the Dutch fans certainly seem to be getting in the party spirit.

Around 80,000 Dutch fans have are claimed to have made the trip over the border into Germany ahead of the semi-final.

England and Netherlands fans have descended on Dortmund ahead of tonight's semi-final.

There may still be eight hours to go until kick-off but the atmosphere looks to be building nicely in the city.

England are expected to be outnumbered for the first time at the tournament this evening.

Mail Sport's Mike Keegan reported that officials expect Ronald Koeman's side to be backed by the majority of what will be a sold-out 80,000 crowd in Dortmund.

A 60-40 split is on the cards inside the stadium, while the Dutch will have half of Dortmund’s famous ‘Yellow Wall’. The remainder of those tickets went on general sale.

England's predicted team will please Martin Keown.

The Mail Sport columnist was pleased with how the set-up helped England control the match against Switzerland, as well as pushing the likes of Phil Foden higher up the pitch.

Keown believes Foden's partnership with Bukayo Saka can do damage to the Netherlands.

He suggests Foden's positioning could cause a problem for Virgil van Dijk this evening.

While there are plenty of opinions over the England team, there is expected to be only one change for tonight's semi-final.

Gareth Southgate is predicted to stick with the same system the Three Lions deployed against Switzerland, according to information from sources close to the camp.

Mail Sport's Sami Mokbel reports that centre back Marc Guehi, who was suspended for the quarter-final against Switzerland, is pushing for a recall in place of Ezri Konsa.

Luke Shaw is fit to start but Kieran Trippier is hopeful of keeping his place on the left.

Harry Kane will continue up front, despite concerns over his form and fitness.

Gareth Southgate has made few changes to his starting line-up at Euro 2024.

The England manager's main problem area was central midfield ahead of the tournament, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Conor Gallagher and now Kobbie Mainoo having played alongside Declan Rice.

Southgate opted for a hybrid formation for the quarter-final win over Switzerland, switching between a back four and a back three.

He could have some decisions to make tonight with Marc Guehi available again after suspension, while Luke Shaw has declared himself fit after coming on against Switzerland.
