Canada's number one shot-stopper Dayne St. Clair was caught engaging in the dark arts of goalkeeping, during his country's Copa America penalty-shootout loss to Uruguay.

St Clair was caught red-handed attempting to hide the water bottle of Uruguayan counterpart, Sergio Rochet, but was quickly rumbled.

During the shootout, Rochet can be seen storming behind his goal just before Canada's second penalty, as he spies St Clair hiding his water bottle behind the advertising hoardings.

Commentators were quick to see the funny side in St Clair's antics, but unfortunately for Canada's number one the referee didn't, booking him for unsportsmanlike conduct.  

It's not the first time we've seen a water bottle play a prominent role in an international match this summer, however.

England number one, Jordan Pickford, was photographed holding a bottle that had a cheatsheet printed on it, with all the ways Switzerland's penalty-takers would shoot. It would prove useful, as England beat the Swiss to reach the Euro 2024 semi-finals.

The Reds were forced to settle for fourth place in Copa America, after originally believing they were on course for third as they attempted to see the game out at 2-1.

An injury-time leveller from Luis Suarez (90+2 min) took the game to extra time, however, and finally penalties. 

Marco Bielsa's Uruguay side would win the shootout 4-3, with goals from Rodrigo Bentancur and Suarez hitting the back of the net.

Canada's Alphonso Davies and Ismael Kone were among names that would miss for Jesse Marsch's sides. 

It's the first time Canada have competed in a Copa America, which is traditionally a South American competition. 

But Copa organisers have been keen to bolster its popularity in recent years, expanding it to include teams from North America.
