No England players make Sofascore's best Euro 2024 XI - while TWO big Spain stars also miss out - but which Frenchman surprisingly makes the side?

  • Spain clinched their fourth European Championship after beating England
  • Three Spaniards are included in Sofascore's Euro 2024  Team of the Tournament

Just like that, Euro 2024 is over. After four weeks of drama-filled action, the European Championship trophy is heading back to Spain 12 years on from when they last clinched it.

La Roja reigned supreme in Berlin over England, to claim the trophy for a record fourth time, thanks to a late winner from Mike Oyarzabal.

Luis de la Fuente's side were the best team in the tournament by a stretch, winning all seven of their matches without needing penalties.

The likes of Rodri and Lamine Yamal, who won Player of the Tournament and Young Player of the Tournament, respectively, were dominant in a Spain side that just couldn't be beaten even by sides such as Italy, Germany, and France.

But despite their personal accolades for their displays, the Spanish pair have not made Sofascore's Euro 2024 Team of the Tournament.

In addition to Rodri and Yamal missing out, their opponents in the final on Sunday, England, do not have a single player in the 11, in spite of coming so close to European glory.

So, who did make the team? Here at Mail Sport, we take a look.

Goalkeeper: Mike Maignan

France's Mike Maignan is handed the gloves in this team, no arguments there. When you play a key part in the best defence of the tournament, you deserve a spot in the Team of the Tournament.

The 29-year-old conceded just three goals in six games as France made the semi-final. For all of his side's offensive woes, they were extremely solid at the back, and that includes Maignan.

The AC Milan keeper kept four clean sheets during the tournament, earning himself the Golden Glove. He also made a string of big saves, including two monster stops to deny Bruno Fernandes and Vitinha in their quarter-final victory over Portugal.

Right back: Joshua Kimmich

What can't this man do? Joshua Kimmich was the standout performer at right-back at his home Euros and by some distance.

Going forward he caused several problems down the right-hand side, notching up two assists in his five matches.

He also created 15 chances throughout the tournament, second only behind teen sensation Yamal.

He didn't miss a minute for the hosts in a side that up until the quarter-final were deemed one of the favourites for the competition after some dazzling displays.

But then they met Spain. No shame in losing to the eventual winners.

Centre back: Ruben Dias

Ruben Dias' performances went a little under the radar at the Euros but as he usually is, the Manchester City man was a rock at the back for Portugal on their run to the quarter-final.

The centre-back started four of Portugal's five matches, claiming clean sheets in three of them. The only match he missed was the sole match Portugal lost (excluding penalties), a 2-0 defeat to Georgia.

Portugal may have wanted to go further in the tournament, but Dias can be proud of his displays alongside a rejuvenated 41-year-old Pepe.

Centre back: Antonio Rudiger

Coming up against Antonio Rudiger is enough to scare the life into any striker. He is as intimidating as you can get in football and he showed his brilliance on numerous occasions at the heart of Germany's defence.

His Man of the Match display against Denmark showed exactly what he was about. He won his battles with Rasmus Hojlund all night and proved an immovable object despite everything the Danish threw at him.

Rudiger's crazy celebration to a clean tackle with just minutes to spare showed everything that is great about him. Germany were 2-0 up and he still went berserk due to the fact he wanted a clean sheet.

Left back: Marc Cucurella

Coming into the Euro 2024 not many people were expecting it but Spain's Marc Cucurella proved a revalation at the tournament.

After being lambasted during his two years at Chelsea for poor performances, the left-back showed exactly what he was made of in Germany with some superb performances in an all-conquering Spain team.

His greatest moment came with just four minutes of the tournament left to go, as he fired in a stunning low cross for Oyarzabal to slide home, in turn winning the Euros for Spain. Formerly a cult hero, he is now a star player.

Centre midifielder: Fabian Ruiz

Another Spaniard who surprised many with his brilliance was Fabian Ruiz. His rock solid partnership with Rodri in the middle of the park provided base for the scintillating display Spain supplied.

The PSG man netted twice in seven games as well as providing two assist for his teammates. Not only that, but Fabian also recovered possession in the final third 14 times - more than any other player.

When Rodri went off at half-time in the final against England, many believed the game would swing in the Three Lions' favour. But Fabian managed to shine brighter than he had before, filling the hole while continuing to aid the attackers.

Centre midfielder: Toni Kroos

Toni Kroos truly went out as the passmaster in his final international tournament. He may not have finished with the glory that he enjoyed with Real Madrid at the end of his club career, but he still closed his book on top of his game.

The German midfielder loves to ping passes around the pitch, and he did so with regularity at his home tournament.

In fact, he broke the group stage record for the most amount of passes completed at a European Championship, with 324.

Kroos only missed 10 minutes of action out of the five games, and if he really wanted to could probably play at that level for another few years. But he wants to go out on his own terms, and that is what he has done.

Right winger: Bernardo Silva

Now this is where you would expect Yamal to be after the dazzling displays he provided throughout the summer, but he is pipped to a spot on the right by Portugal's Bernardo Silva.

The Manchester City man was one of Portugal's standout performers in a tournament that promised so much but did not quite deliver.

The midfielder had never scored a major tournament goal for his country prior to this Euros, but he finally got that weight off his back when he netted against Turkey in the group stage.

Attacking midfielder: Dani Olmo

When Pedri went down injured in Spain's quarter-final with Germany after just seven minutes, anxiety gripped the nation as they knew they were losing one of their brightest talents.

But then came on Dani Olmo, and my word did he make a positive impact. The attacking midfielder took his opportunity with both hands by scoring and assisting against the hosts and never looked back.

Another goal followed in the semi-final against France, adding to his solitary strike in the group stage, ensuring he walked away with the Golden Boot alongside six others.

Olmo also made a goal-line clearance against England in the final with just one minute left on the clock and the celebration for that was bigger than any of his goals. His performances in Germany may just earn him a big money move in the summer.

Left winger: Cody Gakpo

Cody Gakpo loves an international tournament. His displays at the 2022 World Cup enticed Liverpool into splashing the cash on him in December of the same year, and the winger showed what he is all about yet again at Euro 2024.

The Dutchman was another player to end the tournament with a Golden Boot in his grasp, scoring three goals as the Netherlands reached the semi-finals before being knocked out by England.

The only European to score more goals than Cody Gakpo's six across the last two major tournaments is Kylian Mbappe. The Liverpool man loves banging them in for the Netherlands.

Striker: Kylian Mbappe

Don't scratch your eyes, you are reading this correctly. Kylian Mbappe received the highest rating of any striker at Euro 2024, despite underwhelming on several occasions in Germany.

Regarded as one of the world's best players, Mbappe struggled to hit the heights that were expected of him at the Euros, only scoring one goal in the tournament and it was via the penalty spot.

After injuring his nose in the tournament opener, you could pin some blame on the mask that he had to wear for many games. But even with that in his locker, Mbappe admitted himself that he was not good enough.

'In football, you're good or not good. I wasn't good. My Euro was a failure,' Said Mbappe. It was good enough to get in this team, though, Kylian.
