Bryan Gil joins Girona on a season-long loan deal as the Tottenham outcast replaces Savinho after the Brazilian signed for Man City

  • Bryan Gil has completed a season-long loan move to Spanish side Girona
  • The rarely used Tottenham forward will undergo his third loan spell in LaLiga
  • Gil has made just 43 appearances since joining Spurs in a £23m deal in 2021

Girona have announced the capture of Bryan Gil from Tottenham on a season-long loan deal as the 23-year-old moves back to Spain for the third time in three years.

The LaLiga side have identified Gil as a replacement for Brazilian forward Savinho who recently joined Man City as their first summer signing in a £21m deal.

Gil previously spent time playing at both Valencia and Sevilla and will compete in the Champions League with Girona next season - a competition Spurs failed to qualify for.

Ange Postecoglou has deemed him surplus to requirements for another season with Gil previously joining in a £23m deal three years ago but has only made 43 appearances for the club.

The two-time Europa League winner is contracted to Spurs until 2025 and appears set to leave as a free agent next year after struggling in England's top-flight under different Tottenham managers.

Gil was previously signed from Sevilla under the current Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo who endured a short stint in charge before being sacked and Antonio Conte succeeding him.

The Spain international was bought in a player-plus-cash deal that also saw Erik Lamela move in the other direction, but has largely underwhelmed and struggled to make the grade in the Premier League.

Gil's most successful season at the North London club came during the first half of last season where he made 11 Premier League appearances and also featured in the FA Cup.

To date he has made 24 appearances in England's top-flight, starting just four of those and is yet to score a goal for the club.

Spurs boss Postecoglou previously heaped praise on Gil last season at a time when he was battling an injury crisis, stating in February: 'Bryan is a fantastic young player.

'He works so hard to improve every day and this first half of the year he's had a couple of injuries.

'He missed out on that but he wants to improve, loves the environment and we love having him part of the group. He's still a young player with plenty of time to develop.'
