Lee Carsley is 'likely to be made England's interim boss for Nations League matches next month' - as permanent successor to Gareth Southgate drags on

  • Lee Carsley will reportedly take charge of the games against Ireland and Finland
  • Last summer Carsley won the under-21s European Championship with England
  • He has been one of the leading contenders for the role alongside Eddie Howe

Lee Carsley is reportedly in the driving seat to take interim charge of England for their Nations League games in September.

The Three Lions take on Ireland and Finland early in the month as they kick off their campaign in the competition's second tier.

Carsley is among the chief contenders to succeed Gareth Southgate, who stepped down in July just days after losing the Euro 2024 final.

The former Everton star has managed England's Under-21s since 2021 and won the age group's European Championship last summer.

He is in pole position to get a test drive in the senior job over the coming weeks, according to The Telegraph

Carsley has a strong record in his current role, having won 23 of 29 matches in charge of the youngsters.

Promoting Luis de la Fuente from the youth set-up worked wonders for Spain at the Euros and Carsley has experience managing the likes of Cole Palmer, Anthony Gordon, and Marc Guehi.

It is conventional for the under-21s boss to step into the hot seat while FA chiefs search for a successor.

Eddie Howe, Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, and Thomas Tuchel were among the names touted alongside Carsley in the wake of Southgate's resignation.

The FA's board has given approval for foreign managers to be considered, The Guardian reported on Monday.

Anyone hoping for Jurgen Klopp will have to put their dreams on ice after the ex-Liverpool boss said this week that he will 'rule out' management for now

'It would be the biggest loss of face in the history of football if I said, “I'll make an exception for you now,”' he said.

Carsley, 50, won 40 caps for the Republic of Ireland.

England face the Boys in Green on September 7 in Dublin before facing Finland three days later at Wembley.

It is expected that the interim boss would have the opportunity to name the squad, and thus England cannot leave the appointment until the last minute.
