Carlos Alcaraz tears up in emotional scenes after losing thrilling 2024 Olympic gold medal tennis match to Novak Djokovic

Carlos Alcaraz broke down in tears when his gold medal dreams were dashed by Novak Djokovic.

In emotional scenes after the Serbian tennis star completed the coveted Golden Slam on Sunday, Alcaraz started crying on the court at the 2024 Paris Games.

Djokovic, playing in his fifth Olympics, defeated the 21-year-old 7-6 (3) 7-6 (2) in the men's singles final.

However, fans were quick to comfort the Spanish tennis by assuring him the gold medal could still be in his future.

'His time will come. He will be one of the best ever. But so hard seeing the tears,' one fan wrote on X.

'You played a hell of a match but it was not meant to be. Your gold is coming in 2028,' another chimed in.

A third chimed in, 'Tough luck today Carlos you are a very special player your time will come soon,' while another echoed the sentiment, 'It's only his first Olympics and a silver at his first is pretty great too.'

Djokovic became just the fifth player in tennis history to win the Golden Slam as a singles player after his victory in the City of Love.

The 24-time Grand Slam winner had previously won 10 Australian Opens, seven Wimbledon titles, four US Opens and three French Opens.

However a bronze medal in Beijing during the 2008 Games was his best Olympic result until this weekend.

The only other players to have won all four Grand Slam singles titles and an Olympic gold in singles are Rafael Nadal, Andre Agassi, Steffi Graf and Serena Williams - who was in the crowd during the match against Alcaraz.

While the Spanish superstar will likely get plenty more chances to go for gold, 2024 was probably Djokovic's final shot at Olympic glory.

Speaking to Eurosport after his victory, Djokovic said, 'It was an incredible fight and I had to play my best tennis.'

He went on, 'I put my heart, my soul, everything to win gold. I did it for my country first - for Serbia.'
