Anya Taylor-Joy reveals her husband Malcolm McRae 'accidentally' proposed to her at iconic location from one of her favorite films, Forrest Gump

Anya Taylor-Joy revealed new details about her secretive relationship with her husband Malcolm McRae on Monday in a chat with her Furiosa costar Chris Hemsworth for the movie-rating social media site Letterboxd.

After Anya, 28, and Chris, 40, revealed four of their favorite films, the Furiosa lead admitted that one of her picks, Forrest Gump, had a surprising connection to her engagement to McRae, whom she wed in October in Venice.

According to the Miami-born actress, her 30-year-old musician husband proposed to her at the location of the bench that Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) sits on while recounting his picaresque tale.

'Forrest Gump, I love that movie, I miss movies like that,' Anya enthused. 'Just huge, epic sagas where you just feel every emotion under the sun and there’s like this beautiful poetry underneath it. I love it.'

Chris keyed up Anya's story, suggesting that he may have already heard the tale.

'Did something special happen on the Forrest Gump bench?' he inquired.

'Yes. My husband accidentally proposed to me on the Forrest Gump bench in Savannah,' she shared.

'Complete accident and he’s a boy from Alabama. And I’m blonde. So just, just happened,' she explained. 'I hear that music and I cry like a baby.'

The bus stop bench from which Forrest recounted his travels and adventures was a prop for the film, and that bench has since been placed in the Georgia's Savannah History Museum.

However, a bench was added in its place, and the location has since become a popular spot for tourists and fans of the film, which grossed $678 million dollars against a $55 million budget.

It went on to win six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director (for Robert Zemeckis), Best Actor for Hanks, Best Adapted Screenplay for Eric Roth, Best Visual Effects and Best Editing.

In addition to Forrest Gump, Anya named Hook (1991), Almost Famous (2000) and Interview With A Vampire (1994) as some of her favorite films.

Chris previously listed It's A Wonderful Life (1946), Labyrtinth (1986), The NeverEnding Story (1984) and The Princess Bride (1987) as four of his favorites.

Anya and her husband Malcolm were spotted on Sunday at the Monaco Grand Prix as they packed on some PDA.

Anya has rarely spoken about their relationship since they were first spotted together in New York in early 2021.

They have managed to maintain a healthy relationship despite living on opposite sides of the Atlantic, with Anya largely based in London, while Malcolm, who also acts as well as playing in a band, lives in the US.

Speaking about their relationship to British Vogue in March 2022, Anya said: 'I said to my partner the other day that he was my hobby. I see reading as something that I have to do. He loved it because he’s the same.

'I’ve finally found someone who will happily sit in silence with me reading. We’re basically 80 years old and seven at the same time and it works really well.'

Speaking about the distance, she added: 'Yes, it is [hard], but it’s also kind of great because when you’re together you’re really valuing the time that you have.

'Everyday mundane activities are so full of joy. I love going to the petrol station with him and filling up.'

Anya was born in Miami, Florida, and she moved to Buenos Aires as a toddler before relocating to London at the age of six 'for political reasons' with her parents, banker father Dennis — a Scot born in South America — and Spanish–English mother Jennifer, who hails from Zambia.

Her role as orphaned chess prodigy Beth Harmon in the Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit elevated her into one of the most in demand actresses in Hollywood.

She subsequently bagged a Golden Globe for Best Actress and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Miniseries or Television Movie.

She received another Golden Globe nomination for her role in black comedy movie The Menu, which she starred in alongside Nicholas Hoult and Ralph Fiennes, and she most recently plays the title character in the blockbuster action film Furiosa, a prequel to 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road.

Early box office figures show Furiosa barely edged out The Garfield Movie to win this coveted Memorial Day weekend.

Furiosa topped the box office with an estimated $32 million for the Memorial Day holiday weekend, Deadline reports, with The Garfield Movie just behind at $31.1 million.

The showing is set to be the lowest Memorial Day weekend at the box office in 29 years, since Casper topped the box office in late May 1995 with $22 million, not counting the 2020 box office when cinemas were closed due to the COVID-19 lockdown.
