She rose to fame as a pop diva of the 1990s.

And Macy Gray stunned fans on Friday with a distinctive new look.

The 56-year-old appeared on Seven's Sunrise via video link and was barely recognisable as the same star who wowed fans with her style more than two decades ago.

Appearing ahead off her tour Down Under next month, Macy's latest look consisted of a bright red mop of hair, a pair of blue denim overalls and a paisley shirt.

During the interview Macy made the stunning revelation that she was against releasing her 1999 mega hit I Try as a single.

She explained that she thought she had catchier songs.

'I argued with my label but luckily they didn't listen to me,' she said.

The pop song ultimately reached number one on the charts in Australia and was a top five hit in the U.S. and made the top ten in the U.K.

Macy added the song's hit status went on to 'change everything' for her.

It comes after Gray revealed the challenging experience she had during her appearance on The Masked Singer Australia.

Earlier this month, the hit maker told KIIS FM's The Kyle and Jackie O show that wearing the heavy mask on the show was very difficult.

She also joked that the heavy head may have given her 'brain damage'.

They are so heavy and they are heavy on your head. I could have brain damage and I wouldn't know,' she told hosts Kyle Sandilands and Jackie 'O' Henderson.

Jackie, who was a judge on the show, agreed adding: 'I tried on one of those masks backstage and I couldn't believe how heavy they were.'

One of the show's judges Dave 'Hughesy' Hughes said at the time Macy had 'refused to leave' despite being told it was time to take off her mask and say goodbye.

'Macy Gray had such passion for The Masked Singer that when she was told that she had to leave the show, which you saw last night, she refused to leave the show,' the comedian said on 2Day FM's Morning Crew.

'She said, "No, I'm continuing in the show," and there had to be a discussion which went for quite a while as to, "No, you have to leave." She said, "No, I'm not leaving."

'The thing is, we can't do the end of the show unless the head comes off.'

Co-host Ed Kavalee then said: 'So, she still had the head on, and they're saying, "Hey, Macy-slash-Atlantis, we need you to take the head off so you can go."

'[And] she's responding, "No I'm keeping the head on"?'

Fellow anchor Erin Molan then speculated that Macy wanted to stay on the show longer to secure a bigger payday.

'I don't know the contractual situation…' Hughesy responded, adding that Macy took a lot of convincing before she agreed to take her mask off and leave.

Meanwhile, Macy will begin her 25th anniversary tour celebrating the release of her 1999 debut album On How Life Is in July.

The Grammy Award winner will play shows in Hobart, Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, the Gold Coast, and Canberra.
