Margot Robbie previously revealed she wanted to have 'tons of children' but didn't want her career to get in the way.

The Aussie actress, 34, is reportedly expecting her first child with husband Tom Ackerley, also 34, with MailOnline's exclusive photos showing the star proudly displaying her small, but visible baby bump last week.

Yet motherhood has been on Margot's mind for years, as an unearthed interview from 2016 revealed.

Speaking to Sunday Style eight years ago, Margot confessed: 'I want tons of children!

'Well, maybe not too many. I grew up in a family of four [kids], so that sounds like a good number.’

However, she insisted she was in no rush to start making babies, as she didn't want her family to suffer as a result of her movie career.

‘I know that once I have kids, they’ll be my priority, so I want to do the family thing later,’ she said.

Margot previously insisted she’d only have a baby when she was ready after becoming ‘sick’ of people asking – as reports suggest she is now expecting her first child

While promoting her movie Mary Queen of Scots in 2019 she told The Times: 'I got married, and the first question in almost every interview is "Babies? When are you having one?' I'm so angry that there's this social contract",

'You're married, now have a baby. Don't presume. I'll do what I'm going to do.'

Margot and Tom married in her native Australia in 2016 and instead of settling down to family life right away as she admitted was expected, they have spent the first eight years of marriage focused on their careers.

The couple met while working on Suite Française in 2013, where he was an assistant director and she was in front of the camera.

Together, Margot and Tom have produced films including the Academy Award-winning I, Tonya and Promising Young Woman, as well as the 2023 blockbusters Saltburn and Barbie, all under their LuckyChap Entertainment banner.

Last year the actress admitted  she was just as stunned as everyone else when Barbie made it big at the global box office.

Amassing an incredible $1.4billion, Greta Gerwig's comedy about the 1959 Mattel Barbie doll held its own against Christopher Nolan's biopic Oppenheimer

Margot told Variety she was shocked at the online cultural impact the movies had on their opening weekend.

'The fact that people were going and being like, "Oh, watch Oppenheimer first, then Barbie." I was like, "See? People like everything." People are weird,' she said.

Turns out the hilarious memes about Barbie battling the 'father of the atomic bomb' J. Robert Oppenheimer were all thanks to Margot.

Interviewing for Variety's Actors on Actors with Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy, Margot revealed she was the mastermind behind the double billing known as Barbenheimer.

The Aussie actor recalled the moment Oppenheimer producer Chuck Rove called her and said, 'I think you guys should move your date' after the two movies were slated to release on July 21.

'And I was like, "We're not moving our date. If you're scared to be up against us, then you move your date",' Margot explained.

'And he's like, "We're not moving our date. I just think it'd be better for you to move." And I was like, "We're not moving!" I think this is a really great pairing, actually. It's a perfect double billing, Oppenheimer and Barbie.'

Irish actor Cillian, 47, told Robbie: 'That was a good instinct.'

The odd pairing clearly worked based on the sheer amount of hilarious memes that went viral leading up to the release of the two films.

People are so clever. People kept asking me, "So is each marketing department talking to each other?" And I was like, "No, this is the world doing this! This is not a part of the marketing campaign",' Margot said.

Cillian replied: 'And I think it happened because both movies were good. In fact, that summer, there was a huge diversity of stuff in the cinema, and I think it just connected in a way that you or I or the studios or anybody could never have predicted.'
