Hugh Jackman congratulates Canada after their shock Women's Rugby Sevens win over Australia in Paris - and a very familiar name scores the winning points

Hugh Jackman took to social media on Wednesday to congratulate Canada's Women's team for their shock Rugby Sevens win over Australia at the Paris Olympics.

The Wolverine star, 55, posted a photo to Instagram of Canada's Piper Logan, 23, moments after she scored the winning points against Australia.

He captioned it with some heartfelt and hilarious words: 'Well done Canada. At least Logan scored the winning try.' 

Jackman's sweet post referred to Logan's surname being the same as the first name of his iconic Marvel character, who he recently played in the blockbuster Deadpool and Wolverine.

Jackman also shared a photo of Australia competing against Canada in the heart-stopping match and captioned it with some cheeky words.

'I know the gig is up. We really are friends, but can we start a new rivalry here?' he said.

It comes after he broke down in tears as he celebrated his latest box office hit.

Reading the news on his phone in a video posted to Twitter on Monday, Hugh first chuckled to himself before exclaiming, 'oh my God'. 

Happy tears began flowing as the revelation sunk in, as he swatted away the droplets before exhaling a deep sigh. 

Hugh additionally shared the news to his Instagram, writing, 'Wolverine and Deadpool is the #1 movie in the world. Thank you ALL!'

He posted the caption alongside a graphic of his character, Wolverine, laying on a couch looking at a framed image that read, 'Number one movie in the world'.

Deadpool & Wolverine took in AU $10million at the domestic box office on its opening weekend, making it the highest grossing R-rated weekend opening of all time, while pulling in AU $668.45 million globally - far beyond industry expectations. 

The star recently revealed how his children Oscar and Ava inspired him to reprise his iconic Marvel superhero role in Deadpool & Wolverine.

He first played Wolverine in the 2000 movie X-Men and has since appeared in several sequels and spin-offs.
