Hollywood star Zac Efron is making plans to build a 'sustainable' home on a property on the New South Wales north coast.

The 36-year-old High School Musical actor bought the bushland getaway near Byron Bay for $2million in 2020.

A development application has been made to build an off the grid 'zero waste' six-bedroom two-storey pad on the 128hectare spread for $2.685million.

Efron's name was not on the application paperwork, which was lodged with the Tweed Shire council.

Instead, Joost Bakker, an environmental activist and friend of the star, was named on the documents as the 'proponent' of the DA.

But Efron's name was still used as title holder on the property, reported the The Daily Telegraph on Thursday.

Bakker, a former florist, is a well known environmental activist and designer and often features content related to sustainable housing on his frequent social media posts.

Efron's spread is located in rugged bushland near Tomewin, 25kms inland from well-known beach holiday spot Coolangatta and 75kms from Byron Bay.

The plans propose a sprawling off grid home which will include a gym and will have a design known as 'carbon sequestering'. This is a process that helps to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Dubbed the 'Futurecave', the ultra-modern dwelling is designed by Frank Burridge of Main Studio architects and will consist of 'pods' connected by a walkway.

Providing 830 square metres of space for the home, the pods used in construction are made from hemp board panels.

Features include a 'green roof' for plant life. It will also provide a 'haven' for butterflies and fireflies.

According to the report Efron's land is in a rain forest area and boasts three creeks and waterfalls.

The Disaster Artist star bought the land when he was in Australia during the COVID lockdown.

It comes after Efron has insisted he is 'happy and healthy' after being hospitalised over the weekend after taking a dive into a pool while holidaying in Ibiza.

He took 'a large amount of water into his lungs' after he made contact with the bottom of the pool.

The leading man had 'showed signs of distress' and was 'momentarily dazed' in the wake of the incident, sources told the outlet, at which point security officials rushed in to assist him.

The Ibiza accident comes 11 years after a near-death experience which saw the star slipping in a puddle of water while running in socks in his home.

He then smashed his chin into a granite fountain, leaving his chin bone 'hanging off his face'.

Zac later told Entertainment Tonight that he nearly died after the freak injury, explaining: 'It was funny. It sucks. I almost died, but we're good.'

The movie star famously claimed the accident caused his changing appearance, which in recent years has caused a flurry of speculation that he has undergone cosmetic surgery.

Zac has always denied he has had any plastic surgery, instead insisting the masseter muscles on the inside of his face and jaw 'compensated' for his 2013 injury, leading to his changed shape.

The High School Musical star even claimed he didn't know his transformation had gone viral on social media until his mother told him about the plastic surgery rumours.

Despite all his efforts to dispel the whispers, Zac has been hit with fresh accusations recently after fans watched his most recent hit, A Family Affair.
