Tom Cruise puts on a very animated display as he celebrates the USA women's football team winning gold at the Paris Olympics

Tom Cruise put on a very animated display as he cheered on the United States women's football team during their historic gold medal match at the Paris Olympics on Saturday.

The Hollywood star, 62, couldn't contain his excitement as his country topped the podium in the sport for the first time since 2012.

Throwing his muscular arms up enthusiastically and shouting as the team scored their first goal, Tom was every inch the perfect cheerleader as he applauded from the stands.

The Mission: Impossible star looked suave for the outing at Parc des Princes as he donned a white polo shirt teamed with tailored grey trousers.

He completed his Olympics look with a pair of dark aviator shades, similar the ones he's often seen wearing in his action movies.

Throughout the all-important game, the actor switched between sitting and standing as the tense scenes unfolded.

At one point, Tom gripped onto the metal bar in front of him as leaned over to a closer view of the action.

When the USA team scored and the stadium erupted into cheers, the Hollywood star was quick to jump to his feet and applaud.

He seemed to be in high spirits at the event and kept stopping to wave at fans, pose for selfies and sign autographs as a crowd formed around him.

The high-profile football match saw the United States defeat a tough Brazilian side 1-0 on a Mallory Swanson goal in the 57th minute.

The gold-medal winning goal came on an assist from Korbin Albert who passed the ball to the forwards, who had gotten behind the Brazilian defense.

And the soccer match isn't Tom's first appearance at the Paris Olympics - it comes after the star cheered on Simone Biles in the women's gymnastics and later watched a swimming relay event.

Cheers echoed for him as he made his show-stopping entrance and blew kisses to the crowd.

He was also spotted taking selfies with fans and even giving Lady Gaga a hug, after she performed during the Opening Ceremonies.

His Paris getaway comes just a few weeks after he was spotted at Wimbledon, seated just a few spots down from fellow A-lister Julia Roberts.

The actor has lived in London since 2021, nearly a decade after he split from his third wife Katie Holmes.

Earlier this month, he was spotted filming a death-defying aerial sequence for the eighth Mission: Impossible movie, which currently doesn't have a title.

The film reunites the actor, who plays spy Ethan Hunt, with longtime collaborator Christopher McQuarrie, who has directed the last four M:I movies.

He will also reunite with longtime co-stars Ving Rhames, who has starred alongside Cruise in every M:I movie as Luther Stickell, and Simon Pegg, whose Benji Dunn debuted in 2006's Mission: Impossible III.

Also returning is Henry Czerny (Eugene Kittridge), Vanessa Kirby (The White Widow), Pom Klementieff (Paris), Hayley Atwell (Grace), Shea Whigham (Jasper Briggs), Esai Morales (Gabriel) and Frederick Schmidt (Zola Mitsopolis).

Franchise newcomers include Hannah Waddingham, Nick Offerman, Katy O'Brian, Indira Varma, Holt McCallany and Janet McTeer.

Cruise is also set to reunite with his Edge of Tomorrow and American Made director Doug Liman for what would be a historic project, teaming up with Space X.

The untitled film - which Cruise and Liman wrote with McQuarrie - would be the first in Hollywood history to be actually filmed in outer space.

He also had a highly-anticipated sequel to Edge of Tomorrow in development though there is no indication when that may move forward.

The actor also has another McQuarrie film - The Gauntlet - in pre-production, starring alongside Scarlett Johansson.

The host nation, led by rising star and reigning NBA Rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama, had an impressive tournament and cut the USA's lead to just three late in the game - but a cast of LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry ultimately proved too much.

Curry, who finished the game with a team-high 24 points, caught fire in the latter stages of the game as he hit four three-pointers from the 2:48 mark on to see the Americans to the gold.
