Later she got in front of the floral backdrop with her new husband Liam Hemsworth, 29, who wore head-to-toe black.

Meanwhile, selfie-obsessed Instagram stars Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez flouted Anna Wintour's social media ban.

Professional photos taken inside the New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art show the two celebrities posing for a pouty snap together with their partners.

Lopez's fifth fiance Alex Rodriguez took the shot while Kim's third husband Kanye West joined in too.

Wintour is widely reported to have a 'no phones' rule at the event, but many celebrities couldn't resists posting photos and video on social media.

The invitation-only event, famed for its A-list celebrities and haute couture gowns, is a benefit for museum and also marks the opening of the Costume Institute's annual fashion exhibit.

Jennifer was decked out in a glittering silver fringe dress and matching headdress by Versace, while her man wore a black and powder pink tuxedo from the same fashion house.

Meanwhile, Kim slipped into a drenched-theme see-through Thierry Mugler ensemble that she revealed to Vogue took roughly 'eight months' to put together.

Kanye, who is known as a fashion maven and shoe designer as well as a rapper, went for a sedate ensemble featuring a Dickies jacket and matching charcoal trousers.

Alex gleefully disregarded the anti-selfie stricture, smiling for a photo with Jennifer and his pal Jimmy Fallon as they wandered through the exhibit arranged by Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton.

In a perfect nod to its camp theme, the 2019 Met Gala featured a performance from pop icon Cher, who has been turning heads at 'fashion's biggest night' for more than 40 years.

As seen on several ceelbrities' Insta Stories, Cher took the stage in a skintight see-through bodysuit with a swirling print - reminiscent of the legendary Bob Mackie number she wore to the 1974 Met Gala.

Cher was accompanied by a fleet of backup performers for a rendition of her smash hit 1998 single Believe, which got the famous faces in the crowd - such as Ashley Graham - standing up and dancing along.

The music diva and Oscar-winning actress, who recently released an ABBA cover album, also performed the Swedish band's song Waterloo during her set at the Met Ball.

She threw a black leather jacket over her bodysuit for her performance, which took place in front of a brick archway that was lit up pink and blue as she sang in front of it.

In addition to the translucent bodysuit, Cher's looks included a black blazer with a lace-trimmed pink blouse over a pair of casual faded jeans and a pink top.

The blouse was by Givenchy, the jacket by Ann Demeulemeester, the jeans - which had Jolly Rogers embroidered onto them - by Relax and her shoes by Rene Caovilla.

While the bodysuit had been accompanied by a blue and black wig, the star look came with a platinum blonde hairdo that brought back the 1980s.

Celebs sat down at tables during Cher's performance - as seen on Alex' Insta Stories, he was placed near Kylie and Kendall while desserts were served to the guests.

As Gwen showed her Instagram following on her Stories, Lady Gaga also spoke onstage during the Met Ball after cutting a showstopping figure on the pink carpet.

She was introducing her Haus Of Gaga dancers, who had accompanied her on the red carpet and who enraptured the audience by thundering through some energetic choreography onstage.

Zac Posen's Insta Stories offered a glimpse at some of the fun outside the event as well - Katie Holmes and her beau Jamie Foxx, as well as Andrew Garfield and Nina Dobrev, all danced in a party automobile together.

Inside the invite-only Met Gala: Anna Wintour approves the guest list... and stars pay $35,000 per seat

The annual Met Gala extravaganza raises money for the museum's Costume Institute kicks off the Met's annual major fashion exhibition -- look out, because the theme is 'camp.'

And the more outrageous the outfit, the better for the Met Gala red carpet, where the A-listers strut their stuff, usually in the most eye-popping ensemble they can find to match the theme.

Last year, Rihanna showed up in full papal-esque regalia, and Madonna wore a regal black gown - with a see-through cross in the bodice - to go along with the 'Heavenly Bodies' concept.

Want a seat? They go for $35,000 a piece.

Attendance is by invitation only, and word has it that Vogue editor extraordinaire Anna Wintour has the final say over each person on the guest list.

Organizers did reveal a smattering of names last month -- members of the so-called 'host committee' -- and so expect to see Jennifer Lopez, Bradley Cooper, Katy Perry and Priyanka Chopra.

Wintour co-chairs the event this year with an eclectic mix of boldface names -- Gucci designer Alessandro Michele, pop diva Lady Gaga, British singer Harry Styles and tennis superstar Serena Williams.

Met Gala 2019 theme: So what does 'Notes on Camp' mean...?

Lady Gaga's dream theme! The pop star embraced 'camp' on the Met Gala red carpet

Lady Gaga's dream theme! The pop star embraced 'camp' on the Met Gala red carpet

So what exactly is 'camp'?

The museum's exhibition is based on 'Notes on Camp,' an essay written in 1964 by American author Susan Sontag.

'Camp is by nature subversive (...) confronting and challenging the status quo,' the Costume Institute's head curator Andrew Bolton said Monday at a press event about the exhibition before the gala.

'In the end, the purpose of camp is to put a smile on our faces and a warm glow in our hearts.'

Some of the items in the exhibition might best explain the theme: the 'swan dress' worn by Bjork to the Oscars, a glittering costume worn by flamboyant US singer Liberace, a shower head necklace designed by the late Karl Lagerfeld for Chloe in the 1980s.

'We're experiencing a resurgence of camp -- not just in fashion, but in culture in general,' said Bolton.

'Camp tends to come to the fore in moments of social and political instability. The 1960s was one such moment as were the 1980s.'

The exhibition 'Camp: Notes on Fashion' -- a play on the title of Sontag's essay -- formally opens at the Met on Thursday and runs through September 8.
