Madonna joins Meek Mill and Jay Z in star-studded movement to provide PPE to prisons as she donates 100,000 masks
She's been criticized for her tone-deaf Instagram posts amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Now Madonna has stepped up to help those less fortunate than herself, joining in a star-studded effort to provide essential PPE, personal protective equipment, to prisons.
The singer has signed up for the Reform Alliance alongside stars such as Jay Z, Meek Mill and Bob Kraft. Their aim is to protect prison inmates and staff, who cannot socially distance because of the conditions in correction facilities.
Doing her bit: Madonna, seen last year, has joined Meek Mill and Jay Z's star-studded movement to provide PPE to prisons; she donated 100,000 masks
Madonna's Ray Of Light Foundation will be providing the nonprofit with 100,000 masks to distribute to those in need, according to TMZ.
The masks are already allocated with 50,000 masks set for the Cook County Jail and the Illinois Department of Corrections, which has been hard hit by the pandemic, with seven dead and hundreds infected.
The rest of the shipment will see 20,000 masks sent to the Louisiana Department of Corrections, and 30,000 split between three further destinations - Vacaville Prison in California, FCI Ray Brook in New York and Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department in Massachusetts.
Making donations: Meek Mill is one of a long list of stars to take action to help those in prison
Charity work: Jaz Z has also made a donation to the cause
Madonna's charitable donation comes after she was criticized for her tone-deaf Instagram 'quarantine diary'. This saw her post updates from a milk bath, complain about being 'over it' and dance around her luxury mansion.
However she has done her bit to help in the fight against the virus. Her latest donation joins a $1million donation to the Gates Philanthropy Partners' COVID-19 Therapeutics Accelerator, which she gave in order to help find a cure for coronavirus.
In a lengthy statement shared to her website Madona.com, the pop star, 61, said she is 'so impressed by the work of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation' that she wants to contribute to the cause.
