Barbecue fans have been left fuming after a food blogger suggested swapping out hot dogs for carrots.

The TikTok clip sent meat-lovers into meltdown when users were asked: "What would happen if I invited you over for a cookout and served you a carrot in a bun? Would you notice?" The post included a link to a TikTok recipe video which only enraged hungry herbivores even more.

One raged: "Not going to lie, if I ever go round to someone's house for tea and they make me a carrot in a roll, I will call the police immediately."

Another fumed: "No, because if I knew I had a friend who would do that I wouldn't show up." One confused user wrote: "Then I would feel bad because I would've realised that carrots are better than the ground up hog bones and human DNA that is hot dogs. So I'm really confused by your question to be honest."

A third user even joked it was a "good way to get smacked" at a cookout. However, some users were willing to give the carrot dogs a go, saying they would.

One unconvinced social media user confessed: "It might even be alright, but I'd still be mildly irritated unless it was hella better than I expect it to be."

Others joked they would "call the police" if anyone served this at a barbecue when expecting a regular hot dog, with one writing: "Not going to lie, if I ever go round to someone's house for tea and they make me a carrot in a roll, I will call the police immediately."

However, one user who tried the hotdog swap-out said it can be delicious if prepared correctly: "During my vegan days, made a killer carrot dog, but simmered the carrots in highly seasoned liquid, then cooked over wood smoked grill. Once topped with goodies, no real difference.

"They added: "Eating real dogs now, but I've got some vegan skills. Most don't season/cook properly. Focus on the flavours and textures if you're doing vegan food. Most recipes are terrible. Break it down to basic components and it's easy to replicate delicious and scrumptious food veganised."
