Elon Musk has taken to his platform X to gloat as social media goes into meltdown.

Amid a worldwide outage of Meta's sites Facebook and Instagram, the SpaceX and Tesla mogul wrote: "If you're reading this post, it's because our servers are working."

The post attracted 3.1m views in 15 minutes and 19,000 comments - many featuring comedy memes of Musk and social media rival and Meta owner, Mark Zuckerberg.

It comes as the Meta Quest headsets and Threads app are also impacted by the outage leaving users unable to login.

According to Down Detector the issues started at around 3pm, with both sites and smartphone apps refusing to work. Within minutes, more than 40,000 reports of issues were made to the site for both Instagram and Facebook.

Users flocked to the other working social media site Twitter/X, with one writing: "Facebook and Instagram down? is it the end of the world." And a second commented: "FACEBOOK, MESSENGER & INSTAGRAM DOWN???? IS THIS THE END OF THE WORLD?".

A third wrote: "Bet that this is how the apocalypse starts. LOL." Despite the chaos, no comments have been made by Meta as to what has been going on behind the scenes.

Reddit was filled with people raging about the outage too as speculation mounted.

A Meta spokesperson said: "We're aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now."
