This closely follows the disappearance of a retired police officer, who vanished while on a solo hike amid scorching temperatures on the Greek island of Amorgos.

American Eric Calibet, 59, set off on his walk a little after 7am on Tuesday, June 11 from the port settlement of Aegiali.

It’s understood he was on his way to Katapola, the island’s main port situated on the western side. The trek should have taken four hours, however Calibet still hadn’t returned after eight hours, so a worried friend reported him missing.

A search operation was launched on the Tuesday afternoon with additional support from Naxos island. Police attempted to locate the ex-copper’s last known whereabouts through mobile phone data, and have not been able to make contact with Calibet on either of his two mobile phones.

Calibet’s dissapearance comes just days after TV doctor Micheal Mosely was found dead on the Island of Symi.

In similar circumstances, Mosely, who was holidaying with his wife Clare when he went missing, set off for a walk in 40C heat on Wednesday.

Five days later, following an extensive search involving helicopters, drones, fire-fighters, island locals and the 67-year-old’s four children, the medic’s body was found near the village of Pedi.

It’s believed Mosley took a wrong while on the walk and tragically collapsed just 30 minutes away from the village.

An initial post-mortem concluded he had died of natural causes.
