A roll of kitchen paper that suddenly "turned brown overnight" has left Reddit users baffled.

Taking to the r/CasualUK subreddit, user JAMBOBUBLLE tried to figure out why their roll of kitchen paper had changed colour overnight. They shared an image of the roll, showing it discoloured from its typical plain look.

With no obvious explanation, Reddit users guessed it could be down to anything from an elaborate prank to a gas leak in the home.

The original poster said their flatmates claimed the roll "used to be white", although they admitted those living at the property could be suffering from "mass delusion".

One user suggested the housemates were "f**king with" the original poster, but this was dismissed as "no one is genius enough in this house for this calibre of prank". Another user suggested: "Carbon monoxide poisoning is making you hallucinate."

Other users also pointed to a possible poisoning, with the original poster admitting they "didn't know" what the signs of a gas leak were. "One of the reasons I posted this was in case I'm the only person who didn't know that a sign of a chemical or gas leak was kitchen roll turning brown," they wrote.

Carbon monoxide poisoning can cause yellowish or brown stains on walls and other surfaces, and several Reddit users thought best to warn the original poster. One person wrote: "For everyone's safety you cant smell/taste that stuff. And it can kill you. Get onto the gas engineers/supplier. And if its not that you may look silly, feel stupid but its a life or death situation if it is a leak. You potentially saved your lives."

Others questioned whether the strength of the paper had changed at all and said spots of "fluid damage" could be seen, suggesting the paper could have been dunked in "something brown!" The poster replied: "I gripped the top of the roll with a damp hand so I could rip a square off but that wouldn't have soaked the entire thing. I may be in my head now but it does feel less soft."
