Dillon Danis has highlighted Logan Paul’s 'smart use of Vaseline' as he opened up about his farcical Misfits Boxing fight.

MMA star Danis turned in an abject display during his co-main event showdown with Paul at Manchester’s AO Arena on Saturday. Danis, who had cruelly taunted Paul’s fiancée in the build-up, threw just nine punches during the fight which ended in chaotic scenes as he tried what appeared to be a jiu-jitsu move on his opponent.

That led to his disqualification with security guards flooding the ring to keep the fighters apart. Danis’s display, plus general conduct before and after the fight, has led to calls he should never feature on a Misfits card again.

However, Danis has insisted he was happy with his performance and offered a bizarre reason as to why his late-fight move failed. Asked during an interview with Piers Morgan why he tried a martial arts move, he said: “I wasn’t actually trying to but he was smart and he Vaselined his head up.

“So I guess he knew I was going for his neck but at that moment I actually wasn't. I was grabbing his head and he just kind of shrugged me and with the Vaseline and then he threw that punch and I up-kicked him.”

Pressed on why he dived in on Paul’s body and legs, Danis replied: “Oh yes, that one time, yeah, I was just messing around a little bit, letting him know what a real fight is.

“Boxing is not a real fight, it’s a half a fight. I want to fight him in a real fight, [he] shook my hand and said he was going to fight me in MMA... he shook my hand, if he’s a real man, he should.

“He didn’t defend his fiancée in my opinion. If a man talks about his fiancée the way I did about his fiancée, he should have knocked me out.”

Danis also accused Paul of “running” during the fight as he tried to defend his passive performance. He added: “The fight, it didn’t feel like a fight, it felt like he was running away, every time I tried to engage with him and get in there and trade, he tried to get away. He was running, he was on the back foot the whole time. I wanted to fight.”
