Out-of-work Wayne Rooney is pondering a switch to boxing for a one-off bout.

The Manchester United legend and boxing fanatic has held talks about competing on a Misfits show, which sees YouTube stars and influencers like KSI and Logan Paul compete for big purses. The 38-year-old was recently sacked as Birmingham City boss after just 15 games, putting a major dent in his hopes of forging a long career in management.

Rooney is now considering swapping football boots for boxing gloves. The former England ace is assessing his options as he waits to see if another managerial job presents itself after his stints with Birmingham, DC United and Derby County.

But a high-profile boxing match could be next up for Rooney, who was a member of an amateur club in Liverpool during his childhood. He once joined Manchester City fan Ricky Hatton for his ring walk ahead of the Hitman’s clash with Jose Luis Castillo in Las Vegas in 2007. He has been ringside for numerous other major fights.

Rooney has previously contacted Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn and jokingly asked him to set up a fight. He has also been in touch with KSI about facing him, the YouTube personality revealed in December 2022.

But turning to Misfits for a fight is now seen as a serious option for the retired footballer with talks having taken place in recent weeks. Misfits is not under the rules of the British Boxing Board of Control so Rooney wouldn’t be competing in professional boxing.

The events – which are broadcast on streaming channel DAZN on pay-per-view – have a mix of social media celebrities of various fame and infamy competing.

They have brought about controversy after some ugly scenes at press conferences and weigh-ins in the overhyped promotions while boxing experts have called for the events to be distanced from the actual sport.

Rooney has yet to agree to any terms and discussions are still at an early stage. Given his earning ability in football is still high, a significant sum would be needed to get Rooney to sign.
