Bruno Fernandes has penned a heartfelt tribute to Donny van de Beek as the Dutch flop waves goodbye to Manchester United.

Van de Beek, who moved to Old Trafford back in 2020 for a hefty £35million from Ajax, failed to hit the high notes during his stay at the Theatre of Dreams, clocking up a mere 62 appearances over an underwhelming four years. The Dutch international's departure is the first big move of the summer at United as they get ready to offload other stars with new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox at the helm.

After seasons of loan life at Everton and Eintracht Frankfurt, the 27-year-old midfielder is now set to strut his stuff at La Liga's Girona, with the switch said to be costing the Spanish side a starting point of £420,000 that could balloon to a £12.7m. Fernandes, who carved his spot at United shortly before Van de Beek's arrival, posted a touching farewell to his pal.

"You deserve the best," he shared, slapping a red heart emoji on there for good measure. Departing with a heavy heart, Van de Beek also hopped on Instagram to give his own thanks, showing appreciation for the love from the Manchester United legion despite not quite smashing it on the field.

He said: "Dear Manchester United family. Today is a memorable day as my adventure at the club comes to an end. I want to thank you all for your support throughout the years," reports the Express. "From the moment we arrived at Manchester United, we felt extremely welcome and we are grateful for that."

Van de Beek added: "Thank you to everyone at the club for making us feel at home. A special thanks to all the fans that made these years unforgettable. Besides the football, the birth of our two children here ensures that Manchester will always have a special place in our hearts. Good luck to everybody, we'll meet again."

Young hotshot Kobbie Mainoo alongside ex-team-mates Davvy Klaassen and Timothy Fosu-Mensah heaped on the love, sending emojis in reaction to Van de Beek's heartfelt post. Mainoo posted a single heart emoji, while Klaassen matched that gesture. Meanwhile Dutch star Fosu-Mensah, linked by his Ajax beginnings with Van de Beek, threw in a bunch of hearts.
