Jordan Pickford turned into England's saviour once more as the Three Lions roared into the Euro 2024 semi-finals with a nail-biting 5-3 penalty shootout triumph over Switzerland.

The Everton shot-stopper was on fire, blocking Manchester City ace Manuel Akanji's opening Swiss penalty and setting the stage for his squad to bang in all five of their penalties – propelling England to their second successive Euros semi-final.

Keepers are getting savvy these days, often seen with a cheat sheet of the rival team's penalty preferences on their water bottles if the match drags beyond extra time – and Pickford's no different.

Social media was buzzing when snaps of Pickford's bottle surfaced, showing the entire Swiss squad's names and their favoured shooting direction. A photo of the keeper's drink showed it read: "AKANJI, DIVE LEFT."

Pickford's clever use of his water bottle helped to outfox the City defender after he'd done his homework, proving that his smarts aren't just a recent development despite some rather bonkers tweets from his younger days.

Following his match-winning antics in Germany, the Express report some of Pickford's old tweets have made a comeback, leaving fans in stitches.

One fan shared a snap of Akanji looking bamboozled with maths equations floating around him hinting at his intense pre-penalty calculations. This contrasted with a picture of a focused Pickford and a selection of his past Twitter gems.

One cheeky tweet from the ex-Sunderland shot-stopper back in 2012 said: "Wish the parents would pay for me to have Sky in my room, Freeview is soul destroying at this time of night."

Another post from the same year declared: "On way to metro, mam has give me some money, wonder what to do."

Footy fans have been having a right giggle over Pickford's vintage tweets, with one admirer posting: "If you don't rate Pickford I have no idea what to tell you."

Pickford's bottle was a great help to him in the game

Another enthusiast, who brought back one of Pickford's legendary tweets following an old haircut, commented: "'Short, back and f****** stomping' - give Picks a knighthood."

Another tweet from 2012 that made a comeback said: "Round my gran's for dinner is the best #gammon #chips #pineapple." A fan reminisced quoting the tweet: "Old Pickford tweets are great!"

Since his days of comedic gold on Twitter, Pickford has turned into England's saviour on numerous occasions with his savvy penalty saves, like during the 2018 World Cup face-off with Colombia, and he nearly helped the Three Lions clinch the trophy at Wembley in the Euro 2020 final.

Pickford and his England team-mates will now take on the Netherlands in the semi-finals of Euro 2024 on Wednesday at 8pm UK time.
