A Bargain Hunt expert was left cackling with laughter at the state of an item brought to auction by the blue team as he thought it 'came from a skip'.

In the episode, which aired on BBC1 today (March 12), auctioneer James Lewis couldn't contain his horror at the state of an item brought to him by the blue team, Richard and Mattie. The father and son duo were tasked with finding three items to take to auction on a budget of £300, aided by expert David Harper.

They decided to "roll the dice" on a set for five theatre seats as their big spend, which were in less than perfect condition, to say the least. But Harper had said they'd be "very surprised how excited people get" over old theatre seats at auction - meaning they could have had the potential to make a profit.

Bargain Hunt auctioneer James Lewis joked the £75 chairs looked like they 'came from a skip'

However, James Lewis went red in the face with laughter when he saw the set, which set the team back £75. Presenter Charlie Ross asked him why the set of five chairs had been catalogued as four.

To which, Lewis quipped: "I think it's four and a half," in reference to the dilapidated state of the furnishings. He continued: "I thought you went to the Newark Antiques Fair for those?

"Are you sure, whoever it was, was it David Harper? He didn't stop at the local skip on the way home, did he? Where on Earth did he find those?"

Ross laughed and said: "Dear old David does dig up some interesting things and I have seen those sorts of seats make money but I don't think these..."

Lewis agreed that "early cinema seats can be good" but it takes a lot of investment in refurbishing them to make them worthwhile. In their present condition, he estimated they would sell at a loss, for £30 to £40.

The expert wasn't the only one who was left baffled by the purchase. Viewers took to X (Twitter) declaring that the chairs would never make a profit due to the state of their condition.

One user said: "Who in their right mind would buy those chairs?," while another added: "Those chairs should be burned." A third commented: "Those chairs are never going to make a profit."

Meanwhile, a fourth supported the decision, writing: "The cinema seats are a good upcycling project." But sadly, the negative comments were all correct as they only sold for £55.
